Later this year, on November 9 th, our County is taking part in the Lord Mayor s Show in London. The theme for the Lord Mayor s Show this year is The Energy of Life and we have a float that our County has designed that will take part in the procession with members from our County both on the float and walking alongside it. This resource has been designed for you to use with your unit to learn a little more about the Lord Mayor s Show. You can use it in whatever way you want; you can run a series of meetings on it, or just one meeting. It is divided into three sections entitled: London Energy of Life The Lord Mayor of London If there is an (R) next to the activity then there is something in the resource pack that corresponds to the activity. We have included activities that are suitable for all sections, so you can choose with your unit which ones you would like to do. You do not have to complete this resource to get the Lord Mayor s Show badge, but you can if you wish. Badges are still available to order until the 15 th July.

Play Kim s game with a London theme (R) You could use Transport related (taxi, tube map, toy bus) Sights of London (London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square) The Thames (boats, bridges, Eastenders) Kings & Queens (Corgis, Crown Jewels, The Tower of London) London Landmarks (R) Can you identify the London Landmarks? Can you identify the London landmarks in their silhouette form in the resource pack? The London Underground (R) How many answers can you get on the picture quiz? Play Name the Station Can you solve the anagrams? Can you solve the cryptic clues? Cockney Rhyming Slang (R) Can you work out what the cockney rhyming slang is? Can you make up your own? I Love London Design an I love London T-Shirt or Tea Towel

Sing Some London Songs (R) Oranges & Lemons London s Burning London Bridge is Falling Down Pearly Kings & Queens Bridges There are many bridges that cross over the River Thames. Can you design, make and name your own bridge? You could use straws, lollysticks, newspaper etc. Make some sequin art, or sequin models (available from Baker Ross, Crafty Crocs etc.) An East End Meal Pie & Mash with Liquor & Jellied Eels are dishes from the East End of London. Scone Challenge What unusual flavours of scones can you make? They could be sweet or savoury. Hold a Scone Ready Steady Cook Challenge with your unit. Buckingham Palace Garden Party If you have an outside area at your meeting place, why not hold a garden party? Make a sweet pie and mash with fruit pies, ice cream, jelly worms and green apple sauce Tea at the Ritz Make finger cucumber sandwiches & petit fours. Try different flavours of tea and drink them from china cups & saucers.

Dick Whittington (R) Dick Whittington is a legendary Mayor of London. Read the Dick Whittington story (play tableauxs whilst you are doing this). Play a game of cat and rat (you could play the parachute version Play the cat biscuit game. Gog & Magog Gog and Magog are wicker giants that are the traditional guardians of the City of London. They first walked at the head of the Lord Mayor s procession around five hundred years ago. Can you make your own wicker Gog and Magog? The Floats If you have ever wondered why a carnival is made up of floats, it's because for the first several hundred years the Lord Mayor's procession travelled by boat up the river. Crowds would watch from the banks of the Thames and a host of little Thames boats would tag along. Can you design your own float? Joining the Parade The Lord Mayor s Show has been part of London s history for almost 800 years. Why don t you come along and be a part of history? Make some bunting, flags and banners to bring to the parade. If you can t come to the parade then you can watch us on the television.

The Livery Companies There are over 100 Livery Companies affiliated with the Lord Mayor of London. How many can you find out about? Here are some activities associated with some of the Livery Companies. Worshipful Company of Fanmakers Make or decorate a fan. Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers Play some card games. Decorate or make a candle. The theme of the 2013 Lord Mayor s Show is The Energy of Life Some of these activities are linked to those that you will see on the Girlguiding Float this November. If you can t be there in person then watch us on the television. Zumba Attend a Zumba class, invite an instructor to your unit, or use the Wii Windmill Make a windmill. You can make them with paper and straws, or buy some to decorate. Plant a Bulb Plant a bulb and watch it grow at each meeting, or at home.
