Not Fake News Bentley is no longer developing GeoPak SS2 No more criteria Current products are centered around templates (visual criteria) and 3D corridor modeling OpenRoads is Bentley s new line of products embraced by DOT s around the country The industry is moving towards 3D data rich models. TxDOT will shift towards a 3D model centric deliverable in the coming years Contract language, policies, and procedures will be further refined and developed to allow for this FHWA is encouraging this through their EDC (Every Day Counts) program 15

Why are we doing this? Start at conveying the design intent in a more digestible format Build the relationships to build confidence in the design What exactly are we trying to model? 17
Why are we doing this? Cost of change raises the farther down the production line. We can create design rules so that if we were to change one part of the design, we can see it s effects throughout the rest of the design. We re building relationships within the software to help us do our job and automate some changes 18

How does this help me with Alternative Technical Concepts (ATC)? ATC s what can we add to the process to help better evaluate and approve ATC s? ATC workshops/model Reviews Shows more detail. More detail shows the impacts to other disciplines. Shows consideration to other disciplines and builds confidence. Can be used to assess and lower risk. Doesn t take the place of design experience, but it better communicates design experience instead of the Trust me. It works tactic. Now we can trust, but we can verify 31
How does this help me with Alternative Technical Concepts (ATC)? Over The Shoulder reviews help build real time confidence Develop models with parametric switches and constraints to show quick/live changes The ability to prepare what-if scenarios to flip back and forth between options or have additional developed models to fly through. Show that it s much more intuitive than, show me the sections and give me time to walk through them, though we can still do this. 32

What does it take to get here? Training Easier than criteria We can train a 3 month EIT the basics of corridor modeling to produce better cross sections than an intermediate criteria writer with years of experience. Contractors are using this in conjunction with rovers and survey control networks in the field 35
What does it take to get here? Use of SS3 has been improved in SS4 for i- models and export to Trimble Business I-models (more advanced detail in XML) have more information than XSR s. Legislature Methods to sign and seal the model. This will lead to more detailed models as opposed to models just good enough to get cross sections every 50 or 100. 36
How does this help me with Alternative Technical Concepts (ATC)? Potential Workflow Centered around the 3D Model Provide 3D Model Over The Shoulder Review Proceed towards Final Design Feed AMG & Provide Construction Information Create 4D Scheduling for Analysis and Optimization Create 5D Cost Analysis and Optimization Develop Asset Management and O&M 37
Moving 3D Design Forward Construction with the plans as FIO (For information only) Requires support: change in legislation, policy & standards development DOT s with plans moving forward (Utah, Florida, Oregon, etc.) 4D = Design Model broken into Construction Phases + Schedule 5D = Design Model broken into Construction Phases + Schedule + Cost per Phase Comprehensive QA/QC Asset Management Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality for communication (Potential uses) 38

Summary What can 3D Design in OpenRoads do for us as the client, designer, and contractor? Reduce risk by finding potential issues earlier Reduce time for alternative analysis exploration Run quicker gut check quantities Increase confidence in the design Convey design intent faster 3D model shows the considerations to other design elements (road to road, bridge column to utility to drainage, etc.) Can promote a closer relationship between the client, designer, and contractor at various stages for a successful project 44
