Italian Post (Poste Italiane) will issue an exclusive philatelic anniversary postmark dedicated to the event. THE AIM OF THE PRIZE Santi di Diso Engraving Prize aims to recognize and honour the value of engraving in its various original technical expressions. The first edition will be dedicated to bread associated with the sacred and pagan repertoire of the liturgical feast of Saint Joseph. Traditionally in March, Salento families would set exceptional tables in their homes according to well-defined rules, exhibiting abundant dishes trussed up with scented flowers and bread: large and beautiful bread rolls gilded, blessed and finely decorated with early Christian, conciliatory and fertility symbols. All visitors were welcome to take the holy bread, however, only the poor families could attend the banquet. The sense of this ritual was to place the sacred value of sharing. All guests enjoyed being together at Saint Joseph s Table.
With the same generous spirit, the Saints of Diso offer artists from all around the world bread paper sheets handmade from wheat straw and cotton based on the 14th century technique. The paper on which the artists will print their work is perfect for any engraving technique. The subject of the print is free. The work, printed on the bread paper sheet, will then be sent to the organize for further selection, exhibition and prize assignment.
