There is an opportunity for design thinking principles to serve as a new lens to shape law firm and law department leaders thinking, while also creating an impetus within organizations to drive change. During this facilitated discussion, we will examine the foundational elements of design thinking in context of a legal environment. Furthermore, we will discuss the importance of incorporating the voice of the customer (VOC), client perspective to help create impetus and drive change. SPEAKERS + FACILITATORS ADAM BILLING Founder Treehouse Innovation Adam Billing is the Founder of Treehouse Innovation, a leading innovation consulting and training company based in London, UK. He is an experienced facilitator, consultant and presenter; specializing in innovation, design thinking, change and cross-boundary collaboration. Adam is a frequent lecturer on executive programs at The University of Cambridge - focusing on innovation, design thinking and change. He has worked closely with the Boards and senior leadership teams of global organizations to define innovation strategy and promote a culture of innovation. He has also led many joint innovation projects with clients in diverse sectors including financial services, FMCG, real estate, software and technology, legal services, healthcare and others. Prior to founding Treehouse Innovation, Adam was a Senior Consultant at Ernst & Young Consulting, and later Capgemini Consulting where he focused on collaborative innovation in the firm s Accelerated Solutions Environment (ASE). He has also facilitated many large-scale collaborative events including innovation sprints, unconferences, and strategy sessions for groups as large as 1200. ALAN BRYAN Senior Associate General Counsel Legal Operations & Outside Counsel Management Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Alan Bryan is Senior Associate General Counsel for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. leading the Office of Outside Counsel Management and Legal Operations, overseeing the company s relationship with all law firms. Mr. Bryan previously managed litigation for the company s more than 5,200 stores. Before joining Walmart, he was a partner with Arkansas s then-largest law firm. Bryan serves in the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, on the board of DirectWomen, and on the NAMWOLF In- House Advisory Council. He has served on the ABA s Diversity & Inclusion 360 Commission, in the Arkansas House of Delegates, and as an officer of the Arkansas Association of Defense Counsel. He is a frequent speaker, panelist, and facilitator for his company, bar organizations, and affinity groups. Mr. Bryan graduated cum laude from the University of Arkansas School of Law, after serving as Managing Editor of the Arkansas Law Review, where he was a Phi Delta Theta International Graduate Fellow and a Pearson Fellow. He previously graduated as a Fulbright Senior Scholar and Phi Delta Theta International Fellow from the University of Arkansas. 9

SPEAKERS + FACILITATORS KEVIN CLEM Managing Director HBR Consulting Kevin serves as managing director and leader of the Law Department Consulting practice for HBR Consulting. Kevin directs large-scale transformation efforts through the alignment of people, processes and technology. With over 17 years of advisory consulting expertise counseling corporate law departments, Kevin collaborates with clients to improve operational efficiency and optimize legal operations. Prior to joining HBR Consulting, Kevin was a founding member and managing director at Huron Consulting Group and a senior consultant at Arthur Andersen. Kevin spent the first 16 years of his life attending American schools overseas; with time in The Hague, Singapore, and Aberdeen, Scotland. He now spends his vacations instilling that love of travel and global cultures galloping the globe with his wife and three young children. ROBERT CRAIG Chief Information Officer Baker Hostetler Bob Craig reports to the Chairman and oversees strategic and emerging technology plans to support the firm s business needs. He is responsible for all aspects of the firm s Information Technology and Information Resources, including Library, Legal Research Services, Litigation Services, IP Services and Practice Services. Bob s primary role is to leverage and protect the firm s knowledge capital as well as create operating efficiencies through the effective use of sophisticated information technology. Bob s entire career of more than 32 years has been in the Information Technology arena with 25 of those years in the legal industry. 10

ADRIAN DAVIS Chief Attorney Development & Knowledge Officer Latham & Watkins Adrian leads the administrative departments of Latham responsible for attorney recruiting, training and development, as well as the firm s knowledge management, library, and litigations services groups. Following graduation from the New York University School of Law in 2001, Adrian joined Latham s San Francisco office as a litigation associate. He practiced litigation for seven years, primarily in the areas of antitrust and securities litigation, and also was extensively involved in Latham s pro bono program. DR. ZEV EIGEN Global Director of Data Analytics Littler Dr. Zev J. Eigen combines his expertise in labor and employment law with his deep experience in complex data analytics and social scientific research to handle three categories of work: (1) predictive analytics using artificial intelligence or machine learning algorithms as applied to HR and related business decisions; (2) statistical analysis and econometric modeling of issues arising out of class actions and pattern and practice matters; and (3) statistical analysis of labor, employment and HR related data. He is a nationally recognized expert in these fields appearing in the media frequently and is a frequent speaker on matters pertaining to workplace data analytics. 11

