CARDINAL CARTER ACADEMY FOR THE ARTS MUSIC STRINGS Grade 7, 8, 9 AUDITION REQUIREMENT SHEET ARRIVAL: Candidates should arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled audition time. They will sign in and be directed to the appropriate place for their individual warm up. WHAT TO BRING: The candidate should bring their instrument, mouthpiece and reed (we can provide Percussion instruments and a Tuba if needed). Three (3) copies of their solo piece selection, and any missing registration items. ADJUDICATORS: The adjudicating teams consist of teachers and professional artists. Auditions are private. PREPARATON FOR STRINGS AUDITION Candidates will be shown to a practice room by a student volunteer where they may warm up. The student volunteer will also help with tuning. The candidate will then be called into the String room for a ten-minute audition. Candidates will be asked to play a piece of repertoire that best demonstrates their current level as well as one scale of their choice. Candidates will also be asked to sight read and do ear training. For grade 9, String candidates are required to have previous experience playing the violin, viola, cello or bass and be performing at a minimum of RCM grade 2. If you do not play a string instrument you may audition on piano or guitar, but you must begin instruction on a string instrument immediately after a successful audition. For grade 7, String candidates may audition on violin, viola, cello or bass. If the candidate does not play one of these four, they may audition on another instrument (e.g. piano, guitar) to demonstrate their musical ability. If this is the case and they are successful, they will be assessed in September of their grade 7 year and our Strings teachers will assign one of violin, viola, cello or bass and the student will begin on that instrument in September. Please refer to the detailed audition information provided in this package. Refer, specifically, to the information page corresponding to your requested grade of entry.
