A Step-by-step Guide to Installing and Configuring your Vonets VAP11G Wifi Bridge (c) 2011 Zarar Iqbal D0033 21/6/2011

About this guide T he main aim of this guide is to guide you through putting your wireless network ID onto your wifi bridge. The configuration program which comes on the disk included with your wifi bridge takes you through three simple steps, after which your wifi bridge is ready to go. To configure your wifi bridge, you first plug it into a PC and run the included CD from the PC. After this, you can then plug your wifi bridge into any internet capable device and that device will be able to connect quite happily to the wireless network of your choice! This guide has been written to make easier the process of configuring you wifi bridge for the first time. We have tried to write it as simply and thoroughly as possible so that it is easy for most customers to understand. It is a response to our customers who have raised questions regarding the wifi bridge and how to configure and use. We hope it provides you with useful support. If you have any suggestions for improvements, or it does not answer all of your questions, please don t hesitate to let us know. As the customer, you come first! Don t worry you can contact us directly or by message and we ll take you step -by-step through the process of setting up your wifi bridge. Hopefully, this guide should help you sufficiently, but if not, you can find our contact details at the back of this guide.

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO INSTALLING - & - CONFIGURING YOUR WIFI BRIDGE

What the bridge does The wifi bridge takes signals from your wired device, e.g. Satellite box, game console, and turns them into wireless signals your wireless router understands. NO NEED FOR METRES OF CABLES It acts as a bridge between your chosen device and your wireless network. The device connected to the wifi bridge thinks it is talking to a wired connection. The wifi bridge turns your chosen device into a wireless device.

Range of transmission The wifi bridge works up to a range of 30 metres, and its signal strength is the same as any other wireless device you might use, such as a laptop computer, which may vary according to physical conditions, such as metal structures, walls the atmosphere, and time of day. The wifi bridge saves you the time, expense and disturbance of installing lengthy cables throughout your house. It also gives you with the flexibility of being able to move devices throughout your house easily, like any other wireless -enabled devices, whether they are printers, gaming consoles, satellite receivers or desktop PC s, etc.

The power adapter socket At the end of the wifi bridge are two wires. At the side of the base of the wires is a small hole. This is the power adapter socket. This socket takes a power adapter connector and can be used to power the wifi bridge if the device to which it is connected doesn t have enough power. The power socket is also used with devices that are already powered by a 12 volt power adapter.

The USB connector The USB connector on the wifi bridge provides the wifi bridge with electricity. The wifi bridge does not use the USB connector to send data. The wifi bridge s USB connector fits onto the end of a power connector. You can pull off the USB connector to reveal the power connector. If then your plug your target device already uses a power adapter, to power both your device and the wifi bridge, plug device s power connector into the wifi bridge and the wifi bridge s power connector into your device.

The yellow/orange light This lights up when the wifi bridge is receiving power. If the wifi bridge has nor been configured, the light will be solid, i.e. not flashing. If the wifi bridge has been paired successfully with your PC, the light will flash on and off. We will come onto this more later in the guide. The blue light This light comes on shortly after you have successfully configured your wifi bridge with a network. It flashes when the wifi bridge it is transmitting data to a network.

