The Bart Walker Band, second place finishers at this year's International Blues Challenge will be at ZaZoo's on Friday, June 29 with Mr. Jimmy and the River City Blues Band. That same night singer-songwriter Paul Thorn is at Jim Porter's on Lexington Road. Todd Webster, the manager at Stevie Ray's since 2006, recently left the bar to take a management position with the recently reopened Thunderdome and The Brewery. Stevie Ray's went through many changes under Todd. It went from being a blues only venue to offering all types of music. He started the Stevie Ray's Hall of Fame which benefited the Animal Care Society of Louisville and he continued to bring national blues acts to the bar. He saw Stevie Ray's through some rough times after the recession of 2008. I wish him well in his new endeavor. James Rushing is the new manager at Stevie Ray's. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to working with him. I hope the owners of the bar will strive to return Stevie Ray's to it's rightful place as Louisville's premiere blues bar. And please, get the damn roof fixed. There is nothing more irritating than trying to dance on a floor with mop buckets scattered about the place. Gary 3

Tyrone Cotton to Perform at Coffee Stop During the first life of our Coffee Stop at Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church (1722 Bardstown Rd.), Tyrone Cotton performed several times with various accompanists. He returns again on Sunday, June 24, at 7PM with Stephen Couch. These two guitarists will play an eclectic mix of blues, rock, folk and pop. Besides being an accomplished musician, Tyrone sings in a deep brooding voice filled with emotion. His unique sound blurs the genre lines with original vocals. Tyrone has been a mainstay on the local music scene for decades, performing at Kentucky Homefront and many festivals, plus opening for Johnny Winter and The Blind Boys of Alabama. I invite all of you to attend and enjoy some good music, desserts and fair trade coffee, plus the camaraderie of good friends. Your $5 donation goes to HCM Family and Individual Assistance Program. Keith Clements PLEASE check your MAILING LABEL for your renewal date, and please be sure to keep your membership current. TIME TO RENEW will appear at the top of the label when your membership is expiring. PLEASE NOTE: IT COULD TAKE UP TO A COUPLE OF WEEKS TO GET YOUR NEW CARD. New Music Reviews! Tail Dragger and Bob Corritore Longtime Friends In The Blues Delta Groove Music The first time I saw Tail Dragger was in a smoky blues club on the South Side of Chicago in 1992. His performance featured his trademark Howlin Wolf-style singing, with howls and hoots punctuating his gritty vocals. Most impressive was the way he crawled on the ground, dragging himself along on his knees and elbows, singing the whole while and totally disregarding the cigarette butts and other debris that littered the floor. I thought to myself, My god, this guy is for real! It was one of the most heart-felt and memorable performances I had ever seen. Unfortunately, like most bluesmen, Tail Dragger has had his share of bad luck. In 1993, he shot and killed fellow bluesman Boston Blackie in a dispute. To this day, Tail Dragger claims that he acted in self defense. He spent 17 months in jail. When he emerged, he found himself as popular as ever on Chicago s West and South Sides but never achieved the commercial success of many artists who got their starts performing with him. He has lived the life of a true bluesman and has been a fixture on the club scene since he moved to Chicago in the 1960s. He has sung with just about every Chicago blues artist you can think of. His new album, Longtime Friends in the Blues, was released in March 2012. The album features 10 songs he recorded on Delta Groove Music with his old friend, Bob Corritore of Phoenix, Arizona, on harmonica. Corritore also produced the album and has recorded with blues artists Koko Taylor, Little Milton, Pinetop Perkins, Honeyboy Edwards, Robert Lockwood Jr., and Willie Big Eyes Smith. The legendary Henry Gray plays piano on the album. Gray is one of the few artists lucky enough to have recorded with the Master himself, Howlin Wolf. Other contributing musicians include Kirk Fletcher and Chris James on guitar, Patrick Rynn on bass, and Brian Fahey on drums. Longtime Friends in the Blues is a truly authentic blues album containing classic songs familiar to any fan of the genre. Kirk Fletcher and Chris James do a good job of complimenting Tail Dragger s vocals. The same can be said of Bob Corritore s harmonica playing, which although predictable, does not overwhelm the listener, a common fault of many harp players. All in all, the musicians are competent but not truly inspiring. It s disappointing that Henry Gray s piano playing is barely noticeable on most songs. However, Tail Dragger s singing saves the day. Sincerity oozes out through every