To: CCSA Visual Arts Applicants Visual Arts Department Cab Calloway School of the Arts 100 N. DuPont Rd., Wilmington, DE 19807 (302) 651-2700 Re: Visual Arts Assessments scheduled for Saturday, January 7 th, Saturday, January 14 th, & Thursday, January 19 th, 2017 From: Toniann DeGregory & Lindsey Ostafy, CCSA Visual Arts Instructors Dear Student and Parent/Guardian, Thank you for choosing the Cab Calloway School of the Arts. The following information is very important. Please read it carefully and note that instructions are slightly different for high school and middle school. HIGH SCHOOL: Besides a timed in-person drawing assignment, the portfolio you prepare will be the primary criteria by which your assessment will be based. The work that has been included in the portfolio should be representative of your child s interests, ability, commitment, and experience. Listed below is the information needed to properly prepare your child s portfolio for assessment. MIDDLE SCHOOL: Besides the four pieces placed in your portfolio for evaluation, you will be scheduled for a brief drawing session in the art studio in which you will be asked to observe objects of the teacher s choosing and draw them. Please take note of the following information: All artwork submitted should be placed into a *single envelope, satchel, or portfolio. A registration form is included with this information that should be securely attached to the portfolio. Be sure to fill it out in its entirety. Portfolios must include 4 required works; one self-portrait (preferably in pencil), one still life containing at least 3 household objects, one landscape drawing or painting, and one drawing of your choice. Any copies of published materials will not be reviewed i.e. please do not submit: Warner Brother s, Disney, Manga, Dragon Ball Z, Marvel, Grafitti or any other comic or cartoon character. 3-dimensional, large paintings, framed, or valuable artwork should be presented in slides or photographs. CCSA is not responsible for damaged or lost works of art. *All portfolios must be picked up between the dates of Monday, February 6 th through Friday, February 10 th, from 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM in the Main Office. Artwork left after this date will be disposed of. Thank you, Toniann DeGregory Lindsey Ostafy

Cab Calloway Visual Arts Portfolio It is very important that you begin preparing for you portfolio review as soon as possible. Discuss with your parents and present art teacher which work might be the most suitable for a portfolio. It is important that you understand the importance of submitting original works. Any work believed to have been copied from a published source will not be considered and will have a detrimental effect on your final score. Portfolios must be picked up between the dates of Monday, February 6 th to Friday, February 10 th, from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM in the Main Office. Requirements for MIDDLE SCHOOL Visual Arts Portfolio: 1. A self-portrait created from observation. Applicants should use a mirror and should spend from 30-60 minutes on this drawing. 2. A drawing of at least three household objects. We will be looking for line use, shadows to create form, and how well the applicant uses the page. From 30-60 minutes should be spent on this drawing. 3. A landscape drawing or painting must be from observation, fantasy, or science fiction. The student s ability to create a good composition and their ability to represent depth is important. 4. An additional piece of art of the student s choice. 5. An in-class timed drawing. The instructor will select the subject. Students must bring pencil. Requirements for HIGH SCHOOL Visual Arts Portfolio: Besides a timed in-person drawing assignment, the portfolio you prepare will be the primary criteria by which your assessment will be based. Not only will your acceptance be based on its submission, but the strength of your work will allow us to fairly determine your placement in the Visual Arts program. Once you have applied, an assessment date and a Portfolio Registration Form will be sent to you. Portfolios should be picked up on the designated days given to you upon delivery. The portfolio must contain: A still life containing at least three everyday objects, grouped and drawn from observation. A full-figure drawing of a person standing, seated or reclining, and drawn from observation. A self-portrait of yourself, preferably done in pencil and using a mirror. A landscape drawing or painting created from observation. Use your own yard, school, neighborhood or a park as a resource. Fantasy elements to add interest are permitted but demonstrating the ability to draw from observation is key. Four additional works that are representative of your arts interests, abilities, commitment and experience. The works and ideas represented should be your own and not taken from published sources. Suggested mediums may include any of the following: watercolor, acrylics or oil paintings; pencil, pen, chalk, charcoal or pastel; printmaking-- linoleum, etching, litho, mono-prints or silkscreen; collage or mixed medium; photography, sculpture and pottery and digital media. In-class timed drawing. Subject to be selected by instructor. Students must bring a pencil. The works and ideas represented should be your own, completed by your hand only, and not taken from published sources. Preparation of Slides & Photographs All framed or 3-dimensional works should be represented with slides or photographs. Each slide or photograph should be numbered, have the top identified and include the student s name. A Slide/Photo Inventory should be included with the slides or photos with corresponding numbers. On the slide/photo inventory please list a brief description, the size, and medium of each piece. Please be sure to include the student s name on the inventory sheet.
