The Cold Foil Module from Heidelberg FoilStar
FoilStar for brilliant results. Cold foil fi nishing produces outstanding print products. Stylish and cost-effective the art of foil finishing in offset printing. FoilStar, the cold foil module from Heidelberg, makes for a whole host of exceptional finishings for labels, packaging, and high-quality commercial print jobs, offering brilliant metallic effects that give your customers print products high added value. Using FoilStar on the Speedmaster XL 75, Speedmaster CD 102 and Speedmaster XL 105 enables a wide range of printing stocks to be finished to impressively high levels of quality. The cold foil is applied inline in an offset printing unit. This means you benefit automatically from the advantages of offset printing such as short makeready times, register accuracy, fast job changes, and low printing form costs. Foil is applied with a high level of precision using FoilStar, enabling fine elements such as text, lines, screens, and solids to be applied in a single pass with complete accuracy. This technology is particularly cost effective for short runs and frequent job changes. And as you can also use FoilStar to take advantage of the high production speed of your Speedmaster, your work is as productive as always. Cold foil finishing the technology for brilliant effects. In contrast to other special effect foil applications, which require a letterpress or flexographic unit, FoilStar applies the cold foil using two offset printing units. In the first unit, high-tack glue is applied using the inking unit and an offset printing plate either as a spot application or over the entire sheet. The second, actual cold foil unit has take-up and take-off units for applying the foil. Along with the sheet, it is fed into the nip between the blanket and impression cylinders and applied by pressure to the areas of the printing stock coated with glue. When the backing is removed, the metal layer remains on the sheet.
Subsequent overprinting of the foil allows you to achieve a variety of color nuances. The option of varying the number (one to six) and width of the foil webs enables you to precisely adapt the foil consumption to the current job. Sensors record and continuously control the web tension for foil take-up and take-off and the individual reel diameters. A further benefit is that both printing units can be changed over rapidly and are then immediately available for printing. Application of glue (1): A high-tack glue is applied using an offset printing plate. 1 Application of foil (2): The foil is applied to the sheet in the nip between the blanket and impression cylinders. 2 Advantages for your printing process: Makeready times: You can switch the printing units between print and foil operation quickly and easily. Productivity: You can finish a wide range of printing stocks efficiently in a single pass without affecting the machine speed. Cost-effectiveness: You can adapt the foil requirements to each print job by using one to six foil webs. You also benefit from low printing form costs. Quality: You achieve brilliant metallic effects for both fine elements and solids. Overprinting the foil creates a variety of color tones. You benefit from high-precision register from foil to ink. The printing stock is not subject to thermal loading. Step 1: Glue is applied Glue with a high tack level is applied using an offset inking unit and offset plate. Glue Printing stock Step 2: Foil is applied The foil is applied to the printing stock using pressure. Cold foil Backing Step 3: Backing is removed The backing is removed and the cold foil remains stuck to points on the sheet to which glue was applied. Its high tack level leads to extremely precise results. Printing stock coated with glue and cold foil Backing with waste foil
