Wood Specifications The infinite variety in color, grain and teture is what gives wood its rich character and natural warmth. Along with all of the differences among varying wood species, no two trees are alike. Climate, light, rainfall, and minerals in the soil all create diverse and unique grain and color patterns in each piece of wood. Because of all the variables and options available in choosing a wood species, we ve prepared the guidelines below to assist you in selecting the right wood for the desired end result. Alder The color tones of alder consist of a range of red to brown. Burl and pin knots are acceptable. Panel rips are arranged to form a reasonable blend of grain matching and wood color tones. Unlike most other wood species, hickory has a unique grain pattern and variety of color tones all of its own. Our standard hickory has a lot of character and is not selected for color. Our knotty pine has brownish-red tight knots and is suitable for rustic style cabinetry. Mahogany s color varies from golden brown to light reddish color tones. It has occasional pin knots or burl. Paint grade maple is used mostly for drawers and paint grade doors. Color is not selected. Red oak is selected for color. Defects such as knots and splits are removed. Character, such as burl and pin knots are acceptable. Panel rips are arranged to form a reasonable blend of grain matching and color tones. Rustic alder is a unique species that allows for many variations. Pitch, mineral, sap and knots are common. Color may vary from light tan sapwood to reddish brown heartwood blended throughout. Knot size, the percentage of mineral, sapwood and heartwood are not allowed to be specified by the customer. All material will be structurally sound. How to Measure the cost of Doors and Drawer Fronts The following eample is based on a Square Raised Panel Door. 1. Round the dimensions of the door to the net highest inch. Eample: 11 1/2 23 1/2 = 12 24 Height 2. Find the total square inches for the door. Eample: 12 24 = 288 (2 sq. ft min. for doors & 1 ½ sq. ft. min. for drawer fronts) Width 3. Multiply the sq. inches and the material cost. (See Material Cost Chart) Eample: Material Cost for Basswood is.0431.0431 288 square inches = $12.41 Height Width 4. Add the design cost (per panel) Eample: Material cost plus design cost equals $12.41 + $12.75 = $25.16 5. Any additional features. End Panels: Add 8% Panels over 37 tall: Add $ 10.00 for each oversized panel Height Width All panel ends will have a design cost per panel. All doors measuring over 24 wide will be made as a double panel unless specified as a single panel. Single panel doors over 24 wide will not be guaranteed. All doors over 41 in height will be made as double panel doors unless specified as single panel. Single panel doors over 41 high will not be guaranteed. Warranty All doors are guaranteed by Old Federal Millworks to be of good materials and workmanship, free from defects that render them unserviceable or unfit for the use for which they are intended for twelve months from the purchase date. Because of the nature of wood, it will epand and contract. Changes in temperature, humidity and other conditions produce wood movement. Because wood is like a sponge, even after it is finished, it will pick up moisture and easily epand in mountain and coastal regions causing the wood to warp, twist or crack. It will also dry out and easily shrink in desert regions causing the wood to warp, twist or crack. Consequently, proper precautions must be taken during the storage, handling and finishing operations. We monitor the level of moisture in the material we receive. A proper moisture level reading should be at or below 8%. Doors with moisture content above 8% will not be covered by our warranty. Under no circumstances should unfinished millwork be delivered to a job or site that is under construction or open to the elements. Doors must NOT be stored in areas subject to abnormal heat, cold, dryness or humidity. Raw doors have not been sealed and therefore must be sealed immediately upon receipt. Sealing the doors with equal coats of finish on both sides and all edges within one week from delivery is necessary to minimize moisture absorption. Cherry products require special care. Due to the natural photosensitivity darkening process, cherry products must be finished immediately upon receipt. Doors finished with water based products will not be warranted. Natural variation in color or teture of plywood and solid wood is not considered to be defective. To view details about rustic descriptions, colors, and grain variation for each material, please refer to the Wood Specifications page in our brochure. Old Federal Millworks will not be responsible for improper handling or finishing of raw doors. Old Federal Millworks will not be liable for problems with doors that have been left unfinished for more than one week after delivery. Products must be inspected upon receipt. Our guarantee covers the replacement of doors and drawer fronts in an un-finished state and in good condition, as originally delivered. A warp or twist of 3/16" of an inch or less is not considered a defect. A twist is measured by placing the face of the door against a true plane surface. Maimum sizes guaranteed for doors are 24 wide and/or 40 tall. Maimum sizes guaranteed for drawer fronts are 24 wide and 12 tall. In order for solid wood panel doors that are over 24 wide or 40 tall to be warranted, they must be made with multiple panels. Glass frame and mullion doors are not warranted against warpage. Door sizes are guaranteed +/- 1/16. Our warranty does not cover damage caused by our customer or the consumer. Warranty covers replacement of product only. Warranty does not cover labor, removal or installation of any product, or damage associated with improper handling, alteration or storage. All items claimed to be defective must be returned before credits are issued. All returns are subject to an inspection of the product. There are no other warranties of any kind epressed or implied.
