This activity is abut learning hw t use ur pencils t create wnderful images like these. Take a lk at a few that All Saints students have dne in the past. (Take a lk at the riginals at the frnt f the rm as well). Pencil Drawing Let s start with pencil technique! Gene Franks wrte the incredible bk called Pencil Drawing we are ging t learn f the techniques he teaches in his bk. 1) Materials a. Pencils The degree f hardness f a pencil is determined by hw much clay is mixed in with the graphite. The sftest pencils have little r n clay. The Hardness is indicated by a letter and number cmbinatin printed n the head f the pencil. The scale begins with the H s which are hard and light and ges t the B s which are sft and dark. Hard 2H H F HB B 2B 4B 6B Sft b. Erasers Gene finds that the white, vinyl erasers (like the ne we have in ur kit) wrks the best, as it wn t damage the paper and is very effective. c. Page Prtectrs Yu want t keep yur hand ff the paper as much as yu can t keep it clean and nt smudge things. He suggests a few things, but the easiest fr us will be t use a blank piece f paper and keep it between ur hand and ur gd paper. 0
2) Basic Hand Psitins -use fr blcking in yur drawing -hld pencil nearly hrizntal t paper -mve lightly and lsely ( feel the paper as yu g) -hand desn t tuch paper -swing yur whle arm t d all shapes -als gd fr shading -simply make the under the hand psitin and flip yur hand ver -best fr making underlines and precise detailing ver the preliminary shading -gd fr thick and thin lines made by rlling the pint as yu drag the pencil acrss the paper -used fr hatching, shading and glazing -used fr precise lines, adding accents n yur almst cmplete drawing 3) Sample Textures and Strkes Remember that harder pencils are smth and light and sfter pencils are grainy and dark. With this in mind, lk at the pictures belw. Nw reprduce ne frm each line, using the crrect pencil. (Make sure yur pencils are sharp!) (Ex: in the first empty bx I will use my HB pencil and reprduce the Pencil Laid Flat image, then in the secnd empty bx I will use my 4B pencil and reprduce the Pencil Side f Pint image, and finally in the third empty bx I will use my 6B pencil and reprduce the Pencil n Pint image.) 4) Handling the pencil a. Pressure is very imprtant! Bear dwn and make darker strkes. Let up, run the pencil back and frth against the paper with medium light pressure, and a cntinuus transparent tne will result. b. Depth and Atmsphere hw d we give ur drawings a three dimensinal effect (depth)? Fregrund (what is in frnt) sharp, large texture and dark shading will make things appear clser. Ex: sharp underlines and edges, such as thse n the edge f a nse r eyelid, r a hat brim, bring that element frward n yur paper. Backgrund sft texture and light grays in a bleary mde give distance and depth. Ex: sft edges n a neck r under the chin make them recede. 5) Value Scale The lights and darks f a picture are knwn as the values. A scale f nine values ranging frm white t black has lng been established. A gd drawing shuld cntain several f these in rder t shw gd results. A mre detailed and finished drawing will use a wider range f grays. Let s d a few exercises. Remember: Shadws never have texture Shadws are shaded hrizntally always! Value is sensitive t the frm, s fllw the shape f the frm Always use a light surce Make line wrk darker and thicker in shade and barely there in pure light Cpy the example exactly fr each empty shape: Next, shade the bx belw frm dark t light using a pencil t create a gradual change in value. Use the first ne as yur example see hw it gets lighter as yu g frm ne bx t the next. Yur turn: 2
Nw that yu have practiced the many different values (very dark t white), shade this circle t create a three dimensinal shape (sphere) with a cast shadw. Nte where the light surce is and remember that it affects yur shading and yur shadw. Step 1 Shapes and Pencils! Step 1: D Steps 2 t 4 n the thumbnail sketches belw (just rugh nes). Step 2: Take yur gd paper, and draw a 1-2 cm brder in light pencil. Step 3: Lightly blck ut a cmpsitin in pencil using at least ne cube, sphere and cne. They can be any size and dimensin, and may even verlap each ther and/r run ff the edge ut f the brder (getting crpped). Fr mst success, think abut: balance fcal pint and creating interest in yur piece with: repetitin f shapes and value variatins in value shading and blending with different pencils (hard vs. sft) variatins in texture and line (pintillism, hatching, crss hatching, etc.) shading t create 3D lk Step 4: Start in the tp left hand crner and use yur pencil set t clur yur artwrk. Keep a clean piece f paper under yur hand t avid smudging! Use circle technique (same as fr clured pencils) and yur pencil blender. Make sure yu have the fllwing values: Very dark Medium grey Light grey White (leave the clean white f the page) Step 5: Make sure yu clean up any little smudges with yur eraser n the brder an din the pure white areas a nice clean finished prduct. Step 6: Put yur signature n it and hand it in with this handut! Thumbnail sketch #1 Thumbnail sketch #2 Thumbnail sketch #3 3

Step 2 Practice Walnuts This shrt exercise has been taken directly frm Gene s bk. It teaches us the steps t creating beautiful tnal studies. S, use the bxes n the right t exactly imitate the walnut. Then yu will fllw the same steps t create yur awe native tnal renderings. Yur Walnut! Step 1: Step 2: White f paper fr pure white Step 1: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: Nte hw the shadw and shading really sets ff the walnut! 6
Finally we are ging t d a large pencil masterpiece! Chse ne f the images that yur teacher will g thrugh each ne has all the steps as utlined by Gene.
