Dori Garden Quilt Created by Linda Wenturine Nothing is as pretty as a summer garden in full bloom. This summer inspired wall hanging features embroidery designs from the BERNINA Exclusive Collection - Dori #82004 along with the coordinating Benartex fabrics. Three-dimensional flowers are the showcase of the quilt as well as complementary quilting embroidery designs and a flattering mixed bouquet of designs. On the final step, watch your flowers appear to come alive when you complete the tufting technique. The colors of this quilt will keep you smiling long after the summer flowers are gone for the season. Flowers in Bloom! Embroidery 3-D Freestanding Appliqué Flowers Refer to the.pdf directions included with the design collection for the Freestanding Appliqué 3-D flower. Use the same color thread in the bobbin as used in the needle for the 3-D flowers as the wrong side is visible. Print the appliqué patterns from the.pdf file for design #82004-35,36 and 37. Rough cut each paper pattern. Lightly spray the back of the paper pattern with 505 Spray. 1 Affix the paper template to the RIGHT side of the appliqué fabric and secure with a pin. Cut along the flower piece along the black lines. Remove paper. Lightly spray the wrong side of the cut flower with 505. Hoop 2 layers of AquaMesh stabilizer in the large oval hoop. You can stitch multiple parts of the 3-D flower in the same hooping (photo 1) Stitch the placement line. Remove hoop from the machine keeping the AquaMesh in the hoop. Affix the cut flower within the placement lines. Complete the embroidery. Stitch only the top 3 petal layers. The center of the flower, which is design # 82004-38, is stitched when attaching the flower to the quilt later 2 Trim away excess stabilizer and rinse in warm water. Dry completely. Set aside flower petals until later. Embroidered Bouquet Spray Ultra Clean and Tear stabilizer and affix to the wrong side of the 14 x 11 white fabric. Hoop all layers. (photo 2) Stitch design #82004-15. 3 Trim fabric to 7½ x 7½ square. making sure the design is centered. (photo 3) Repeat this for each of the remaining two 14 x 11 white fabric rectangles. You will now have 3-7½ embroidered blocks. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 3 of 8

Piecing the 4 Patch Each square is built around a white center square. Add the left and right side strips first, then the top and bottom. Begin with (6) 5½ x 5½ white squares. Referring to the fabric labels on page 2, add 2 strip C to the right and left sides of the squares using Patchwork Foot #37 and sewing ¼ seam. (photo 4) Sew each strip making adding one square at a time in a clothesline manner. Make sure you have enough fabric as you near the end of a strip. Start a new strip if needed. There has been ample yardage configured to allow for this. (photo 5) 4 Trim the sewn strip even with the top and bottom of the center square as shown. (photo 6 right) For the remaining (6) 5½ x 5½ white squares, add 2 strip D to the sides in the same manner. (photo 6-left) 5 Add the top and bottom 2 strips using the same clothesline method match the fabric strips according to the photo 7 ( G is used on the left square, B is used on the right square). Trim the sewn strip to form the square. (photo 7) 6 The squares measure approx. 8½ x 8½. Join 4 squares together forming a 4-patch square. (photo 8) This square measures approx. 16½ x 16½ You will now have 3 16 ½ squares. 7 8 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 4 of 8

Piecing the Large Square Each square is built around one of the three white embroidered center square. Add the left and right side strips first, then the top and bottom. Building upon each of the embroidered 7½ x 7½ white squares and referring to the fabric labels on page 2, add 1 strip B to the right and left sides of the squares using Patchwork Foot #37 and sewing ¼ seam. Sew each strip making adding one square at a time in a clothesline manner. Make sure you have enough fabric as you near the end of a strip. Start a new strip if needed. There has been ample yardage configured to allow for this. Trim the sewn strips even with the top and bottom of the center embroidered square. Sew 1 strip B to the top and bottom. 9 Trim the sewn strip to form the three squares. Continue following the same steps above and add 2 strip G Then add 3 strip F (photo 9). The square should now measure 16 ½. Constructing the Quilt Follow the layout in photo 10 and sew the 4-Patch Squares and Large Embroidered Squares together in rows. Then sew rows together. To form the inner border, cut one of the 1½ x WOF border strips E in half. Sew one of the halves onto the end of another whole 1 ½ x WOF E strip using a diagonal seam. Sew the remaining half strip onto another whole 1 ½ x WOF E strip as before. There are now (4) E 1½ border strips (two long and two short). This step in necessary to make the strip long enough to fit the sides of the quilt. Attach to the quilt according to the layout photo. (photo 10). 10 To form the outer border, cut one of the 4 border strips A in half. Sew one of the halves onto the end of another whole A strip. Do not sew seam, but stitch the ends together with a regular ¼ seam. Sew the remaining half strip onto another whole A strip as before. There are not (4) A 4 border strip (2 long and 2 short). Attach to the quilt according to the layout photo. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 5 of 8

Layering the Quilt Stitch the 2 backing pieces together to form a large piece that measures 54 x 80. This is larger than the quilt front and will be trimmed later. Lay out the batting and spray with 505 Temporary Adhesive Spray or 101 Quilt Basting Spray. Affix the wrong side of the quilt backing to the batting. 11 Spray the remaining side of the batting with temporary spray. Center and affix the wrong side of the quilt top to the batting. Embroidered Quilt Designs Mark the center of all the 5 white squares with a removable marking pen. (photo 11) Hoop all layers of the quilt. You may have to loosen the screw on your hoop considerably in order to make enough clearance for the quilt sandwich. Tighten the screw on the hoop. (photo 12) 12 Wind a bobbin with Isacord Variegated #9924. Thread the needle with the same color. Refer to the quilt layout on the final page of instructions and embroider design #82004-42 (photo 13) on the white squares as pictured in the diagram. To create the leaf quilt design used on the top of the large squares, open design #82004-44. Duplicate design on the screen of the machine. 13 Mirror vertical Move motif so that the stem of the leaves touch. (photo 14) Scale entire design to 80% Mark the center of the top green strip on each of the large squares. 14 Wind a bobbin with Isacord Variegated #9868. Thread the needle with the same color. Hoop all layers of the quilt and stitch the design. (photo 15) 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 6 of 8 15

Quilting Wind a bobbin with Isacord #0520. Thread the needle with the same color. Attach BERNINA Stitch Regular (photo 16) or favorite free-motion foot. Stipple stitch around entire quilt but do not quilt in any of the white squares. Adding the 3-D Appliqué Flowers 16 You may want to refer to the.pdf instructions included with the embroidery design collection for completing the 3-D Appliqué Flowers. The flowers are attached to the quilt when you embroider the center. Layer the flower keeping centers aligned and pin through all layers. Mark the center of the yellow flower with removable marking pen. ( photo 17) You will be placing the flowers in the center of the remaining 6 white squares that you did not embroider with the quilt design.) Refer to the layout diagram) 17 Stick a pin through the center of the flower and down into the center of the white square. (photo 18) Pin the flower in place, but make sure that the pins are not in the center area that is to be embroidered. Stitch design # 82004-38. As sampled, the first color of the design was omitted and only the flower center was stitched as shown. (photo 19) Tufting 18 Tufting guides are included on the.pdf file included with the design collection. Lightly score the flowers on the bouquet design #82004-15 using an Xacto knife. Binding Trim off the quilt backing and batting so that all the edges are even with the quilt front. 19 Round the corners of the quilt using a coffee can lid or plate as a template. Join the 2½ fabric A strips together using a diagonal seam so that you have one long strip. Bind the quilt using your preferred method. 20 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 7 of 8
