Lesson Plan Recommended Materials Printed downloadable activity pages* Drawing paper and card stock Glue, kid-safe scissors, and staplers Crayons, Magic Markers, colored pencils, and washable paint in squeeze bottles Paper plates or cardboard Drinking straws I love this book! I read it to all of my classes (Pre-K 8th) at the beginning of the year. They ALL loved it and I now constantly hear them quoting it and telling one another it s allright, make it into a beautiful oops. Lesson Plan Getting Started Activities Set out art supplies and distribute copies of the downloadable activity pages.* Demonstrate how tearing paper can make all kinds of shapes. Let each child crumple a piece of paper, glue it to another flat piece of paper, and create something fun. Is it the body of an animal? A snowman? The center of a flower? Glue and Paint Ooze Have the kids squeeze white glue onto a piece of cardboard or a paper plate in any random pattern. Next, instruct them to stick tissue paper pieces to the glue. (Tissue paper over glue can be layered for neat color combinations.) After the glue dries, make the suggestion of adding a face, arms, and legs to their design to create an animal or person. Squeeze a bit of paint onto a paper plate or cardboard. With a straw, blow on the paint to splatter around the paper. When the paint is dry, each child can create a picture from the shape. *Downloadable materials, author classroom video, and the Beautiful Oops! song are available at workman.com/blog/beautifuloopseventkit Pass the Drawing Have each child make a mistake on purpose (a smear, a dot, a scribble) on a piece of paper. After one minute, have everyone pass his or her drawing to the left. The next person adds onto the drawing to turn it into something amazing. (Themes may be suggested at first, like Pass the Lion, or Pass the Truck, or Pass the Monster, etc.) To order Beautiful Oops! contact Michael Rockliff, (212) 614-7521, mrockliff@workman.com or your wholesaler of choice. workman.com

And every parent will want that child to know that glasses are cool and fun and enable us to do the things we want to do. Take Arlo: He s a shaggy, free-spirited dog who loves to play catch, until one day he can t. He can t see the ball anymore. He needs glasses! To start drawing the adorable Arlo, lightly draw a big letter U in the middle of the paper. It helps to draw larger than the child s hand. Draw two curved lines that extend to the bottom corners of the paper for the shoulders. Go back up to the top of the head and draw two big ears. Curve line upward to touch the face. Color in a big, wet nose and two eyes. To make the fur, use short strokes at a diagonal all the way around the face, ears, and shoulders. When the kids are ready to color in Arlo, place crayons, markers, colored pencils, or chalk pastels in a cup in the middle of each table. Kids can also get creative with the background. Creating Arlo s Glasses Help kids cut out the Arlo glasses in this packet and get ready to decorate. Helpful hint for a larger group: Pre-cut ten pairs of glasses and cut each pair in half. This will yield you twenty halves. Now kids can pick a colored piece of paper, fold it in half, and trace the glasses with the middle of the glasses touching the center fold. Once the glasses are traced, cut the paper to reveal symmetrical glasses. Lesson developed by Patty Palmer, deepspacesparkle.com
Arlo Can See! Kids can now glue the glasses they ve decorated onto the Arlo picture they created. Finally, Arlo can run and play catch, and kids have an exciting new project to show off! Lesson developed by Patty Palmer, deepspacesparkle.com
