S-2 Antiques and The Arts Weekly June 2, 2017 Master Of The Maritime James E. Buttersworth Exhibit COTUIT, MASS. The Cahoon Museum of American Art will present Master of the Maritime: James E. Buttersworth, which will be on view June 28 August 20. This exhibition celebrates the talent and subject matter of marine painter James Edward Buttersworth (1817 1894), as well as his importance to American maritime history and art. One of the foremost American ship portraitists of the Nineteenth Century, Buttersworth s paintings are known for their meticulous detail, dramatic settings and grace in movement. Master of the Maritime features significant paintings by Buttersworth from the museum s collection, from multiple private collections and an important group of Buttersworth masterpieces from the Mystic Seaport Museum. Also included are paintings by his father, maritime artist Thomas Buttersworth. The artworks in the exhibition feature famous yachts in action, scenes from America s Cup races, clippers, steamers, other marine craft and scenes at sea with dramatic atmospheric conditions. This is the first time a major group of Buttersworth s paintings has been shown together on Cape Cod, and the museum is offering this exhibition to regional audiences who are enthusiastic about the genre of marine painting. The Cahoon Museum of American Art is at 4676 Falmouth Road. For information, www.cahoonmuseum.org or 508-428-7581. Yacht Race Off Sandy Hook, James E.
