IRONWORKS Shelters Reminiscent of Riveted Iron and Steel Structures 1455 Lincoln Avenue Holland, Michigan 49423 (800) 748-0985 www.iconshelters.com
IRONWORKS These shelters and other products are designed and fabricated to resemble the early iron and steel bridges that crossed America s rivers, streams and gulleys in the early part of the 20th century. They are chatracterized by large, straight I beams, brackets and braces connected by hundreds of round headed rivets. The large laminated wood beams fit well with the Ibeams, and the wood roof decks reflect the wood decks of the old road way bridges. They are also a throwback to the superstructures of monuments like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, built in the 1920s and 1930s. This raw, industrial form of construction is enjoying a rennaisance of sorts due in large part by projects such as the High Line, an abandoned elevated rail structure turned public park in New York City. These structures fit well in recreation areas where this type of construction is present in existing bridges and buildings. Wood beams and roof deck used to compliment the industrial steel look, offers you the strength of steel with the warmth of wood.
THE ELOVUTION OF AN IDEA For almost thirty years, steel framed picnic shelters have been made of tubular steel, with fasteners hidden within the tubing. The personnel at ICON were part of a group that actually wrote the spec that eliminated the use of I-beams and open channel. However, we ve come to the realization that hidden fasteners are overrated; we like seeing the connections! As more and more older infrastructure was restored and reused, the industrial look gained in popularity. And we figured why not? In early 2014, we began looking at designs of furniture made from old machinery parts and wood slabs. We looked at commercial and residential buildings with exposed I-beams and heavy wood beams. And we got an idea for a new look in shelters and site furnishings. The IRONWORKS line of products consistes of large gable shelters in one and two story configurations, smaller, two-column shelters for use in public transit or individual picnic shelters, and a line of site furnishings designed to compliment the shelters. The photos on this page are from three separate trade shows where ICON exhibited the IRONWORKS line of shelters and furnishings.
