May 2010 Inside this issue: Page Calendar 2 New Members 2 WWI Fighter Performance and Technology May 2010 Meeting and Awards AIAA Distinguished Lecturer: Dr. Scott Eberhardt Aerodynamics Engineer, Product Development, Boeing Commercial Airplanes February Photos 3 4 March Photos 5 23 March Photos 6 Special Points of Interest New Members Page 2 Abstract Why did WWI pilots wear scarves? Was the Red Baron s tri plane as good as legend suggests? These questions are answered in the talk about WWI fighter performance and technology. During the first one hundred years of flight great advances were made in fighter performance. However, fighter tactics developed in the early years of WWI are still in use today. Using archival data, modern analysis and pilot reports, a story is weaved about the development of the fighter in WWI. Climb and turn performance of airplanes are compared and tactics they fostered will be discussed. Speed, handling and stall speeds will be discussed in relation to the utility of these aircraft. Speaker Biography Dr. Scott Eberhardt earned his undergraduate degree at MIT in 1980 in Aeronautics and Astronautics, followed by a Master's Degree in the same field and institution in 1981. He then continued his studies at Stanford University (Continued on page 5) Dr. Scott Eberhardt May Meeting Date: Thursday 20 May 2010 Location: Copper Canyon Café 5455 Gibson SE Albuquerque NM (505) 266-6318 Cost: $Your own drink/meal Agenda 5:30 Meet and Greet 6:00 Dinner 6:50 Awards/Presentation Please R.S.V.P. to Don Nash (505) 292-2328, or 250-6574 denash1616@aol.com Page 1

March 23rd AIAA Meeting Lt. Gen. George Muellner Chair s Corner What a busy year it has been! I can t believe it s almost over. We ve had a fantastic, enthusiastic and energetic team this year with a variety of speakers, awards and community activities with Pre-College outreach, School-to-World, and Science Fair judging. Next year we are very lucky to have up for the Chair position Lt. Aaron M. Schinder, current Vice Chair, but note that this does leave one very important vacancy on the election slate which needs to be filled for 2010-2011: Vice Chair. If you would like more information about this role please contact me or any of the other officers and we can fill you in on the duties. This is a great opportunity to network, get involved and make a difference in your community as well as the direction of AIAA. It has been my pleasure and an honor to serve you as AIAA Chair for the 2009-2010 year and I thank you very much for the opportunity. Sincerely, Elizabeth Kallman AIAA-Albuquerque Chair Page 6
