PSM-ME-/-P. Short Description The rail-mountable and compact RS-485 repeater, PSM-ME-/-P, was specially developed for the high demands for use in fieldbus systems. The device is snapped onto standard EN mounting rails in the switch cabinet and supplied with 24 V. The main areas of application are: Electrical isolation/ bus segmentation Increasing system availability in the event of short circuits in bus lines Increasing the range Increasing transmission rates Extending the number of stations to n x 32 Implementing hybrid and network structures The PSM-ME-/-P repeater can be used universally in all conventional 2-wire bus systems, such as: PROFIUS MODUS RCKUS (Endress & Hauser) SUCONET-K (Moeller) UNI-TELWY (Telemecanique) DNUS (Danfoss) RS-US (Landis & Staefa) NET 2000 ( & R) INSUM () J-US (Merlin Gerin) JET-WY (Jetter) S-US (SI) and approximately 60 other proprietary bus systems The following features of the repeater are particularly outstanding: Supports all bus systems with URT/NRZ data format and 0/ bits character length Transmission rate 4.8 kbit/s to.5 Mbit/s utomatic transmit/receive changeover Integrated, connectable terminating resistors High-quality 3-way isolation ( // RS-485 // RS-485) Integrated surge voltage protection with transient discharge to the mounting rail Supply voltage of 24 V DC or C to suit the switch cabinet Convenient connection with pluggable COMICON screw terminal blocks If you have any technical questions, please contact us at: PSM-HOTLINE:+49/(0)52 35/3-9890 FX:+49/(0)52 35/3-9899 e-mail: interface-service@phoenixcontact.com Headquarters: Phoenix Contact GmbH & Co. This information can be found in the system manufacturer s manual. Example applications for repeaters Electrical isolation/ bus segmentation (fig. 3) - allows the permitted length of the bus line to be doubled/multiplied. - increases the availabilty in the case of bus line short-circuits, since the short-circuit only affects the particular power segment. - allows the number of stations to be increased to n x 32, since the full RS-485 specification is valid in each power segment. - allows higher transmission rates with division into smaller segment lengths. Hybrid/network structures (fig. 4, page 9) are made possible for the first time by the use of repeaters. freely selectable installation concept, independent of the restrictive line structure is thus possible. ctive branch lines allow the full RS-485 specification to be exploited per segment in star and tree structures, too. System-specific example of an application for PROFIUS (fig. 4, page 3) The correlation between permitted conductor length (without repeater) and transmission rate, as specified in the PROFIUS standard EN 5070-2-2, is shown in the following table. Terminating resistors for the RS-485 connections To terminate the RS-485 bus line, there is a connectable terminating resistor integrated in the device for each port. The terminating resistor is activated by moving the slide-type switch to ON (fig. 3). The bus line must be terminated at the two most distant bus ends. n exemplary hybrid installation is shown in fig.4, comprising line, star and tree topologies. The terminating resistors shown here make it clear that the two most distant bus ends of a power segment must always be terminated. It also becomes clear that a repeater opens a separate segment that must in turn be terminated at the most distant bus ends. In this example, the repeaters are used to increase the range or to add branch lines. To bridge greater distances, several segments, separated by repeaters, are wired in series. The resulting maximum bus coverage can be seen in the following table.