Installation requirements The installation software will work on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. These instructions were designed using a PC running Windows 7 You will need: Access to a PC running Windows 7 with 1. an RJ45 (internet) socket 2. a USB port supplying 12V current* 3. An active internet connection 4. A wireless router with an active internet connection (which can be secured or unsecured) You ll also need: 5. A Vonets 11g wifi bridge 6. A Vonets installation disk 7. The target device that you want to make wireless, e.g. game console, satellite receiver. The device must have: A. A USB port with 12V supply* B. An RJ45 (internet) socket * If y o u do n t h av e a U SB p o r t w i t h 1 2 V p o w e r, y o u l l n e e d t o b u y a p o w e r ada p t e r t o s u p p ly p o w e r t o t h e w i f i b r i dg e. Check for ports and power Your PC and target device must have the correct ports, sockets and electricity supply. In some cases, devices don t have what is needed to make your wifi bridge work. To make sure all devices have what is needed, you are now going to perform some simple checks. This will also show whether or not your wifi bridge is powering up. First, you need to check the USB port on your PC. To do this: Plug your wifi bridge s USB connector into the USB port on your PC Plug your wifi bridge s RJ45 connector into your PC s RJ45 socket Wait a few seconds. > If a yellow/orange light flashes inside the wifi bridge, it means that your USB post supplies enough power to the wifi bridge. > If a yellow/orange light does not flash inside the wifi bridge, you will either need to use a different port (on a different PC if necessary) and failing this, you will need to use a 12 volt external power adapter to power the device. Next, repeat this power-checking process by plugging your USB connector into the target device.

Installing the disk software What s on the disk supplied with the wifi bridge The software on the mini CD disk comes in four parts: the autorun menu, a user manual which is in PDF format and which you can view and print out, a program installer for the configuration utility and a program installer for the drivers required to allow the wifi bridge to communicate with your PC.

First use of the disk The installation menu Put the CD into the PC s CD player. A menu should appear (see picture below) on your screen shortly after the disk has been inserted. > If a menu does not appear, access the files on the disk (see below) from the Computer icon on your desktop and click on the application called, autorun (see below). After clicking on this application s icon, a menu should appear on your screen.

The installation onscreen menu There are two menu options at the top of the menu. Each option is for a different version of Windows. > To check which version of Windows you are using, right click on the My Computer / Computer icon on your desktop. Select Properties from the context menu that appears. A box containing system information will appear. Among this information should be the name of the version of Windows you are using, i.e., Windows XP, Windows Vista or in this case, Windows 7.

Installing the software This process is relatively straight -forward, so to save time, no pictures are shown: the process involves a series of clicks on Next buttons and so forth. Don t worry because you don t see any friendly pictures here: again - the process is very straight -foward. The installer program box Once you have selected an option from the onscreen menu, the installer program brings up a box which reads, Welcome to the VAP11G configure 5.0.17.0 for WIN7/VISTA/WINXP Setup. Click Next> Accepting the licence agreement Accept the licence agreement to proceed with the installation. Click Next> Selecting the installation directory Select the appropriate directory in which to install the software. Naming the Start Menu program folder name The software will ask you for a name for the folder that will appear in the Start menu Programs folder. By default this is set to VONETS VAP11G. You can leave this as it is or change it. When you re done, click Next> Confirmation of the settings The program will now say it is ready to install and show you a list of all the settings you have agreed to so far. Read the details on the list. If you are happy with these, click Next. Installation of the configuration program The installer program will now install the configuration program to the folder you have specified. This should take about five seconds. Completion of the installation of the configuration program and installation of Wincap Once installation is complete, a box will appear telling you that the installation process was successful. IMPORTANT: Before you click Finish, pay attention to the lower left -hand corner of the box. There is a check box with the words, Install Wincap. Wincap is required for the VAP11G configure software to run properly! Make sure this box is ticked and Click Finish.

Phew! Well done! You ve almost completed the installation of the configuration software! Just a little further to go!

Installing WinCap Your PC also needs a program called WinCap to configure the wifi bridge, so we are now going to install this. The WinCap program details box When the WinCap installer program runs, a box appears with the details of the WinCap program, such as the version and software producers. Click Next > Welcome message Next, a welcome message appears, telling you that the installer is going to install the WinCap program on your PC. Click Next > Agreement box Next, an agreement box appears. To proceed, you must click on I Agree. System information box Next, a box containing system information appears. Click Install.

