IMPACT REPORT FY2016 EVERY COMMUNITY DESERVES A GREAT LIBRARY

The Charleston Friends of the Library is a non-profit, organization dedicated to promoting our Library as an essential institution of our society. Our volunteer members advocate, educate, and raise funds on behalf of the Library, its patrons, and the larger Charleston county community.

2016 OTRANTO BOOK SALE The Otranto Book Sale was a great success. We raised more than $7,600 and welcomed hundreds of people through the door.

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK CELEBRATION For the first time ever, we celebrated National Library Week by hosting Pop Up Book Sales at multiple Charleston County Public Library branches for the month of April. Our Pop Up Book sales featured a sample of the Friends favorite books at the unbeatable price of $1. Purchases at these Pop Up sales went towards raising funds on behalf of the Charleston County Public Library system. Pop Up Book Sales!!!

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK CELEBRATION BOOKS FOR BEER FUNDRAISER We were acknowledged by: Three articles in the Post in Courier Featured in the Charleston City Paper Appearance on 105.5 the bridge Appearance on Lowcountry Live We welcomed more than 220 people through the door, received hundreds of book donations, and raised nearly $2,000 through our silent auction to go towards supporting the Charleston County Public Library!

LOWCOUNTRY GIVING DAY During Lowcountry Giving Day, we received $4,680 from generous supporters. #LGD16

2016 THAT SUMMER BOOK SALE A Celebration of Life, Literacy and Legacy We held a special sale in tribute of Charleston County Public Librarian, Cynthia Graham Hurd, who was among the nine victims of the tragic shooting at Emanuel A.M.E. During the sale, special bookmarks were given to each patron. That Summer Book Sale, held on June 17th- 20th, was a tremendous success. We welcomed over 800 people through the door, and raised nearly $13,000.

PORGY AND BESS: BOOK SIGNING, PANEL, AND RECEPTION Thursday, June 9th at 5:30pm, we held a reception on the new publication Porgy & Bess: A Charleston Story. The audience sat in on an intriguing discussion about the famous play and its roots in Lowcountry South Carolina.

2016 JOHN S ISLAND BOOK SALE The John's Island Book Sale, held on July 22nd -23rd, was a hit! We welcomed 650 people through the door, and raised over $7,000!

CHARITY TASTING On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, we partnered with the Glass Onion for a Summer Wine Tasting. During the event, guests enjoyed summer wines and gently browsed used books in between sips.

BLACK INK: A CHARLESTON AFRICAN AMERICAN BOOK FESTIVAL Over 25 African-American authors plus hundreds of book club members & readers converged at Burke High School for the 1st annual Black Ink, which took place on September 17, 2016. The event featured a keynote address from Marcus Amaker, Charleston's first poet laureate.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION CELEBRATION On Thursday, September 1 st between 11:00am- 1:00pm, Friends of the Library organized a volunteer appreciation lunch to recognize Jean Meyer for all her hard work and dedication. Lunch was provided by Kickin Chicken.

2016 BANNED BOOKS EVENT On September 28th at 7:00pm at the Avery Research Center, we partnered with ACLU and other local community groups to hold a Community Reading Event in honor of Banned Books Week. CCPL Executive Director, Nicolle Davies, served as one of the featured readers while Steve Hoffius was the moderator.

2016 THAT BIG BOOK SALE Our 2016 That BIG Book Sale event, held on October 14th- 16th, was an essential profit as we raised more than $78,000.

2016 CREATE-A-THON RECIPIENT We were selected as one of the five recipients of the 10th annual CreateAthon. CreateAthon, on Thursday, October 27 th, is a 24-hour, work-around-the-clock creative blitz in which TRIO Solutions provides five local nonprofits with marketing and creative services on a pro bono basis!

PARTNERSHIP WITH THRIFTBOOKS Our new partnership will allow us to provide more support for the Charleston County Public Library system.