SPEAKERS + FACILITATORS GINA KASTEL Vice Chair & Chief Operating Partner Faegre Baker Daniels Gina Kastel is vice chair and chief operating partner at Faegre Baker Daniels, where she oversees the firm s day-to-day operations. She has served on FaegreBD s management board and executive committee since 2015, and she previously led the firm s health care group. In her legal practice, Gina has helped a wide range of health care and nonprofit organizations navigate regulatory complexity and manage legal risk. She enjoys helping clients solve problems and takes a pragmatic, business-focused approach to client counseling and advising. JODY ROSEN KNOWER Chief Training & Professional Development Officer Sidley Austin Jody Rosen Knower leads Sidley s firmwide Lawyer Training & Professional Development team and is a certified professional coach. She has nearly 20 years experience working with lawyers and law students in education, career planning, professional development, and talent management. Jody has taught or facilitated programs on writing, negotiation, active listening, networking, feedback, career management, strategic planning, and effective self-presentation, and she frequently moderates panel discussions on career success and satisfaction for lawyers. 12

DEBORAH KNUPP Managing Director GrowthPlay Deborah Knupp has worked globally with CEOs, managing partners and professionals as a coach and business executive for 25 years. She has helped leaders in the legal, accounting and financial services fields align their people and business objectives to create cultures based on the principles of accountability, integrity and authentic relationships. Prior to joining GrowthPlay, Deborah founded Akina, a national consulting, training and coaching firm that helps professionals rethink relationship building to increase sales and organizational effectiveness. Akina spent the last decade as an industry leader in business-development training and coaching for lawyers, successfully training and coaching thousands of attorneys at over 150 law firms worldwide. JANE KOEHL Chief Operating Officer Drinker Biddle & Reath Jane C. Koehl is the Chief Operating Officer of the firm and serves as a key strategic partner to the firm s Executive Leadership. Jane is responsible for the firm s day-to-day operations, which includes oversight of the Administration, Business Development & Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Partner Recruiting and Real Estate functions. Jane brings a unique client perspective to her COO role, having served as Executive VP, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for MemberHealth, Inc., a Medicare Part D insurer, and later as Senior VP, General Counsel and Compliance Officer Part D for Universal American Corp., a Fortune 1000 Medicare insurer. 13

SPEAKERS + FACILITATORS JUANITA LUNA Director, Office of the General Counsel Pacific Gas & Electric Juanita Luna is the Director of Legal Operations in the Office of the General Counsel at Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Key areas of responsibility include oversight of: Strategic Planning, Metrics Development and Performance, Financial Management, Talent Management, Systems Administration and Claims Operations. Prior to joining PG&E in 2012, she was the Executive Director, U.S. & Asia at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. Juanita has previously served in senior operations roles at Bain & Company and Latham & Watkins. Juanita is a graduate of Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and holds an Executive Management Certificate from the Peter F. Drucker Graduate Management Center at Claremont Colleges Graduate School. She has been an instructor of Law Office Management at the University of California at Irvine Extension Program. Juanita is active in community service and is the Chair of the Emeritus Board of Oasis For Girls in San Francisco. In late 2016, Juanita received the In-House Impact Award Legal Department of the Year, awarded by The Recorder, ALM Media Properties LLC. JAMES MAIWURM Chair Emeritus Squire Patton Boggs Jim is a seasoned law firm leader and business and transactional lawyer. During his tenure as chair and global CEO of the legal practice, he led combinations with a 475 lawyer UK / Western European firm, an 80 lawyer Australian firm, and a 300 lawyer US-based firm with offices in the Middle East, as well as other growth initiatives around the world, including Asia. Jim counsels senior management and boards of directors on matters such as corporate governance and disclosure issues, development of acquisition strategies and dealing with financing sources. He also serves on public and private company and non-profit boards and advisory boards. 14

EDUARDO RUIZ MONTOYA Chief of Staff, Vice President & Associate General Counsel Hewlett Packard Enterprise Eduardo Ruiz is Chief of Staff, Vice President, Associate General Counsel at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. He joined HP Spain in June 1996 and during his tenure at HP / HPE has held a number of management positions within the Office of the General Counsel, including the roles of legal director for Iberia (Spain and Portugal) from 2004 to 2010, legal director for Central and Eastern Europe (2008-2010), VP & AGC for Latin America and Canada (2010-2013) and legal VP & AGC for Southern Europe (Italy, France, Spain and Portugal) from 2013 to 2015. Eduardo lives with his wife and three kids in Palo Alto, CA. He was born and raised in Spain, and prior to relocating to Palo Alto he spent his career in Madrid and Sao Paulo, Brazil. LEIGH OLLMAN Co-Director of AkermanX Akerman LLP Leigh Ollman is the co-director of AkermanX, an innovation venture that leverages human-centered design practices to bring fresh thinking and new legal solutions to market. Akerman is recognized by the Financial Times as one of the most forward thinking and socially responsible law firms in North America. Leigh drives the firm s innovation initiatives with a special focus on R&D and social impact. She was instrumental in the launch of the Akerman R&D Council in 2014, creating the legal industry s first research and development co-venture with clients. She also works closely with Akerman s Philanthropic Council to create positive change in the areas of education and youth development by building collaborative partnerships with clients and impact-driven community organizations. 15

SPEAKERS + FACILITATORS RICK PALMORE Senior Counsel Dentons Rick Palmore is a senior counsel at Dentons. With nearly 20 years of experience serving as a general counsel and as a public company director, Rick advises public and private corporations and their leadership suites on risk management and governance issues across practices and industry sectors. From 1996 to 2008, Rick was an executive and counsel at Sara Lee Corporation, where he was general counsel from 1999 to 2008; he ultimately held the titles of executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for the consumer food giant from 2004 to 2008. Rick was executive vice president, general counsel and chief compliance and risk management officer of General Mills Inc. from 2008 to 2015. LAWTON PENN Partner & Head of DWT De Novo Davis Wright Tremaine Lawton Penn is a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, a national full-service firm. After 25 years as a practicing employment lawyer, and holding a number of leadership roles at the firm, she now leads Davis Wright Tremaine s legal solutions design team, DWT De Novo. De Novo is a cross-functional team of legal solutions architects, technologists, and data visualization specialists. DWT De Novo is focused on improving the delivery of legal services by combining excellent legal knowledge with technology, new staffing models, process improvement and data analysis in order to deliver a more comprehensive business solution. DWT De Novo has recently designed and launched a new client-focused alternative staffing program for DWT clients and practice groups. Lawton received her undergraduate degree in economics from Stanford University and her JD from UCLA School of Law. Her favorite job is being a mom to four active daughters, she recently completed the New York City Marathon, and is a Seattle native who loves being outdoors, usually in the rain. 16

TIMOTHY POWERS Managing Partner Haynes & Boone Tim Powers is Haynes and Boone s managing partner. In his role as chief executive, Tim chairs the firm s executive committee and board of directors, and is responsible for developing and implementing the firm s strategy for achieving its goals and growth plans. NICHOLAS QUIL President HBR Consulting Nick serves as president of HBR Consulting and leads operations, practice group strategy and growth initiatives across the firm. Recognized as a thought leader, Nick has over 15 years of experience collaborating with clients on strategic sourcing, procurement and process improvement engagements. Nick regularly conducts industry briefings for law firm leaders to share insights on how developing trends from within corporate law departments are influencing future law firm operations and strategies. SPEAKERS + FACILITATORS NICHOLAS REED Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer Ravel Law Nik Reed is co-founder and COO of Ravel Law. In that role, he currently leads operations, legal and finance, and works closely with the engineering team on product design and structuring legal language. Nik began working on Ravel when it was a research project between the law and computer science departments at Stanford. Through this research, he became passionate about the potential for the application of network analysis, data visualization and machine learning to case law, which eventually led to launching Ravel in 2012. Prior to Ravel, Nik worked as a strategy consultant with a focus on technology and the internet. He started his career at Merrill Lynch working for Henry Blodget covering the internet sector. GREGORY SMITH Chief Executive Officer & Managing Partner Husch Blackwell Greg is Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner of Husch Blackwell and responsible for the daily operation of the firm. He also is a member of the firm s Executive and Partner Boards. A recognized and trusted dealmaker in the real estate industry, Greg has played a critical part in some of the biggest property transactions in the Midwest. A member of the Real Estate, Development & Construction team, Greg counsels public and private clients in all facets of real estate transactions, with particular emphasis on public / private partnerships. He has been active in identifying and structuring public incentives for corporate relocations, commercial real estate developments and public infrastructure projects. ADRIAN DAVIS Chief Attorney Development & Knowledge Officer Latham & Watkins Adrian leads the administrative departments of Latham responsible for attorney recruiting, training and development, as well as the firm s knowledge management, library, and litigations services groups. Following graduation from the New York University School of Law in 2001, Adrian joined Latham s San Francisco office as a litigation associate. He practiced litigation for seven years, primarily in the areas of antitrust and securities litigation, and also was extensively involved in Latham s pro bono program. 19

JUANITA LUNA Director, Office of the General Counsel Pacific Gas & Electric Juanita Luna is the Director of Legal Operations in the Office of the General Counsel at Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Key areas of responsibility include oversight of: Strategic Planning, Metrics Development and Performance, Financial Management, Talent Management, Systems Administration and Claims Operations. Prior to joining PG&E in 2012, she was the Executive Director, U.S. & Asia at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. Juanita has previously served in senior operations roles at Bain & Company and Latham & Watkins. Juanita is a graduate of Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and holds an Executive Management Certificate from the Peter F. Juanita is active in community service and is the Chair of the Emeritus Board of Oasis For Girls in San Francisco. JAMES MAIWURM Chair Emeritus Squire Patton Boggs Jim is a seasoned law firm leader and business and transactional lawyer. During his tenure as chair and global CEO of the legal practice, he led combinations with a 475 lawyer UK / Western European firm, an 80 lawyer Australian firm, and a 300 lawyer US-based firm with offices in the Middle East, as well as other growth initiatives around the world, including Asia. Jim counsels senior management and boards of directors on matters such as corporate governance and disclosure issues, development of acquisition strategies and dealing with financing sources.