Software installation The installer software then installs the WinCap configuration software. This takes about ten seconds. After installation of the configuration software After installation, a confirmation message appears to confirm that the WinCap software has been installed onto your PC. Click Finish. Installation takes about 10 seconds You can now remove the disk. You are ready to use the configuration program to configure your wifi bridge using your PC so it will work with your target device and your wireless network.

Now you ve installed the configuration software, you must use that software and your PC to put your wireless network ID onto your wifi bridge. That s what we re going to do next!

Configuring the wifi bridge Connect the wifi bridge to your PC Make sure that you have followed the instructions so far and that your wifi bridge is connected to your PC and that your wifi bridge is receiving power. Run the configuration program Locate the VONETS VAP11G folder in the Start Menu (if you chose a different folder name, then locate this folder in the start menu). Configuration happens in three short steps. Configuration - Step 1 The program looks for the wifi bridge The program will run and a box will appear on the screen. > A message appears saying that the program is looking for the wifi bridge. > When the program has finished looking for the

wifi bridge, it will display a list of the wifi bridges it has found. > This information is displayed in two columns. One column is for the name of the wifi bridge and the second column is for the MAC address (unique ID number) of the wifi bridge. > There should be one entry in the box, which is the entry for your wifi bridge. PROBLEM: If there is no entry, follow the advice found in FAQ s, question 7. Once the configuration program has found your wifi bridge, use your mouse to move your cursor up to the entry for your wifi bridge and then click the Next button. Configuration - Step 2 The wifi bridge can only work if it is connected to a wireless network. It can see all the networks in range, but it can only connect to one network at a time. At stage 2 of configura tio n, the w if i b r idge looks for all the wireless networks in range, so that you can select one network to which you can pair the wifi bridge to. You then select the network you want to wirelessly connect to.

> Once the wifi bridge has found all the networks in range, these will be listed in the two columns displayed. > Use your mouse to move the cursor to the network you want to select and click on that network. Click the Next button. > If your network does not appear, click on the refresh button. > If after refreshing, your network does not appear in the list, check your wireless router to make sure it is switched on. > If you have done all this and still, there is no entry for your network, then follow the advice given for question 7 in FAQs. Secure networks Some networks require what is called a WEP key. This is another code which your wireless router uses to stop unauthorised people gaining access to your wireless network. All devices, e.g., PC, printer, wifi bridge, which connect to your secure wireless network using a wireless connection, i.e., not a wired connection, must know the WEP key (security code) of that secured wireless router in order to connect to it.

Going back to step 2 of configuration, there is a column in the configuration table titled, Security. If a detected wireless network has no security code associated with it, the word, None, appears in this column. If a network is secure, the word, WEP appears in this column. Selecting a network For both secure and non -secure networks, to proceed to step 3 of the configuration, you must select a network from the list to which you want to connect. > So now, move your cursor with your mouse up to the network you want to connect to and click on it. Then click Next at the bottom of the window. Entering the WEP key If you selected a non -secure network, the configuration program will proceed to step three of the configuration process, and we will come onto that in a moment.

If the network you have selected is secure, you will be presented with a box in which to insert your WEP key*. If you have the WEP key for the wireless network which you selected at step 2, enter the WEP key in the Key 1 box and click Next, below. Step 3 - Confirmation of settings This is the simplest part of configuration. At this step, a box appears which shows the old settings on the wifi bridge** (in the left-hand box) and the new settings which you have just entered at steps 1 and 2 (in the right hand box). > If you agree with the changes, click Next. *Y o u r WE P k e y i s a co de. At this point, the configuration program brings up a message congratulating you on configuring your wifi bridge:

