5 Information: Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." I Thessalonians 5:16-18 Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to focus on this commandment. But for the past few months, God has been teaching me to grow beyond just thanking God each November. When thanksgiving becomes a way of life, our entire lives will be changed. Instead of being ruled by our circumstances, we begin seeing God as Sovereign Lord, a provider, and a protector. To help your family and mine begin this life changing process, I have created this ABCJLM Thanksgiving Activity Workbook. Objectives: 1. To place God at the center of the Thanksgiving holiday. 2. For the child to understand how much God has done for us and why He should receive praise. 3. To teach the child various ways to praise God. 4. To create traditions that draws a family together. 5. To impress Christ on the child (Deuteronomy 6:7). Supplies: 1. The ideas and printables included in this Workbook. 2. Supplies for each week s suggested activities. Fill free to supplement with items already available in your home. Instructions: Psalm 100 is one of the most popular chapters for praising God. For this reason, this Workbook centers around memorizing this psalm using a storyboard and actions (A Psalm 100 song by Johnny Larrabee available on YouTube may aid in learning - https://youtu.be/c2twhtb3s7u). Weekly crafts, songs, and activities support the learning. Beginning in Week 3, a Thanksgiving Tree will be created to develop an ongoing list of praises. Because you may not be familiar with the traditional songs used in this Workbook, I have created YouTube videos to allow you to hear each song and see the actions. Links to these videos are provided with each week. Each idea may be exchanged for another that better suits your family and traditions. Also, while written to be used in November, this workbook can be used any time of year. Depending on the age of your child, some of these verses and concepts will be difficult to grasp. That is okay and expected! Remember that you are laying a foundation of truth. Adjust the information to make it age appropriate for your child. 6 Week 1: Introduction Use the following discussion questions to explain Thanksgiving and Psalm 100. Go into more or less depth depending on the child s age. Write the word Thanksgiving on a piece of paper. Ask older children to find the two words creating the compound word. Underline the word Thanks in one color and the word giving in another. We are to give thanks. Discuss to whom we should be giving thanks? [God] Ask Why do we give thanks to God?. [We give thanks to God because He created us and He desires for us to have a relationship with Him. Giving thanks is one way to worship and praise God. Also, a thankful heart sees God in all circumstances whether peaceful or difficult.] Discuss when and where we can give thanks to God. [Ephesians 5:20 says to Give thanks always and for everything. ] Ask How do we show God that we are thankful? [Examples: Prayer, serving others, not always wanting more, taking good care of what we already have.] One way to give thanks to God is to praise Him through memorizing and quoting Scripture. This month, we are going to memorize Psalm 100, a psalm of praise to God. This will help us have a thankful heart. Let s read through the entire chapter. (Read) 1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Explain what you will do each week. [Each week we will learn a new section of Psalm 100. To help us memorize the verses we are going to use pictures and actions.] Memorizing: Shout for joy to the Lord (hands at mouth as if shouting) all the earth (fist, with other hand pull plant out of top of fist) Worship the Lord (praise hands) with gladness (point to smile) Come before Him with joyful songs (wave come) Psalm 100: 1-2 ABCJesusLovesMe.com/JLM Media, LLC For family use or with a License only

7 Song: Praise Him, Praise Him (Traditional) Praise Him, praise Him, All you little children, God is love, God is love. Praise Him, praise Him All you little children, God is love, God is love. Add optional verses: Love Him... Thank Him... Know Him... Serve Him... Crown Him... Hear song and view actions on YouTube - https://youtu.be/pgeeotpwxjk Craft: Musical Instrument - Psalm 100 tells us to shout for joy, worship the Lord, and come before Him with joyful songs. Supplies: Joyful Songs printable, 2 paper plates, dry beans, stapler, hole punch, ribbon, crayons Directions: Color the Joyful Songs printable on the next page. Color, cut out, and glue to the bottom of a paper plate. Set a small number of dry beans on the top of the paper plate. Set the other plate on top (bottom of plate facing upward). Staple around the rim. Hole punch around the rim and string ribbon through the holes to create streamers. Use the instrument as you sing this week s song. Read: Let's Be Thankful A precious book by P.K. Hallinan to discuss the Thanksgiving season. (If needed, substitute with other books on thankfulness.) 13 Week 4 Memorizing: (Continue with vs 1-4) For the Lord is good (thumbs up) and His love endures forever (hands on heart) His faithfulness continues through all generations (rotate hands as if saying "on and on and on") Psalm 100:5 Song: Thank You, Lord (Traditional) Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul Thank You, Lord, for making me whole Thank You, Lord, for giving to me Thy great salvation so rich and free Hear song and view actions on YouTube - https://youtu.be/dsy8_awgj3u Craft: Paper Strip Pumpkin (Original Source Unknown) Supplies: Orange and Green Construction Paper, pencil, scissors, green pipe cleaner, hole punch Directions: Lay horizontally a piece of orange construction paper. Draw 7 vertical lines 1 1/2 apart. Have the child cut the strips a part. Lay the strips in a pile. With a hole punch create holes in the same spot of each strip both at the top and bottom. Thread a green pipe cleaner through the top and bottom holes. Bend the bottom portion of the pipe cleaner to keep the strips on and then rotate the strips to create a round pumpkin. Using green construction paper, cut two green leaves. Punch a hole through the leaves. Thread onto the green pipe cleaner at the top of the pumpkin. Curl the remaining pipe cleaner to create a stem. ABCJesusLovesMe.com/JLM Media, LLC For family use or with a License only

14 Baking: Gratitude Rolls (Original Source Unknown) Open a can of crescent rolls. (For best results use a higher-fat-content roll so the thankful stripes don't stick.) Cut stripes of paper that are approximately 1/2" x 3". With a pencil write or draw a picture of something that you are thankful for. Roll the crescent rolls into triangle shapes. Place one thankful strip into each roll. Loosely wrap the roll into crescent shape. (Tightly rolling will make the paper stick.) Bake according to directions. Allow to cool before breaking open.
