Session 1 Dictation Warm-up Slowly dictate the three sentences twice. The students write down the sentences as you dictate them. a. The animals at the zoo make a lot of noise. b. She goes swimming every summer. c. English and Spanish are languages. Introduce the Present Simple negative using a few examples about yourself. As you speak, write the verbs on the board. Write the examples with the third person singular (he/she/it) in a separate column. For example: I'm a teacher, I teach because I like children. I work here. I don't work outside. Every morning I drink coffee because I like it. I don't drink tea. I eat apples. I don t eat oranges. I often listen to music. I like rock music. I don t like classical music. I play the piano. I don't play the guitar. I like Mickey Mouse. I don t like Donald Duck. And you? Every morning Sarah drinks (tea, milk ) because she likes it. Sarah doesn't drink (coffee). Ethan plays basketball. He doesn't play the guitar. Help students produce similar sentences about themselves. Brainstorm verbs they know and list them on the board. Give them three minutes to think of three sentences about themselves. Ask them to turn to their neighbor and share. Then, for 3 rd person singular, write two or three students names on the board. Make a list under their names of the verbs they used. Make sentences with the class about those students, using 3 rd person singular, and stressing the added s. Elicit the difference between the two columns and the rules of the present simple in the negative. Show the movie. If time allows, using any of the verbs generated in the warm- up, students round robin. Student A makes a sentence. Student B repeats the sentence, makes a negative sentence, and then adds a sentence about him/herself. Student A: I speak Spanish. Student B: He speaks Spanish. He doesn t speak Beepish. I love pizza. Student C: She loves pizza. She doesn t love onions. I play basketball. Student D: She plays basketball. She doesn t play games. I go to the zoo.