note he sings. The overall effect of the album leaves the listener with the impression of a ringside seat at a live blues performance at its sincere, sweaty best. Although many of the songs on Longtime Friends in the Blues have similar chord progressions and tempos, this album works great as part of a blues mix. Standouts include the first song, I m So Worried, and the ninth song, Boogie Woogie Ball. I m So Worried showcases Tail Dragger s unique vocals and ability to wail along with the best Howlin Wolf disciples. Boogie Woogie Ball contains some of the most inspired instrumentals on the album as well as a swinging, easy beat. The album also includes Sugar Mama, Birthday Blues, She s Worryin Me, Cold Outdoors, So Ezee, Through with You, Done Got Old, and Please Mister Jailer. Longtime Friends in the Blues is a true expression of Tail Dragger s style and inspiration. Tail Dragger is the real thing, and his love of the blues is apparent in every song. He puts it best himself by saying, Lowdown blues is all I like, all I feel, and I sing what I feel. I would definitely recommend this album for a genuine taste of good old-fashioned Chicago blues. Buy Longtime Friends in the Blues and make it part of your blues playlist. You won t be disappointed. For more information on Tail Dragger and to listen to audio clips, visit www.deltagroovemusic.com. Shelley Fu Scott Ellison Walkin Through the Fire CDBY I have (and have reviewed) Ellison s Ice Storm, released in 2008. That CD was a pretty good CD showcasing Ellison s guitar and songwriting skills. This release is a different approach by Ellison. The songs are more diverse but his skills are still evident. There is more funk, soul and even reggae music here. I can t say that this is a blues CD since it is all across the board, but nevertheless, has blues themes intertwined in the songs. All of the 15 songs are originals written in part by Ellison. He shines in the guitar department on songs like No Way to Live a bluesy song with excellent guitar fills, and slide guitar on You Talk to Much and Trouble Times. All in all, this CD is pretty good but probably not as original as Ice Storm. Visit www.myspace.com/scottellisonband for more info. Bob Brown 8

Jim Allchin Overclocked Sandy Key Music This CD starts with a rocker, the title track whose title references a computer sped up beyond its intended speed. An appropriate song title for someone who has made his mark in the computer business with the likes of Bill Gates and for a song that is sped up beyond blues into the rock realm. Allchin is a great guitarist who plays some sticky licks on the CD that will catch your interest. Allchin s vocals are probably the weakest point of this CD. Two of the thirteen songs are sung by Keely Whitney, a nice respite from Allchin s seemingly stretched- beyond-its-comfort-range-voice. Fall the sixth track on the CD, is a jazzy instrumental with a little Neal Schon vibe to it. If you want to hear a guitar showcase CD, this one is for you. The songs themselves and vocals are not as memorable as the guitar riffs. If you like rock and/or guitar, pick up this CD. Bob Brown Ursula George I m Drivin Tommytiger Lori Urso's longtime love of the blues is so evident on her recent recording "I'm Drivin'" that it's a wonder she's not a household name. This CD, well recorded and featuring drummer Marty Richards (who also performs on piano here), can almost be described as "perfect." In fact, perhaps it's appropriate to go ahead and use the word. Multiple listens finds absolutely nothing amiss, and everything to like. Urso and Richards, who perform under the band name Ursula George are fundamentally as solid as anyone can possibly get. Produced by the pair, "I'm Drivin'" runs the gamut of blues from a few originals by Richards to covers of tunes by luminaries such as Sippie Wallace, Dave Alvin, Willie Dixon and Jimmy Reed. Urso, who provides sweet but sometimes rough vocals (which are at times channeled through an effects box) and rhythm, lead and slide guitar, has her blues fundamentals down pat; while Richards shows his versatility and performing experience on each and every song. As noted, repertoire is varied. There's the old-time, "cabaret" sound of "A Man for Everyday in the Week," by Hersal Thomas; piano-based blues on Sippie Wallace's "You Got to Know How", to the funky, bonus-track mix of Dave Alvin's "Little Honey," (which is played straight on cut three). Her treatment of Willie Dixon's "You Need (a Whole Lotta) Love," which Led Zeppelin rocked in their heyday, is downright sexy. Urso's slide playing, done on Guild guitars and a 1934 Dobro, is sweet as honey and spot-on. While there might not be much, if any, new ground broken here, what is done is executed to perfection. It's great listening. Urso's voice is positively addictive, Richards' drumming hypnotic, and their treatment of each tune is excellent. Highly recommended.
