43" x 43" It's fun to take old fashion traditional quilt blocks and turn them into a modern festive center piece. Fabric Requirements: 2 yards of blue fabric for the background and binding 1 1/8 yards white fabric for blocks and snowflakes 3 yards backing fabric 48" x 48" piece of batting 1/4 yard Steam a Seam 2 1/2 yard Tear Away Appliqué Stabilizer This is a beginner pattern. Basic sewing skills are assumed. Jo's Country Junction cannot guarantee individual results. Please read through all the instructions before beginning. Cut out 84 blue 2 1/2" squares. Cut 64 sets of white and blue triangles with a Go or with your Easy Angle Ruler..or use the tip below. You can make the triangles by cutting squares 64 of them ~ 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" drawing the diagonal and sewing a 1/4" on either side of the line. Sew the triangles together. Press to the blue. Assemble triangles and squares sewing the blocks together as shown. You will need 16 blocks. You should have four blue squares left over. Cut 3 strips of white that are 2 1/2" wide. Sub cut the remaining white strips into 16-6 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces. Attach a 6 1/2" white piece between two blocks as shown. Press seams toward the blocks. Make eight sets. Sew the remaining blue 2 1/2" squares to remaining white 6 1/2" pieces to create sashing. You should have four sets like this. Press the seams in toward the blue. Assemble the blocks as shown. To make the center block: Cut one blue 4 1/2" square. Cut 2 ~ 4 7/8" squares cut on the diagonal so you have 4 white triangles.

Sew two of the white triangles to the sides of the square. Press to the white. Sew the remaining two triangles to the other sides of the square. Press the seams to the white. TRIM THE SQUARE TO A 6 1/2" SQUARE! Cut two 4 1/2" strips. Sub cut the 4 1/2" strips into 2-6 1/2" x 4 1/2" pieces and 2-14 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces. Sew the 6 1/2" strips to the sides of the recently trimmed 6 1/2" square. Press the seams to the blue. Sew the 14 1/2" strips to the sides. Press the seams to the blue. With a rotary cutter, cut two blue squares that are 14 7/8" x 14 7/8". Cut them in half once on the diagonal creating 4 large triangles. Sew two large triangles to the block as shown. Make two sets. Press to the blue. Sew two patchwork blocks to the center block as shown. Press to the center block.

Sew strips together to create the center piece. If you don't have a Go! Cutter, follow the Steam a Seam2 instructions then cut out triangles, squares and circles to create a snowflake. Here's link to give you an idea on how to create them. http://www.makinglearningfun.com/themepages/snowflakevisualdiscriminationactivity.htm For the snow flakes cut two pieces of Steam a Seam 2 and of white fabric that are 6" x 45". Peel the paper backing from the Steam a Seam 2. Press it onto the backs of the white fabric. Place the fabric with the backing attached onto the Sleigh & Snowflakes die accordion folding to make two layers and run it through the AccuQuilt GO! cutter. I also used the Holiday Medley die to cut some of the snowflakes. Cut a total of thirteen snow flakes. Take the center piece and the snowflakes to the ironing board. Pull the paper backing off the pieces and put in place as you like. The Steam a Seam allows you to lift and move the pieces until you find a position for the snowflakes that you like. Once the pieces are where you want, press them with your iron. Now the pieces will not move. Place a piece of Tear Away Appliqué Stabilizer on the back side of the center piece behind the snowflakes. You may want to use a spray adhesive product such as basting spray to hold the Tear Away in place. Using a decorative stitch such as a button hole stitch or zigzag stitch along with thread the color of your choice, machine appliqué the pieces in place. Remove the excess Tear Away. Cut a piece of batting 48" x 48". Cut the backing fabric in half. Sew the two pieces together. Lay the backing wrong side up. Place a batting piece on top of that. Then place the center piece right side up on top of the batting. Adhere the pieces together with basting spray. Machine quilt as desired. Trim the batting and backing off even with the edges of the center piece.

This center piece would make a great Christmas tree skirt. For the tree skirt, trace a 6" circle in the center of the quilt. Draw a line from the edge of the quilt up to the center circle. Cut on the lines. You would need to cut extra binding strips for a tree skirt. To bind the quilt cut 4 ~ 2 1/2" blue strips. Piece together. Bind your quilt. I am an old fashion girl...i love paging through old quilt magazines from the 80's and 90's. Those quilts typically feature quilts with traditional blocks. I saw a quilt using this block and thought if I changed the colors to white and blue, it might look like a snowflake. I tested out four blocks and soon I had the design you see in this pattern. I am tempted to make a full size quilt using the same blocks...maybe that will be another pattern. Feel free to stop over at my blog, www.joscountryjunction.com. I love to have visitors and meet new friends...and of course, you'll want to see the latest projects I am working on. You can keep up to date by joining us on Facebook. Please be respectful to the design process. Don't make multiple copies of this pattern and hand them out to friends.
