GABION SEATING RANGE Ref: S-553-03-19
GABION SEATING RANGE Seating with a solid foundation The term gabion originated in the 16th century, but evidence suggests that gabion baskets were first used during Ancient Egyptian times to protect the banks of the Nile from erosion. Historically made of wicker, in the Medieval period gabions were used as military fortifications, with their lightweight structure enabling easy transportation, and once in position they were filled with locally-dug soil. Although the external skeletons of gabions are now generally made of steel, the same principles of infilling a basket to create a solid mass structure still apply today, with gabions widely used for erosion control measures and land retention purposes. The solid visual presence and textural qualities of gabions have been recognised by designers, and gabions are now widely used as both functional and decorative architectural and landscape features in their own right. Baskets can be filled with imported virgin material, or site surplus / waste materials, offering the opportunity to use materials of local provenance to create site-specific features truly unique to a particular scheme. Furnitubes offers 3 ranges of seating products incorporating gabion baskets, each with a distinctly different application and character. Ref: S-554-02-16 Lapa range Comprising bench platforms with optional add-on backrest, the Lapa range can be retro-fitted to most existing weldmeshtype gabion baskets or to suitable new gabion installations. The seating platform and backrest are in iroko hardwood, supported by galvanised steel bracketry that clamps to the gabion baskets. Elements range Gabion cubes are one of 9 standard support options to the Elements seating range, which is offered in two standard lengths, and with optional add-on features such as backrests and armrests. The seating platform sub-frame is clad in iroko hardwood, which is offered in a number of different size and orientation options. Pergone range Pergone is a backless bench-only seating solution supplied complete with a purpose-made gabion structure for infilling on site with locally-sourced material. The Pergone range can be used as individual stand-alone units or joined to form a continuous run of seating. Bench slats are supplied in a recycled plastics material.
LAPA GABION SEATING RANGE Add-on seating for existing & new gabion walls Long runs of gabion walls provide ideal opportunities for extensive informal seating provision, but without any add-on platforms the sharp edges of a wire gabion exo-skeleton can be uncomfortable at best, and at worst can snag clothing and present a genuine health and safety risk. In such situations the Lapa range - an add-on timber platform clamped to the gabion by a series of galvanised steel brackets - is a practical and cost effective solution to adding comfortable seating provision to an existing or new gabion wall. Bench platforms are available in 3 standard lengths and 2 depths, and a backrest is an optional extra on the deeper model, providing the gabion is of a suitably rigid construction. Armrests are optional extras on 3-slat deep units and anti-skate devices are available on all models. Ref: S-555-04-17 IMPORTANT NOTES: Lapa range seating platforms clamp to the gabion external wire structure only and rely on the rigidity of the gabion for a sound fixing. Gabion rigidity is influenced by the wire material gauge, the mesh pitch, the basket dimensions, the type of fill material and how well it is compacted. Any flexibility in the gabion may be transferred through to the bench or seat platform. Lapa bench platforms can be fitted to most weldmesh type gabion baskets to provide a stable seating surface (wiremesh gabions are too flexible to fix a platform to.) From our field tests we have found the most rigid standard gabion structures to be 5mm weldmesh wires at a 50 x 50mm pitch, which combined with a suitable and well compacted infill, will provide a solid structure onto which the bench platform, with or without a backrest, can be securely clamped. We have found that gabions with 3mm wires at 75mm pitch may be an adequate base structure for a bench platform, but not for a backrest as well. If you are in doubt as to the suitability of your gabion for fixing bench platforms and backrests to we recommend that a Lapa product is tested on typical in-situ gabion walls to ensure that the seating can be made appropriately rigid. For continuous lines of seating we recommend a lateral gap of 100mm minimum between adjacent platforms for ease of access to the underseat brackets and fixings.

LAPA GABION SEATING RANGE Optional armrests Armrests are a valuable aid for less able-bodied people to lower themselves onto or alight from a seat, and are also useful in discouraging anti-social behaviour such as skating and rough sleeping. Standard spacings of armrests will divide the platform into approx 500mm wide seating areas. Armrests are available on 3-slat deep benches and seats, and any suitable number of arms can be used. Central armrest(s) are a popular choice as it leaves the ends of the seating platform free of obstructions, enabling wheelchair users to manoeuvre onto the seat. Armrests are robust folded solid steel bars, generally supplied in the same finish as for other steelwork components used on the rest of the seat. Bench armrest Seat armrest Ref: S-761-01-17
LAPA GABION SEATING RANGE Optional anti-skate Armrests can serve as useful obstructions to skateboarders but might not always be required on a seat. A more discrete and cheaper skate deterrent alone can be provided by dedicated steel blocks fitted to the front platform slat, at spacings to coincide with standard seating positions, and supplied in either mild steel in a galvanised or powder coated finish, or stainless steel if preferred. LAPA GABION SEATING RANGE Case study: Centre for Innovation & Enterprise, Oxford Begbroke Science Park, owned and managed by Oxford University, is located in an attractive rural landscape to the north of the city. The site where science and industry meet comprises offices, workshops and laboratories for applied academic activity, with a flourishing mix of researchers from various science and technology fields working alongside entrepreneurs with associations to investors and multinationals. This vibrant community required more than workspace alone, with new external spaces around the reception and administration buildings providing informal areas to meet and relax. The scheme is a mix of pathways, hard spaces and lawns, with divisions between marked by a series of stone-filled gabion walls. Lapa was the ideal choice to economically convert selected gabions into comfortable seating provision. 15 individual seating units were provided, in various lengths, some as bench-only platforms and others with backrests. The galvanised steelwork to the Lapa perfectly complements the gabion wire cages, and the iroko hardwood slats were supplied with UV protective finish to improve long term performance and enhance its colouration. PERGONE BENCH RANGE Bench design derived from gabion wall range The Pergone bench design is based on the fence / wall products of the same name, using twin horizontal / single vertical wire mesh panels mounted to skeletal end columns. The void between the panels is generally infilled with natural stone or other masonry, which can be a single material or placed in layers of differing materials for added visual interest. At 2700mm long, the standard bench comfortably accommodates 4-5 people, and when used side-by-side (with small connector panels between) Pergone can form a continuous seating wall. The seat itself comprises recycled plastic slats in a brown colour to provide a comfortable and warm-to-touch surface. As well as the bench and the fence / wall products, complimentary planters are also offered in the Pergone range for a coordinated approach to hard landscape materials across a scheme; please see the links below for further details. http://www.furnitubes.com/street-furniture/pergone-fencing-range http://www.furnitubes.com/street-furniture/pergone-planter NOTE: The product shown below is a special dimensional variation to the standard Pergone bench, which is shorter and with a wider seating platform than the standard product. Refer to illustrations opposite for visually accurate representations of the standard product. Ref: S-557-02-16

FILL VOLUME: The under-seat gabion typically requires up to 450kg of fill material, although this will vary according to the material size and weight - the advice of the stone supplier should be sought to ensure the appropriate amount of infill material is supplied.
