Here is some guidance for selecting a chess class for your child. Our coaches recommend that players take class with their peers because it creates a more socially balanced class. However, this philosophy is just a guideline. For example, if your young daughter is passionate about chess, she will be placed in a more advanced class if that is where she's most comfortable. If your fifth grade son wants to try chess for the first time, there's a spot for him in the club. Please email chessclub@medinapta.org to coordinate placement for your child if the categories below don't fit his or her experience. We will work with our coaches to find the right class. The chess club reserves the right to make adjustments to class placements after registration is closed. Keep this page for your records 2017-2018 Volunteer Requirements Our Chess Club has a long history of excellence through reliance on our dedicated volunteers. We could outsource our program, but instead we keep our club NON-PROFIT and parent-run. This enables us to handselect the top coaches in the country and keep our costs down. To encourage participation, each family is required to submit a $150 FULLY REFUNDABLE Volunteer Deposit with their chess registration form. If you meet your required volunteer commitment of 4 shifts, your deposit will be fully refunded at the end of the season. All volunteer positions can be found on the Medina Elementary PTA website at medinapta.org. Full time classroom volunteer receive free tuition for the school year. If interested, please contact chessclub@medinapta.org for more information. Each Family is required to volunteer a total of 4 shifts: o TWO shifts in the classroom, PLUS one TWO-HOUR shift at a Medinahosted chess tournament, OR o TWO two-hour shifts at a Medina-hosted chess tournament, OR o FOUR shifts in the classroom. Our hope is to fully refund 100% of these deposits! No Chess Experience Needed! Classroom volunteers will meet in the cafeteria at 12:15 pm. You will meet your class, help transport supplies to the classroom, help the chess coach maintain order in the class, and make sure the kids get signed out by their grown-up. You must stay with the students until the last child has been picked up by his or her parent or guardian. You are responsible for reserving your Chess Club volunteer slots. A volunteer schedule will be managed on the Medina PTA website. If you are unable to work the Wednesday classroom shifts, you may opt to work TWO two-hour shifts at the tournaments instead. If you sign up for a volunteer slot and cancel less than two weeks prior, you are responsible for replacing yourself. You must contact chessclub@medinapta.org with the name of your replacement. If you or your replacement does not show up, your volunteer deposit will be deducted by $50 per two hour tournament shift, and $50 per classroom shift. For liability insurance purposes, each volunteer MUST be a member of the Medina Elementary PTA. If you intend to have a babysitter or other caregiver fulfill your volunteer requirement, he/she must first become a PTA member. Please respect the chess coaches and our chess scholars by refraining from cell phone use (including texting and email) during your classroom volunteer shift. It is important that our classroom volunteers model respect for, and interest in, the sport of chess. Buy-Out: If you are unable to volunteer at Medina Chess Club, you may buy out your volunteer hours. The full season buy-out is $150. If you know you will not be able to volunteer at all this year and plan to forfeit your $150 deposit (aka "buy-out"), please let us know up front so we do not have to deal with "no shows" during the year.
