MasterWorks III Four Leaf Clover Quilt Believe it or now, this Four Leaf Clover Quilt started with a simple heart design! Using MasterWorks III and the unique Mirror X4 feature, you can transform a plain heart into a four leaf clover. This quilt is perfect for St. Patrick s Day décor or celebrating your Irish heritage throughout the year. Skill Level: Intermediate Created by: Diane Kron, Software and Embroidery Project Manager Supplies: Baby Lock embroidery machine MasterWorks III from Designer s Gallery 1Yard of green variegated cotton print 1Yard of white tone-on-tone cotton fabric for embroidery and backing Batting Baby Lock Tear-Away Soft Stabilizer Madeira Thread Chest for embroidery {Designer s Gallery} MasterWorks III Four Leaf Clover Quilt Page 1

Scroll down and select the Heart shape. This will place the shape on the workspace. 3. To resize the shape, click on the side resize tool and drag inward to decrease the width of the artwork (as shown in the illustration below). 4. Click on OK to place the shape on the workspace. icon. {Designer s Gallery} MasterWorks III Four Leaf Clover Quilt Page 2

5. To apply stitches to the artwork, follow the next set of steps: To select all elements of the Artwork, click on All Items under Sequence View. To apply stitches to the areas, click on the down arrow below the Apply Stitches icon. Scroll down and select Appliqué. Under the Properties field, click on the down arrow next to Applique Type and select Motif. Click on the down arrow next to Motif field and select Motif number F070. Click on Apply. 6. Center the design in the hoop by clicking on Center under the Modify tab. 7. Click on File Save As and give the design a name and then save into the Working File folder under Masterworks III in the.blf working file format. Send the design to the embroidery machine in the.pes file format. 8. From the white tone-on-tone fabric cut four sections that measure 10 square. 9. Hoop the stabilizer in the 200mm x 200mm hoop along with one 10 square white section. 10. Embroider the clover design while following the color stops for Appliqué. The green fabric should be used for the appliquéd sections. When trimming the fabric, remove the hoop from the machine without un-hooping the fabric. Trim close to the outer edge on the tack-down stitch, replace the hoop on the machine, and continue to embroider. Embroider all four squares in this manner. 11. Trim the embroidered squares to 8½ while being careful to center the design in the square. In the sample, the June Tailor Get Squared 8½ {Designer s Gallery} MasterWorks III Four Leaf Clover Quilt Page 4

ruler was used (as shown in the following illustration). Assembly: 1. From the green fabric cut the following sections for the sashing: Two sections 3 x 8½ Three sections 3 x 19 Two sections 3 x 23¾ 2. Lay the four white embroidered sections on a flat surface to form a square leaving 3 between each of the sections. Place one 3 x 8½ section between the top two sections and one between the bottom two sections. 3. Using a ¼ seam allowance, sew the green strip to each of the two sided embroidered sections. Repeat for the bottom section. 4. Sew one 3 x 19 to the bottom edge on one of the pieced sections. 5. Sew the remaining embroidered section to the opposite edge of the green section. Sew the other two 3 x 19 sections to the top and bottom edges of the piece. Sew the remaining two sections to the sides. 6. Press the seams toward the green fabric. 7. Sandwich the batting between the pieced top section and the back section for the quilt. 8. Quilt as desired. 9. From the remaining green fabric, cut three 2½ wide strips across the width of the fabric. 10. Trim the ends to a 45 angle. 11. Piece the ends together to form one continuous strip. Press the seams open. 12. With wrong sides together fold and press the strip lengthwise. 13. Pin the binding 4 down from the corner. Using a ¼ seam allowance and starting 4 down from the end of the binding strip, sew the binding in place. Stop ¼ from the corner. 14. Fold the bias strip up with the edge of the binding even with the edge on the quilt top. 15. Fold the bias strip down so that the binding is placed over the second quilted edge. Start to sew at the corner and continue down the second {Designer s Gallery} MasterWorks III Four Leaf Clover Quilt Page 5

side of the quilt. Stop again ¼ from the corner and cut the thread. Repeat these steps for the remaining two corners. 16. After turning the last corner, trim the binding strip and tuck the end into the starting point on the binding. 17. Press the binding to the back side of the quilt and hand sew the binding to secure.
