Dartmouth High School Career Development 10 Career Cruising: Portfolio and Using Career Matchmaker Introduction To Career Cruising: Career Cruising is an Internet-based career exploration and planning tool you may use to explore career and college options. It is never too early to start thinking about what you are interested in so you can take classes you will enjoy and develop plans for reaching the goals you set for yourself. Career Cruising can be accessed from school, from home, or wherever you have access to the Internet. Use the following instructions to access the Career Cruising website: Website Link: www.careercruising.com User name: dartmouth Password: careers Activity # 1: Creating A Career Portfolio: (Value: Four Points) Think of your career portfolio as your own online filing cabinet. In you portfolio you can keep all the information you need to plan your education and career path. To create your portfolio, follow these steps: From the Main screen, click on the blue PORTFOLIO button in the top menu bar. Step 1. Click on the grey NEW PORTFOLIO button to create a new portfolio. Enter your information and then select your own Portfolio Username and Password, so that only you can get into your portfolio. Write down your Portfolio Username and Password in a safe place in case you forget them. Click on CREATE PORTFOLIO. Portfolio User Name: Portfolio Password: Please note that it is also a good idea to fill in your email address, so that you will be able to retrieve your portfolio username and password if you ever forget them. Step 2. On the Quick Links menu, select Things to Remember. If you want to learn more about What is a Portfolio or about Protecting Your Privacy, click on the links at the bottom of the page. Step 3. On the Quick Links menu, select Update Your Personal Profile. You don't need to fill out this section right now, but if you want this information to appear in a resume, you will have to fill it out here first.
Activity # 2: Using Career Matchmaker: (Value: Five Points) From the Career Cruising Main Screen, click on Career Matchmaker. Enter your first and last names in the space provided, and then click on Start A New Career Matchmaker Session. Please read the instructions on the introduction page then click Start. Answer the questions. (Do your best! The more thought you put into these answers, the better your results will be. If you need more information about a question, click on the MORE INFO button beside the question.) After you answer the first 39 questions, you will come to the Career Suggestions screen. This screen shows the careers that are suitable for you based on your responses to the questions. Once you look these over, go through the second round of questions as well. To begin the second round of questions, click on the blue Answer More Questions To Improve My Results button on the right side of the Career Suggestions screen. Answer as many additional questions as you can, and then click the grey View Career Suggestions So Far button near the bottom of the screen. Career Matchmaker will update your list of career suggestions. Now save your career suggestions by clicking on the gray Save To My Portfolio button on the right hand side of the screen. If you already have a Portfolio, just enter your Portfolio username and password and click Login. If you don t have a portfolio, click on the New Portfolio button and enter the required information.
