Secion 5 SECTION 5 TOLERANCES 5-1

INTRODUCTION Secion 5 Srongwell uilizes ASTM D3917, Dimensional Tolerance of Thermoseing Glass-Reinforced Plasic Pulruded Shapes, for a definiion of he dimensions o e oleranced for EXTREN. Confusion can easily exis when he erms eing discussed are only loosely defined. For example, ASTM D3917 makes a clear disincion eween sraighness, camer and flaness. Srongwell will work wih he cusomer o define he paricular dimensional requiremens. Anoher excellen source for erms uilized in he pulrusion indusry is ASTM D3918, Sandard Definiion of Terms Relaing o Reinforced Plasic Pulruded Producs. Srongwell was exremely acive in formulaing oh of hese ASTM specificaions and mainains a coninued acive working relaionship on ASTM Commiees. For reference, classifying EXTREN per ASTM D3647, Classifying Reinforced Plasic Pulruded Shapes According o Composiion, yields he following: EXTREN Series 500/525 = GCPF EXTREN Series 625 = GCVF INSPECTION Srongwell verifies he adherence o dimensional olerances and visual sandards for he iniial par from all EXTREN producion runs. A Srongwell, his iniial sample is known as he Firs Aricle. The Modulus of Elasiciy is also verified y a simple eam deflecion es which is performed on he producion floor. Srongwell s producion operaors are an inegral par of he Srongwell Qualiy Assurance program. The operaors have een rained o inspec he produc as i is produced wih he qualiy assurance inspecors funcioning as audiors and rainers. TOLERANCES The olerances presened govern EXTREN srucural shapes and may no e arirarily applied o oher pulruded profiles. Srongwell mainains an exremely acive cusom pulrusion usiness and hese profiles place differen demands on he composie design and dimensional olerance. For example, EXTREN srucural shapes are alanced composies while cusom composies, ecause of heir special applicaion, are no necessarily geomerically alanced. In he olerance secion, some mahemaical symols will e used. These symols are defined elow: > "greaer han" wih he ip of he arrow poining o he smaller numer. For example, if i is saed ha " > 2", his means ha dimension "" is greaer han "2". Conversely, " < 2" saes ha dimension "" is less han 2". TOLERANCES "greaer han or equal o" wih he ip of he arrow sill poining owards he smaller numer. However, " 2" now is inerpreed as "" is greaer han or equal o "2". NOTE: Sandard olerances will e assumed as he arge specificaions for cusom shapes in he asence of any cusomer supplied specificaions. Srongwell sraighness olerances are ased on sraighness as defined in his secion. Camer is a special cusom requiremen (also defined in his secion for plae). 5-2

An angle wih a flange hickness of.090" would have a olerance of.090" -.010" ha is, a minimum olerance of.080". Regardless of he flange widh, a olerance of no greaer han ±.094" is permied. This maximum olerance is o e used when 4% of "" or " f exceeds 3/32. 5-3
