Kurzweil 1000 is a software program that scans paper text documents, converts scanned documents to digital text, and reads digital text. Kurzweil creates and speaks typed documents. Q. May I use Kurzweil 1000? A. Kurzweil 1000 is available to qualified Harvard Extension School students, who have been approved for access to the Adaptive Technology Lab. To begin using Kurzweil, launch the program by double clicking the desktop Kurzweil icon. Kurzweil speaks an introductory pop-up box text about registration and help. Either press the Enter Key in the lower right hand of the keyboard to be prompted through information about Kurzweil, or click the pop-up box OK button, and continue to use Kurzweil 1000. Q. How do I create a document using Kurzweil 1000? A. To create a document using Kurzweil 1000, after launching Kurzweil 1000, choose File -> New. Kurzweil speaks the choice. Then, begin typing. Kurzweil speaks the typed letters. Choose File File -> New Q. How do I scan a document using Kurzweil 1000? A. After launching Kurzwei 1000, confirm that the scanner is turned on. Place your text document on the scanner. From the top menu, choose Scan -> Start New Scan. If you would like to hear the scanned text once the scan is complete, from the top menu choose Read -> Start Reading. From the top menu, choose Scan, then -> Start New Scan Q. How do I read a previously-saved document using Kurzweil 1000? A. After launching Kurzwei 1000, Choose File -> Open. Browse to folder with Kurzweil documents. This should either be on the the E: drive, where you have inserted your personal USB storage device; the D: drive, where you have inserted your personal DVD or CD storage device; or, on the T: drive temporary storage space, not recommended. Choose where you would like to save your document. Save your documents to your own personal external storage device (CD, floppy disk, or USB drive). 3

IMPORTANT: In an emergency, you may save your documents temporarily to the T drive: double click on My Computer -> Temporary Storage (T:). The T drive gets wiped from time to time, unannounced.
