SENIOR PARTNER S FOREWORD WHAT S NEW AT WONGPARTNERSHIP 2016 is setting out to be an exciting year for the Firm with significant strides made in a number of areas. It brings me great pleasure to share some news from the Firm in this first issue of our Newsletter this year. Since our venture into the Middle East in 2007, we have maintained our commitment to serve our clients with interests in the region. In our quest to deliver even higher quality legal services combined with knowledge on the ground, we have just announced our strategic alliance with Al Aidarous International Legal Practice. This will enable us to provide clients with Arabic and Singapore law capabilities from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, two of the most populous emirates in the UAE. The other development involves the streamlining of our management structure while grooming the next generation of leaders. With effect from March 2016, Ng Wai King assumes the position as Managing Partner, while Rachel Eng and Tan Chee Meng SC become our Deputy Chairmen. I am also happy to announce that from the beginning of the year, five of our brightest young lawyers have made the jump from Associates to Partners. My congratulations to them all and I trust they will take this as motivation to serve our clients even better. We also continue to earn plaudits from industry watchers, bagging two awards in The Asian Lawyer s Asia Legal Awards 2016 and four awards in Asian-Mena Counsel s Deal of the Year 2015, while maintaining top rankings in legal directories, reaffirming our position as a leading regional presence. In the latest rankings released by Chambers Asia-Pacific, we are ranked in 19 categories across various practices, with new Band 1 rankings for Banking & Finance, Capital Markets: Securitisation & Derivatives: Domestic, and Construction. These achievements would not have been possible without the support and encouragement from our clients which we are grateful for. As we count down towards our 25 th anniversary in 2017, we look forward to doing our best for all of you, our valued clients in Singapore and abroad. WONGPARTNERSHIP EXTENDS FOOTPRINT IN THE MIDDLE EAST 12 April 2016 WongPartnership has formed a strategic alliance with boutique national law firm Al Aidarous International Legal Practice, which will see the Firms working closely together to support clients in the Middle East. Over the last ten years, WongPartnership has been on the ground, advising Singaporean and other Asian-based companies who are entering the Middle East market, as well as Middle Eastern companies who are investing and have business interests in Asia. The Firm has had a presence in Abu Dhabi since 2008, which through this alliance will now expand to Dubai. Chambers Global and The Legal 500: Europe, Middle East & Africa have recognised WongPartnership in the areas of Corporate/Commercial, and Real Estate and Construction since 2011 and 2014, respectively. Senior Partner, Alvin Yeo, Senior Counsel (left) and Founder & Managing Partner of Al Aidarous International Legal Practice, Ali Al Aidarous (right) at the signing session for the alliance Sincerely Alvin Yeo, Senior Counsel Chairman & Senior Partner This strategic alliance with Al Aidarous builds on our existing regional footprint of offices in Singapore, China and Myanmar, as well as our other strategic alliances in Malaysia and Indonesia. WONGPARTNERSHIP IN THE SPOTLIGHT WONGPARTNERSHIP WELCOMES WONGPARTNERSHIP TOPS M&A AND DISPUTES IN ASIAN LAWYER AWARDS 2016 PROMOTIONS WongPartnership is pleased to announce the appointment of new Partners in 2016. 02 March 2016 - WongPartnership has achieved the rare feat of winning two awards in the The Asian Lawyer s Asia Legal Awards 2016. WongPartnership has won the M&A Deal of the Year: Southeast Asia and Dispute of the Year: Arbitration awards. For the M&A award, The Asian Lawyer noted that our lawyers stood out for their work done on the S$3.6 billion merger and reorganisation between the infrastructure subsidiaries of statecontrolled Temasek and JTC Corporation ( JTC ). The deal raised complicated cross-border issues in a number of legal disciplines including corporate and competition law, real estate and tax and will allow the combined entities to more effectively pursue large-scale, complex projects. WongPartnership represented JTC. For the Dispute of the Year: Arbitration award, The Asian Lawyer explained that The stakes were high in this dispute: control of one of the world s largest gold and copper mines, with assets worth more than US$1.5 billion. The dispute was complex but the WongPartnership team ably overturned its opponents arguments. All three members of the arbitration panel agreed with WongPartnership s reading of the statutes. They dismissed the claims for lack of jurisdiction - the first time an international panel ruled on whether investor claims against Papua New Guinea could be decided under ICSID arbitration. Although parallel proceedings continue in the Singapore Courts, this victory is noteworthy for its big potential impact on cross-border investment in Papua New Guinea. I would like to thank our clients for their continued support and trust in us to handle their largest and most complex disputes and transactions. Managing Partner, Ng Wai King FEATURED IN GLOBAL RESTRUCTURING REVIEW (GRR) 40 UNDER 40 01 March 2016 Partner, Smitha Menon is listed as one of the world s leading young insolvency and restructuring lawyers in Global