Connecting your wifi bridge to a power source Once you have configured the device, i.e. You have put your wireless network s information onto the wifi bridge, you are ready to connect the wifi bridge to your chosen device, e.g., game console, satellite receiver, printer, etc. Step 1: Powering the wifi bridge Plug the usb connector of the wifi bridge into the USB port of the chosen device. > If your chosen device does not have a USB port, pull off the USB connector and insert the power connector underneath into the power socket of your chosen device. > If your chosen device has neither a USB port nor a power socket, you will need to use an external 12v power supply* and insert its power connector into the hole (power socket) at the base of the wifi bridge. * E x t e r n a l p o w e r s u p p l i e s ar e ch e ap an d can b e p u r ch a s e d f r o m m o s t e le c t r i c a l s u p p li e r s, s u c h as t h o s e o n e B ay an d o n t h e h i g h s t r e e t, s u ch as A r g o s

Step 2: Making data connection the Insert the RJ45 connector of the wifi bridge into the RJ45 socket of your chosen device. Step 3: Switch on your chosen device. Step 4: After several seconds, the wifi bridge lights will start flashing. This means that your wifi bridge is receiving and transmitting information and is working properly. Step 5: Wait about 30 seconds for communications between your wifi bridge and your wireless network to be normalised. Step 6: Congratulations! You have now made your chosen device wireless!

FAQ s Here are some customers questions regarding the wifi bridge. Note that we test each bridge before we send it out to make sure that it works. 1. Will the wifi bridge work with my...? > If your device has an RJ45 connection socket, which it uses to connect to the internet, then YES wifi bridge will work with it. You may need a separate 12 volt power supply to power your wifi bridge if your chosen device needs more or less voltage than this, but ultimately, the wifi bridge will work with an RJ45 -capable device. > If your chosen device does not have an RJ45 con- nection socket, then NO, the wifi bridge will not work with your chosen device. 2. If I purchase this, will I receive my Sky Anytime Plus service from Sky once I subscribe? > We have no contract with Sky to supply their services. This device takes signals supplied by any device that can connect to the internet and sends the signals it receives from the device to which it is attached as a wireless internet signal which can be picked up by a wireless internet network receiver. 3. I would like to connect my i -can HD set top box to my wireless internet using its ethernet port. Your picture appears to show two plugs. One would go into i-can's ethernet socket. What is the other for, please?

> The other connector is a USB connector which de- rives power from the device to which the wifi bridge is connected. Underneath the USB connector is a regular power adapter connector, in case you do not have a USB port on your device. 4. What is the length of the wires? > Each wire is 30cm in length, therefore the com- bined reach of both wires is 60cm or 0.6m (just over half a metre or 2 ft) 5. When I run the configuration program, and try to configure the wifi bridge I get a message saying, NIC not found. > Disable your wireless connection on your PC and then re-run the wifi bridge configuration software. Make sure your wired connection is activated. You should not receive the message this time and the configuration software should be able to configure the wifi bridge to your wireless network with no issues. 6. Why does the NIC not found message appear? > The wifi bridge emits wireless signals, so you must make sure that any device to which it is attached has its wireless capability turned OFF (this mainly concerns PCs which can have both wired and wireless connections at the same time) and its wired internet connection turned ON. Failing to do this will prevent the wifi bridge from being installed or working properly and you will receive this error

message. 7. The yellow light comes on, but the configuration programme cannot detect the wifi bridge. > Sometimes Windows needs a refresh of connections that are already active. When this happens, deactivate your wired connection and then reactivate it. After you have done this. Remove the wifi bridge from your PC and reconnect it. Try step one of the configuration program again and hopefully this time, the program should be able to detect the wifi bridge. 8. My wifi bridge does not light up when I plug it into the USB port. I don t think the USB port has any power coming out of it. > In this case, you will need to purchase a separate 12v power supply. These are cheap enough and you can get them on ebay and at most electrical retailers, such as Argos. To power the wifi bridge using a power adaptor, fit the power adapter s power connector into the hole (power socket) next to the base of the wires on the wifi bridge. This will power the USB. > If your chosen device already has a power adapter, you can insert the power adapter socket into the wifi bridge, pull off the wifi bridge s USB connector and insert the wifi bridge power connector concealed underneath the USB connector into your chosen device s power socket.
