SC9.6: Applied Science and Research IICWG XI Investigate and report on seasonal Arctic sea ice forecasting methods implemented by the IICWG ice services and other groups. Applied Science and Research IICWG XI SC 10.1: To facilitate identification of complementary &/or common activities and areas for collaboration, each national ice service to be requested to identify and prioritize their three top research requirements for the next five years. SC 10.2 Applied Science and Research IICWG XI Contact Wolfgang Dierking to investigate IICWG participation in ESA Living Planet Symposium with a session focused on multi-frequency SAR and operational ice applications Responsible: Roger De Abreu Target Date(s): October 31, 2009 Status: Closed Sea ice session held. Issues represented.

SC 10.3 Applied Science and Research IICWG XI Distribute Technical Note 1-3 of ESA-funded C-CORE Multi- Parameter SAR project to IICWG Science group towards increasing collaboration on multi-frequency SAR studies. Responsible: Roger De Abreu Target Date(s): November 2009 Status: Closed Information distributed.

Applied Science and Research IICWG XI SC 10.4: Distribute final SWIPA definitions of ice extent and ice area to Science and Data Committee. Responsible: Leif Toudal Pedersen, Lead Target Date(s): When definitions finalized Status: Closed At present not included in SWIPA definitions and unsure if a useful definition will be included in the future. 11

Applied Science and Research IICWG XI SC 10.5: Contact NSIDC to help ensure that users of NSIDC s ice extent products are aware that they should not be used to support marine navigation tactically or strategically. Responsible: Sean Helfrich Target Date(s): December 2009 Status: Open 12

Applied Science and Research IICWG XI SC 10.6: Develop a control image dataset and testing protocol to investigate the accuracy and bias in the visual estimation of total sea ice concentration. Results will support data assimilation, climate studies, operator training and quality assessment. Responsible: Leif Toudal and Roger De Abreu Target Date(s): Results presented at IICWG XI Status: In progress Control dataset and protocol created. 13

Applied Science and Research IICWG XI SC 10.7: Communicate with Vladimir Ryabinin regarding WMO paper on short term prediction (topic to be confirmed). Ensure that DA meeting in Sweden includes a discussion on the proposed whitepaper. Responsible: Leif Toudal and Tom Carrieres Target Date(s): DA meeting Status: Open 14

Applied Science and Research IICWG XI SC 10.8: Contact Vladimir Ryabinin (WCRP) to investigate a SCOR proposal for multi-year funding for IICWG s DA workshop. Responsible: Leif Toudal, Lars-Anders Breivik and Tom Carrieres Target Date(s): December 2009 Status: Open 15

Applied Science and Research IICWG XI SC 10.9: To raise JAXA s awareness of the operational use and value of PALSAR for operational ice monitoring, provide Leif Eriksson with a slide for inclusion in his presentation at the ALOS PI workshop in Hawaii. Responsible: Roger De Abreu and Sean Helfrich Target Date(s): October 23, 2009 Status: Closed Leif included slide in his presentation. 16

Applied Science and Research IICWG XI SC 10.10 Contact Penny Wagner to further investigate IICWG involvement in APECS. Also forward IICWG research priorities to APECS for improved visibility of IICWG research priorities in graduate studies.