Restructuring Review s ( GRR ) 40 under 40 survey. Smitha is part of the Firm s Restructuring & Insolvency team. Back Row, L-R: Sngeeta Rai (Specialist & Private Client Disputes); Chan Jia Hui (Financial Services Regulatory) Front Row, L-R: Pamela Tan (Infrastructure, Construction & Engineering); Sim Mei Ling (Commercial & Corporate Disputes), Nicholas Liu (Corporate/Mergers & Acquisitions) GRR, the newest imprint of independent legal publisher Law Business Research, launched with the 40 under 40 survey, featuring lawyers from 29 law firms across 16 cities around the world. Key indicators for qualifying the list include cases each lawyer had worked on, the quality of the recommendations received, and the presence their firm has in the regional or global marketplace. WongPartnership s Restructuring & Insolvency Practice comes highly recommended by independent legal directories such as Asialaw Profiles and is ranked Tier 1 by The Legal 500: Asia Pacific and Chambers Asia-Pacific. One of the greatest strengths of our Restructuring & Insolvency Practice is our ability to draw on the wealth of expertise in our other specialised practices. This enables our team to provide practical and commercially feasible solutions within a legally sound framework. Partner, Smitha Menon 04 WongPartnership 2016 WongPartnership 2016 05

WONGPARTNERSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY ALB CSR LIST 2016 28 January 2016 WongPartnership has been recognised for pro bono work, charities and community outreach in the CSR List 2016 by Asian Legal Business ( ALB ). This is the second consecutive year we have made it to the list since its introduction by ALB last year. WongPartnership s lawyers are no strangers to pro bono work and community outreach. The Firm, which has been a strong advocate of providing assistance to the needy, launched our Pro Bono Practice in 2012 in a bid to widen our scope of service offerings. Pro Bono is an integral part of our culture. We strongly believe that volunteer legal services bring benefits to both the community and the volunteer. WONGPARTNERSHIP INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION MOOT 2016 In the first quarter of 2016, WongPartnership organised the annual WongPartnership International Commercial Arbitration Moot for the eighth consecutive year. Students from both the National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University participated in the competition. The competition is designed to be educational, with a parallel objective of promoting oral and written advocacy skills. The moot problem covered wide-ranging contract law topics such as condition-versus-warranty and assessment of damages. The judges for the Finals comprised Justice Vinodh Coomaraswamy; WongPartnership s Head of Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group, Andre Maniam, Senior Counsel; and international arbitrator, Dr Michael Moser. Poster design for the Finals of the WongPartnership International Commercial Arbitration Moot 2016 CLAS FELLOWSHIP JUBILEE WHALE CHARITY GALA DINNER The Criminal Legal Aid Scheme ( CLAS ) was founded in 1985, to provide needy accused persons with legal representation in theft offences. This initiative was funded entirely through donations. In 2015, CLAS launched its CLAS Fellowship Scheme which introduced several new features to increase the number of accused-in-persons who can receive legal aid from CLAS. This entails a group of lawyers stationed on a full time basis at the Pro Bono Services Office taking up CLAS cases. Associate, Ng Shi Yang was the inaugural WongPartnership Fellow for 2015, and Associate, Ahmad Firdaus took over as the 2016 Fellow. WongPartnership is fully committed to CLAS work and embraces the cause that helps those who are without the financial means to obtain legal advice. Doing pro bono work may not be rewarding financially, but it pays in other ways. An emotional handshake, a sincere word of thanks, and tears of gratitude from not only the accused person but their family members these things become heartfelt when you know it comes from helping someone deal with issues of life and liberty. Knowing that you have used your professional skills to save a life is immensely satisfying. WongPartnership Fellow for 2015, Associate Ng Shi Yang WongPartnership supports the Law Society s pro bono efforts. So naturally (and thankfully), my Partners support my secondment to the CLAS Fellowship. CLAS work is very fulfilling and offers the junior advocate substantial court time to hone our skills. WongPartnership Fellow for 2016, Associate Ahmad Firdaus 20 February 2016 WongPartnership pitched in its share in biodiversity research by making a donation at the Jubilee Whale Charity Gala Dinner organised by Temasek Holdings, Mandai Safari Park Holdings, Wildlife Reserves Singapore and The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum. The event raised S$1.3 million and the amount raised will be used for scientific and educational efforts related to the sperm whale carcass found in Singapore waters in July 2015. FESTIVE CARDS - SUPPORT FOR PATHLIGHT SCHOOL Since 2012, we have been featuring artwork from students in Pathlight School s Artist Development Programme in our Festive Year End and Lunar New Year greeting cards. We are proud to be a supporter of the Autism Resource Centre (Singapore), the parent charity organisation of Pathlight School, whose spirit of teamwork and a passion for excellence embody our community-aware ethos.
