Grade 9 SKETCHBOOK FUN 10% of Final Mark Your should demonstrate a different drawings: - Representational drawings (still life, figure, portraits, landscapes) - Collage works (mixed media sources) - Abstract drawings - Sketches (brainstorming and preliminary and concepts) - Conceptual Designs - Storyboards - Cartoons and Doodles - Poetry and Writings (song lyrics, memorable quotes) - Reflection entries about your work - Research drawings - Art Articles from the newspaper - Drawing in the style of another artist (appropriation) - Parody of an existing work - Fantasy dream drawing - Object at extreme angle or point of view Materials: Sketchbook, pencil eraser (optional: ink, paint, etc.) Guidelines: Students must bring their s and drawing utensils to every art class. Students will have some time throughout the week to work on assignments. Students will need to work on sketches at home to develop acceptable imagery. Sketchbooks will be collected twice throughout the semester. Aim to complete at least 1 sketch every 2 weeks. Entries need to be (in order). Requirements: Remember to DATE your drawings as you will be evaluated through the semester (ongoing). Each drawing/ creation should take a minimum of one hour. If you choose to make something (instead of drawing) it must be documented in your by you taking a photograph of it and then pasting this image into the. Marking for Sketchbook assignments: You must complete a minimum of 5 assignments for this course. If you do more than 5, I will choose the best 5 to mark. The evaluation will be based on the different drawings demonstrating on going and personal investigation of different themes/ subject matter throughout the semester.

Dates/ Assignments: *choose 2 of the following works, make sure to number your choices in your. checklist: 1. Close your eyes and draw a random line or shape on your page. Now look at your line and turn it into an interesting drawing. Add details and shading. 2. finish this sentence then illustrate. wouldn t it be strange if? 3. *choose your final 2 sketches based on the following list. 1. Draw a place around the outside of your home. This can be a plant, part of the building or objects on the porch. Use ink and watercolor to create a strong contrast between the color and the ink. Crosshatching as a style is suggested but not required. 2. Look at yourself in a spoon- draw the distorted image 3. Study your feet and shoes. Create a strong thick and thin contour drawing of your shoes drawing from different angles. Include more than one drawing on the same page over lapping and filling the format. Pen or pencil 4.Make a DETAILED drawing of your eye and the area around it. Include everything you see when observing closely in clear, even lighting. 5. Draw a series of animals in motion. Such as a cheetah running, a rabbit hopping, a bird flying. This can be in any media and you can use just three views or images in a row. 6. grouping of photographs of you, your family or friends in collage form 7. Draw a piece of furniture in your house. This can be in color or black and white. Sit in an area and observe the lines and shapes of the piece. Create a format around your observed area and look for textures, gradations, wood grain or interesting shapes and make a detailed study. 8. pasting a piece of a magazine on paper and then drawing outward 9. ADDITIONAL SKETCHBOOK IDEAS/ INSPIRATION * you may choose to swap out any from the above list as Mrs. Mezei indicates. * for each option be sure to consider the elements and principles of design!!! 1) What s your favourite animal? Use it as your inspiration today. 2) Take a 5 minute walk, then make something using whatever materials are available where you ve ended up. Leave it there for someone else to discover, but be sure to document it first - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 3) Look in the kitchen and work with the first fruit or vegetable you spot. It could be in the form of juice, jam or even canned. Sketch your chosen object. 4) Make a stencil and use it to create a piece of work in your. 5) Transform an old book into something new by cutting, folding, gluing and so on. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 6) Illustrate something that floats on water. 7) Create a bridge. Connect two things in a creative way. It could be small enough for an ant or big enough for an elephant to cross it. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 8) Dreams. Use a recent dream as inspiration for your sketch today. 9) Toys. Build something out of old toys/ parts, use them in a sculptural way to make something new. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 10) Write a haiku about something that happens to you today or is in the news today, Illustrate whatever imagery comes to mind from the poem - take a photograph and print it to put into your. HAIKU: a short, non-rhyming, 3 line, traditional Japanese poem. In English they usually have 17 syllables; 5 syllables on the first and third lines, and 7 syllables on the second line. eg. Daily skull making Reminded me to live life By thinking of death 11) Create a large version of something that would normally be much smaller. Check out the artist Claes Oldenburg for inspiration. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 12) Write a ten word science fiction story. Illustrate it. 13) make a puzzle or make something using pieces from a puzzle. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 14) Work with only numbers today. You could make an image using numbers, make something into number shapes, do something involving a calculator, or if its not a drawing - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 15) Work with words. make an image with just words or letters. You can cut them from magazines, draw them yourself, or print out words on a computer to work with. If it is not a drawing - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 16) Work backward. Work in front of a mirror, looking at what you re creating only in the mirror until you re finished. If it is not a drawing - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 17) Make an invitation to an everyday event you wouldn t normally invite people to. Bonus: send them out. Include a copy in your. 18) Use the world of insects as your inspiration today. 19) Flip to a random page in a book at hand and make something inspired by the first sentence you read.- take a photograph and print it to put into your. 20) create something using an old map or something that ends up looking like a map.- take a photograph and print it to put into your.

21) Make something out of wood. (any kind will do; twigs, sticks, toothpicks, construction scraps, etc.) 22) Triangulate. Only work with triangle shapes today - or make a giant triangle with a bunch of stuff. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 23) Make a passport, travel poster, monetary unit, or other item for a fictional country or another planet.- take a photograph and print it to put into your. 24) Pick a piece of music you love (or hate) and use it for inspiration for todays piece. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 25) Make something surreal. (look up the art of Magritte or Dali online for some inspiration) IF it is not a drawing- take a photograph and print it to put into your. 26) Make a rubbing by placing paper over rough objects and using charcoal or chalk to pick up the details. Gravestones are the classic source for this technique. - put into your. 27) Cut holes in the pages of a magazine or book so that what you reveal beneath creates something new. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 28) Use fingerprints/thumbprints to create an image or portrait. 29) Work with homonyms today - look online to find more examples; bear/ bare, night/ knight, sail/ sale). 30) Get medieval. make a piece or suit of amor. You can decorate them using paint or henna, or even make a hand shadow. You might need a friend to lend you a hand (couldn t resist!) - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 35) Use a skyline of your hometown or another interesting city as inspiration today 36) Work with Newspaper and make the biggest thing you can. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 37) Make a family crest for your own family. If you already have one, make one for a friends family or even a fictional one. 38) Build a puppet (sock puppet, paper-bag puppet, marionette, stick puppet, shadow puppets, etc) Bonus: Create a performance with the puppet - could get friends to help. - take a photograph and print it to put into your. 39) Write a ten word fantasy story.
