Cut 4-1⅞ ʺ strips, subcut 16 ʺ. Cut 16-1 ʺ strips, subcut 8 at 24 ʺ, subcut 27 ʺ. Cut 4-1⅞ ʺ strips, subcut 20 ʺ. Cut 2-5 ʺ strips, subcut 12 of Template B. Cut 8-1 ʺ strips, subcut 28 ʺ, subcut 31 ʺ. Cut 2-5 ʺ strips, subcut 12 of Template B. Cut 8-1 ʺ strips, subcut 28 ʺ, subcut 31 ʺ B Cut 8 1⅞ ʺ strips, subcut 23 ʺ. Cut 6 2 ʺ strips (binding). Cut 3 ¾ yd in half width of fabric (backing). Also required 9 ʺ strip of Velcro. Freezer paper for center skirt template. 2

3 Sewing Directions Create 8 log cabin style blocks Cut out templates A and B. Attach 2 pieces of template A with tape or glue stick along marked line. 1. To create the log cabin center: sew a B template to each short side of an A template. For the Dog Tree Skirt make 4 center triangles using (1) 22669B and (3) 22673B Template B triangles. Make 4 center triangles using (1) 22669G and (3) Template B triangles. Press seam toward the A template. See templates for placements. This is the Center Triangle. For the Cat Tree Skirt make 4 center triangles using (1) 22670B and (3) Template B triangles. Make 4 center triangles using (1) 22670G and (3) Template B triangles. Press seam toward the A template. See templates for placements. This is the Center Triangle, measuring 15 ¾ ʺ height and 12 ¼ ʺ across the bottom. 2. Begin the log cabin construction. Note: When sewing the strips, leave a tail approximately ⅓ ʺ at the bottom side corners for the side seams, and center the bottom strip to the bottom of the triangle. a. Lay out the Center triangle with the top sharp pointing away from you up. Sew a 1 ʺ x 19 ʺ strip to the left side, flip and press. Trim edge to shape. Continue in a counter-clockwise direction, sewing a 1⅞ ʺ x 16 ʺ strip on the bottom, and finally the 1 ʺ x 22 ʺ strip on the right side. Trim edges to shape. b. Round 2: Starting with block in same orientation as in step a, sew a 1 ʺ x 24 ʺ strip to the left side, flip, press and trim. Continue in a counterclockwise direction, sewing a 1⅞ ʺ x 20 ʺ strip across the bottom, and finally a 1 ʺ x 27 ʺ strip to the right side, press. c. Round 3: Starting with same block orientation use the matching strip as the color to the log cabin center triangle (outer triangles of center triangle) and color sew a 1 ʺ x 28 ʺ strip to the left side. Flip, press and trim. Continue in a counterclockwise direction, sewing 22674B 1⅞ ʺ x 23 ʺ strip to the bottom, and finally, sew the remaining 1 ʺ x 31 ʺ strip to the right side. Flip and press. Unfinished triangle block size is 28 ¼ ʺ center height and 23 ʺ bottom width. Putting It All Together 1. Lay out the 8 triangle blocks to form the octagonal tree skirt shape taking care to alternate block colorings. Sew side seams together, block to block, leaving one seam unsewn for tree skirt opening, press seams open. 2. Lay out the tree skirt right side up over a piece of batting, safety pin for stability and stitch-in-the-ditch quilt along all seam lines. Once quilted, trim batting on all sides of skirt. 3. Make a 6 inch circle template of freezer paper. Iron the template to the center of the octagon on the right side and carefully cut out a hole for the tree. Note: Adjust circle size at this point for a larger opening if desired. 4. Sew the two backing fabric pieces together to form a 67 ʺ x 72 ʺ rectangle, press seam open. 5. Lay out the quilted tree skirt right side up, lay the backing fabric right side down on top on it. Pin the two layers together at all edges. 6. With tree skirt side up, sew all edges in one continuous seam, leaving a 12 ʺ opening on one straight side of the to be left open seam edge. 7. Trim corners to remove bulk and clip tree circle area for a smooth edge, then turn (or pull) tree skirt to the right side through the opening. 8. Press all sewn edges flat, centering the seam on the edge. Tuck raw edges of opening inward and handsew the opening closed. 9. Cut 3 sets of 1 ʺ Velcro at 3 inches and sew to top, center, and bottom of opening edges to form closure. Happy Holidays! 3
