HOW TO MAKE A R2D2 PENCIL HOLDER By Kaicie Messer 1
Introduction This set of instructions explains how to make a R2D2 pencil holder. It will not detail other characters. Any person of any age and skill level can complete this project. In order to complete this project you will need to be able to cut small pieces of paper and place them precisely as needed. Children should be supervised while doing the activity and may find some of the measuring and cutting difficult. The colors of paper used in this project will produce an accurate representation of R2D2, however they can be interchanged based on creative preference. These instructions will help break down the process and allow a clear and precise model to be created. At the end of this project you should have a functional pencil holder that resembles the Star Wars R2D2. NOTE: Star Wars, R2D2, and any imagery of the characters are the property of Disney and Lucasfilms. WARNING: SHARP OBJECTS REQUIRED, SUPERVISE CHILDREN 2

These rectangles will be referred to as upper head panels. 5. Cut a blue ¾ inch x ¾ inch from the blue construction paper. This will be called the eye square. 6. Draw a black circle on the center of the eye square. 7. Cut 14 blue ½ inch x ¼ inch rectangles. These will be referred to as the lower head panels. 8. Cut a blue ½ inch x 1 inch rectangle. This will be referred to as panel 1. 9. Cut a blue ¼ inch x ½ inch rectangle. This will be referred to as panel 2. 10. Draw two squares on panel 2. 11. Cut a black circle with a diameter of ½ inch. This will be referred to as circle 1. 12. Cut a blue 1 ¾ inch x ¾ inch rectangle. This will be referred to as panel 3. 5
13. Draw two ovals with 4 horizontal lines on panel 3. 14. Cut 3 blue ¾ inch x ¾ inch squares. These will be referred to as lower body panel. 15. Draw a black X on 2 of the lower body panels. 16. Creating the Head 1. Wrap the Pringles can in the white piece of construction paper and use glue to secure. Note: Figure 2 shows steps 1-7 completed 2. Wrap the silver construction paper around the top of the can, lining the ends in the same spot as white piece. Glue seam into place. 3. Glue an upper head panel horizontally directly over the seam. 4. Evenly space the other four upper head rectangles around the top of the can and secure with glue. 5. Place the eye piece between two top rectangles. For the best result glue on the opposite side of the can than the seam. Figure 2: Photo of head before lower head panels are attached Note: wherever you placed the eye square will now be referred to as the front of the can. 6. Place panel 1 underneath eye square on right side. 7. Place circle 1 to the right of panel 1. 8. Place panel 2 to the left of the panel 1. 9. Place a lower head panel the left of panel 2. 10. Evenly space the other 14 lower head panels around the can and glue into place. Refer to figure 3. Figure 3: Example of lower head panels 7
Creating the Body 1. Place the legs directly across from each other on either side of the can. Note: They should be an even distance away from the front of the can. 2. Place a side panel vertically on the left side of one of the legs. 3. Place a side panel vertically to the right of the same leg as seen in figure 4. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the other leg. Figure 4: Side view of can 5. Place an upper body panel underneath head on front. Note: Steps 5-17 are shown in Figure 4. 6. Place the second upper body panel underneath the one you just placed. 7. Placed the third upper body panel directly underneath the other two. 8. Place panel 3 on the front of the can. Align with the eye square. 9. Draw a vertical 1 ½ inch x ¾ inch rectangle to right side of panel 3. Note: Draw with a pencil first and then trace with a black marker. Figure 5: Front view of can after completing the creating the body section 10. Draw a horizontal ¾ inch x ¼ inch rectangle to the upper left of panel 3. 11. Draw a vertical ¼ x 1 inch rectangle underneath the horizontal rectangles and to left of panel 3. 8
12. Draw 6 horizontal 1/8 x ¼ inch rectangles to the left of the previous rectangle. 13. Draw a ¼ inch x ¾ inch rectangle below panel 3. 14. Draw a ¼ inch x ½ inch rectangle to the left of the previous one. 15. Draw a ¼ inch x ¾ inch rectangle to the right of the previous set of rectangles. 16. Draw another ¼ inch x ¾ inch rectangle to the right of the previous one. How To Make a R2D2 Pencil Holder 17. Draw 3 ½ inch x ½ inch squares underneath the previous set of rectangles. 18. Draw a long horizontal rectangle across the top back of the can. Figure 6: Back view of can after completing the Creating the Body section. Note: Steps 18-23 are shown in figure 6. 19. Draw a large 3/8 inch x 1 ½ inch horizontal rectangle in the middle of the back of the can. NOTE: The middle of the rectangle should be aligned with the seam. 20. Draw two similar rectangles (3/8 inch x 1 ½ inch) next to the previous one (one on each side). 21. Place the lower body panel with the circle underneath the back middle rectangles. Figure 7: Final Product 22. Place one of the remaining lower body panels underneath the back right panel. 23.
