PAGE 3 of 6 1. Using the pattern sheets trace the outline of each of the applique shapes onto the dull side of freezer paper leaving a small space between each. Cut these out roughly leaving a small edge around all of the shapes. Iron these templates shiny side down onto the correct coloured wool and then carefully cut the shapes out on the drawn line. Leave the freezer paper on the shapes at this stage as it acts as a stabilizer. Cutting the bag shape 2. Take both of the 16½ wool squares and lay them wrong sides together on top of each other. On the top edge measure in 2½ from both sides and mark this point with a white marking pencil, measure down 10 from the top corners down both sides and then mark these points with the pencil. Line a ruler up between both points and cut the top corners off the squares giving the top of the squares a wedge shape. 3. Using the curved outline on Pattern Sheet 1 make a right and left facing template by tracing this line on to the freezer paper. Iron these templates down onto the straight edges of the bottom corners then cut around the curved line linking up the straight edge at the bottom with the narrowed edge at the sides. Follow these steps to cut the two 16½ cotton squares into the bag shapes for the lining. Appliqué 4. Take one of the wool bag shapes for the appliqué background. To help with appliqué placement fold the background in half side to side and mark the centre at the top and bottom, draw a line between both points. Refer to the appliqué layout on PAGE 4 for the placement of the shapes. 5. Leaf 9 is positioned first, leaving the freezer paper in place and position the leaf about 2 from the bottom of the background with the leaf curving from the bottom up to the top, mark a spot on the background where the top and the bottom of the leaf should sit. 6. Use a white pencil to mark curved lines for the stems, draw a long line that will flow from the top of Leaf 9 around and up to the top right hand side then draw a line curving off and down on the right side and one curving up to the left hand side. 7. Take your previously cut ¼ strip and cut it into one 20 long segment and two 6 long segments. 8. Turn Leaf 9 over and run a glue stick all over the back of the shape and the press this glue side down onto the background lining up its top and bottom on the marks you made previously then peel the freezer paper away. 9. Take one of the 6 long strips and run a glue stick down the length of the strip and then press this glue side down onto the curving drawn line and press down firmly making sure the strip is smoothed into a nice curve. Add the other short strip in the same manner. 10. Add glue to the 20 strip and then press this into place down the long drawn curved line, it should start at the top and flow around and over the top of Leaf 9 covering the ends of the two short strips. 11. Take Flower 1A and add glue to the wrong side and then press this glue side down covering the top end of the short left hand stem, peel the freezer paper away. Take Flower 1B and glue this to the centre of 1A. 12. Following the appliqué layout keep positioning the shapes on the background layering the flowers from the bottom up and adding the leaves at the side of the stems peeling away the freezer paper as you go. 13. Once you are happy with all of the placement add paper stapes into the appliqué every two inches or so to help hold everything in place whilst you stitch it down. 14. Using blanket stitch and embroidery threads in matching wool colours stitch around all shapes, removing the staples as you go. Sewing the bag together 15. Take the 3½ strip for the shoulder strap and fold it in half right sides together and sew a ¼ seam down the long edge, turn this tube right side out and press the shoulder strap flat. 16. Take the two outside bag pieces and place them right sides together lining up the edges well and sew a ¼ seam from the top of one side around the bottom and up to the top of the other side. 17. Sew the two cotton lining pieces together in the same manner but leave an opening in the bottom about 5 long. 18. Turn the wool pieces right side out. 19. Pin the shoulder strap to the right sides of the wool pieces at the top centring them over the side seams. 20. Place the outer bag inside the cotton lining pieces right sides together and line up the side seams and pin around the top making sure that the shoulder strap is tucked in between the two layers. Sew a ¼ seam right around the top. Turn the bag right side out through the opening and slip stitch the opening closed. Smooth the lining down inside the bag and press the edges well. continued
