Charmed Finished Size 48 x 60 Finshed Block 9 Materials Needed: 3 1/2 yards of the brown floral (8786-9), for blocks and backing 1 1/4 yards of the brown stripe (8792-9) 1 1/4 yards of the pink butterfly (8787-10) 1 yard of the pink print (8788-10) 1/2 yard of the yellow dot (8791-4) 1/3 yard of the pink plaid (8789-10) 1/3 yard of the green flower print (8790-66) 1/4 yard of the green dot (8791-6) 1/8 yard of the yellow print (8788-4) 1/4 yard of fusible web 56 x 68 piece of batting For best results read instructions first. Use 1/4 seams throughout, all measurements include this 1/4 seam allowance. When cutting strips and pieces use a rotary cutter and clear ruler. Cutting: From the brown stripe (8786-9), cut: 5 strips 2 3/4 x 42 4 strips 1 1/4 x 42 2 strips 3 1/8 x 42, from those strips cut: 24 squares 3 1/8, cut once diagonally to make 48 brown stripe triangles. From the pink butterfly (8787-10), cut: 2 strips 3 1/2 x 42 6 strips 5 x 42 for the large outside border From the green dot (8791-6), cut: 1 strip 2 3/4 x 42 12 squares 3 1/8, cut once diagonally to make 24 triangles. From the green flower print (8790-66), cut: 5 strips 1 1/2 x 42 for the small inside border 6 applique circles - see fusible applique instructions From the yellow print (8788-4), cut: 12 applique circles - see fusible applique instructions From the brown floral (8786-9), cut: 6 strips 3 x 42 for the middle border Piecing the strip sets- 1. Make strip set #1 by sewing the following strips in order, as shown. Press towards the brown strips. 1 green dot 2 3/4 x 42 strip 1 pink butterfly 3 1/2 x 42 strip 1 yellow dot 2 3/4 x 42 strip 6 strips 2 1/2 x 42 for binding From the pink print (8788-10), cut: 5 strips 1 1/4 x 42 12 squares 3 1/2 5 strips 2 x 42, from those strips cut: 96 squares 2 6 strips 1 5/8 x 40, from those strips cut: 48 template A shapes as instructed on the template on page #. From the yellow dot (8791-4), cut: 3 strips 2 3/4 x 42 1 strips 3 1/8 x 42, from that strip cut: 12 squares 3 1/8, cut once diagonally to make 24 yellow dot triangles. 2. Repeat step 1 to make strip set #2 using the following strips in the order described. 1 yellow dot 2 3/4 x 42 x strip 1 brown stipe 1 1/4 x 42 strip 1pink butterfly 3 1/2 x 42 strip 1 yellow dot 2 3/4 x 42 strip From the pink plaid (8789-10), cut: 6 squares 3 1/2 3 strips 2 x 42, from those strips cut: 48 squares 2 page 1
3. Cross cut the strip set #1, 3 1/2 wide to make ten 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 strip set #1 units. Repeat with strip set #2 to make seven 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 strip set #2 units. 2. Matching the marked centers sew the pieces from step 1 together as shown. Press toward the pink print. Repeat to make 24 brown and green dot diagonal square units. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using the remainging brown stripe triangles, the remainging pink print template A shapes, and the yellow dot triangles. Make 24 brown and yellow dot diagonal square units. 4. Sew one brown stripe 2 3/4 x 42 strip and one pink print 1 1/4 x 42 strip together, press toward the brown stripe. Repeat to make five of strip set #3. 5. Cross cut each strip set #3, 3 1/2 wide to make a total of 48 strip set #3 units. 4. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each pink plaid 2 square. With right sides together place a square in the yellow dot corner of a strip set #1 unit, as shown. Sew on the drawn line. Trim seam to 1/4 and press toward the pink plaid. Repeat on the other corner of the yellow dot in the same unit, as shown, make 10 units. This is what has been made so far. 10 of strip set #1 units 7 of strip set #2 units 5. Sew one strip set #2 unit and four pink plaid 2 squares together repeating the same instructions described in step 4. Sew two 2 squares to both ends of the strip set, as shown. Sew make 7 units. 48 of strip set #3 units Working on the block- 1. Mark the center of one brown stripe triangle, one pink print template A shape and, one green dot triangle. An easy way to mark the center is to fold the piece in half and press a crease with an iron. 6. Repeat step 4 using the pink print 2 squares and the strip set #3 units, make 48 units. page 2
