It is said that the Prophet Muhammad PBUH said in a narration, There is no intelligence like planning. We see the wisdom of its meaning directly from the actions of our Beloved PBUH. The best such example comes from how the Prophet PBUH diligently planned his emigration from Makkah to Madinah and was strategic in his approach. The Prophetic model of strategic planning is in direct contradiction to that which is today known as The Cold Turkey Approach. By definition, to do something cold turkey means to stop something suddenly without much preparation or thought. Such a poorly planned approach results in a much lower chance of success. In short we definitely do not want to go into the month of Ramadan ill-prepared or without much thought. As the popular saying goes, Those that fail to plan are the ones that plan to fail. 5
This worksheet will help you get intentional about your month of Ramadan and will follow three steps. All you have to do is go step-by-step and fill out the blanks on this worksheet! Through this worksheet we hope this resource will give you a quick and easy way to get yourself focused on the outcomes and goals you would like to achieve this month of Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak! 6
Step #1 - The Jump To Eid Visioning Exercise The second of the seven habits of Steven Covey s Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People is to begin with the end in mind. The habit of beginning with the end in mind involves setting your own goals and getting clear on the outcomes you want to accomplish. Using Covey s step and in planning for Ramadan, we will start with the literal end in mind: You in attendance of the Eid prayers. Imagine yourself sitting down in the prayer hall of your mosque on the day of Eid. All around you hear your fellow brothers and sisters making takbeerat, Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar. La Illaha Illa Allah. Allahu Akbar Wa Lillahil Hamd. Allahu Akbaru Kabeera. Walhamdulilahi Katheera. Wa subhanallahi Bukratan Wa Aseelah. You join in on the takbeerat yourself and you find yourself getting lost for a moment reflecting back on what a truly special month of Ramadan this has been. 7
You start backwards from the last 10 nights of Ramadan and work your way backwards to the beginning of the month to your very first day of Ramadan. As you work your way backwards from one memory to the next, you notice moments and experiences that truly made this Ramadan special. Take a moment and close your eyes and envision yourself on the day of Eid looking back at your month of Ramadan. What do you notice? What are you doing? With whom are you sharing it with? Who have you become through this Ramadan? What are you thanking Allah SWT for at this moment as you are sitting in the prayer hall on the day of Eid? 8
Below jot down as many of the vivid images that you were able to see. Try to capture these experiences in singular words or short phrases. Look at your answers above, are there any recurring themes that you see? Boil down these experiences into three separate words maximum. Consider these three words to be your mantra for the coming month of Ramadan. 9
Step #2 - Making Your Ramadan Super Special: If you were to make four main changes or priorities this month of Ramadan in line with the spirit of your three words Ramadan mantra that made this Ramadan twice as special as any other Ramadan experience you ve had, what would you do? Commitment #1 Commitment #2 10
Commitment #3 Commitment #4 11
Step #3 - Creating A SMART Action Plan SMART is a mnemonic acronym that is used to create action plans that have a higher chance for success. SMART action plans are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timebound. For each of your 4 commitments, identify 3 SMART actions you would have to take this month of Ramadan to realize these objectives. Go onto the next page to complete this section: 12