Applique- 1. For fusible applique follow the fusible web manufacturer s instructions. Trace 18 circles from page 5 onto the smooth side of the fusible web. Cut roughly around traced pieces, then press fusible web onto the wrong side of fabric. Make 12 yellow circles and 6 green flower print circles. Cut circles exactly along traced line. 4. Sew two block units and one middle unit together as shown to make the following blocks. Blocks will measure 9 1/2 square. 2. Remove paper backing and position one yellow circle in the center of one pink print 3 1/2 square. Press the circle onto the square. Repeat with the green circles and pink plaid 3 1/2 squares. make 12 make 6 3. Sew around the edges of circles using a machine blanket or zig zag stitch in a coordinating thread. Piecing the block- 1. Sew two brown and green dot diagonal square units and one strip set #3 unit together as shown. Make 10 of block unit #1. Make 6 blocks with two green dot corners. Make 4 blocks with three green dot corners. press make 10 2. Repeat step 1, also using the brown and yellow dot diagonal square units and make the following block units. Make 2 blocks with four yellow dot corners. make 10 make 4 3. Sew two strip set #3 units and one pink print and yellow appliqued square together as shown. Make 12 middle units. press Assembling the Quilt Top- 1. Referring to the quilt diagram on page 4, arrange and sew the blocks and sashing units into four rows. Press toward the sashing units. 2. Arrange and sew the remaining sashing units and the 3 1/2 squares of pink plaid with green circle into three rows. Press toward the sashing units. 3. Sew the rows together, pressing toward the sashing units. page 3
Charmed Quilt Layout diagram Borders- 1. Sew five green flower 1 1/2 x 42 strips together end to end, using the same technique described in step 1 in the binding instructions. 3. Measure the quilt thorugh the center from side to side, including the borders just added. Cut two green flower strips to fit that measurement. Sew those onto the top an bottom edges of the quilt and press. 2. Measure the quilt top though the center from top to bottom and cut two green flower strips to fit that measurement. Sew those onto the sides of the quilt and press. 4. For the middle border repeat steps 1-3 with the 3 x 42 brown floral strips. page 4 5. For the large outside border repeat steps 1-3 with the 5 x 42 pink butterfly strips.
Finishing the quilt- 1. Prepare the backing by cutting two 42 x 54 pieces. Sewing backing pieces together horizontally, as shown. Make the batting and backing 4-6 larger than the quilt top. 4. At the corner, stop sewing within 1/4 from the edge, lift presser foot, cut thread, and turn quilt (so you are ready to sew down the next side). Fold binding strip up to form a 45 degree angle, then fold the strip down keeping top edge even. Begin sewing 1/4 down from the top. Sew all the way to the next corner and repeat. Trim end of binding leaving 1/4 extra, tuck end so it lays under the beginning end, refer to diagram. 2. Baste,starting in the center working out to the edges, smoothing flat often. Basting should be about 3-4 apart. Quilt as desired. 3. When quilting is finished trim excess batting and backing even with quilt top. Binding- 1. Sew all six 2 1/2 x 40 strips together by placing one strip right side up. Place another strip right side down perpendicular to the first strip. Sew on a 45 degree angle across the two pieces. Trim extra fabric leaving a 1/4 seam allowance. Press. Repeat until all strips are sewn into one piece. 5. Once all sides are sewn, turn binding to the back and sew down by hand using a small whipstitch. Template A cutting- Place the cut out template A shape onto one pink print 1 5/8 x 42 strip, as shown Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut at angled lines. Repeat for all 5 strips cutting a total of 48 template A shapes. 2. Fold the 2 1/2 strip in half to make a 1 1/4 wide strip. Press. Turn in one end and trim extra, leaving a 1/4 seam allowance. 3. Place raw edges of binding even with raw edges of the quilt starting at the center bottom. Start sewing 1/4 away from the beginning of binding strip.
