West Coast Path Association and may be shared with a wide range of other partners. The library is non-commercial and no charge is made for the use of images loaned. 2. Image Standards and information 1 1. Introduction PHOTOGRAPHIC BRIEF 2014 Western Morning News Photo Essay The South West Coast Path is the longest and most popular of the National Trails in England and Wales. It is 630 miles long, starting in Minehead, Somerset and finishing on the shores of Poole Harbour. It is enjoyed by millions of people each year and gives access to some of the most spectacular coastal landscapes in the country. Information about the Coast Path is available at www.southwestcoastpath.com The South West Coast Path Association (SWCPA) is a charity that works to ensure the path is one of the best walks in the world and protects it for all to enjoy. Supporting the charity and adding a voice as a member helps the SWCPA to improve the path and keep the way open to beautiful coastal places. Information about the South West Coast Path Association, please visit www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk We are developing a photographic library to assist with marketing and promotion of the Path. This library currently has gaps in subject matter. We are now offering an opportunity to fill some of these gaps, with the potential for some or all images to appear in local, regional and national press. Images in the photo library are used for promoting and publicising the South West Coast Path by the South West Coast Path Team and the South We are looking for high resolution digital colour images. In the first instance these should be supplied as 6-10 mb jpeg files. We will select the best images to incorporate in our library, which the successful photographer will then supply in the following sizes and formats: 6-10 mb JPEG @ 300dpi 200-400 kb JPEG @ 72dpi Each image is to be supplied with an extended canvas carrying the following information: An identifying name and numerical code Copyright South West Coast Path / Photographer s name The images are to be shared and supplied in a Dropbox folder as two folders each containing images of the same file size. Both landscape and portrait photographs are needed. Around 80% landscape and 20% portrait in total. A total of 20 images are required. Photographs are to be of the highest quality in terms of sharpness, colour balance, contrast and composition. No filters may be used other than neutral density, similar corrective or daylight and polarizing filters. A Word document (in electronic form and on paper) containing the following information about each image must be supplied with the images: location / including grid reference if known. date image taken / subject of image

2 3. Prominent or recognizable individuals or businesses/services In addition, where images are of specific people and/or their or others business/services that are either prominent or recognisable, you should complete a written permission for these pictures. Consent forms for adults and children are supplied at the end of this brief. The completed forms must be cross-referenced to the photographs and returned to the South West Coast Path Team. N.B. If the individual(s) is/are under 18, the consent must be that of the parent or legal carer. Such consent cannot be given by a teacher. 4. Subject matter The subject of this brief is An Insider s Guide to a Day Out on the South West Coast Path. Photography and accompanying essay must be completed and all received by 11 August. Image content Given the overriding need to convey the idea of a day out by the coast, the main subject matter will focus on a particular family / group of friends having a day out, with most images including active individuals, pairs and groups, close ups and wider scenery images. At least 4 images should be close up and/or of the wider landscape without people in the scenes. Some ideas of topics to include are: - glimpses of secret beaches - family fun in the sun, sea and surf, - best loved stop off places to eat and drink, - Walking a dog on the path with the children, - headland views, - wildlife in abundance, - a tired but happy retreat to the car or accommodation for the night all the aspects of going to the Path that makes a story after you ve has a good day out. We are keen for at least some images to include a variety of people using the South West Coast Path. As far as opportunities allow, these should include different levels of ability and mobility, background and ethnic origin. All pictures submitted must be: Taken near the route of the South West Coast Path and at least 5 images to show the Path itself. Shots should have been taken at a public place - preferably on the Coast Path itself, or a public road/right of way, area with legal public access, or with the express permission of the landowner Have the coast, sea or estuary visible (please use your professional judgment if this is not in the best interests of the story you are telling) Essay content To accompany the images we require 400 words that clearly tells the story of a Day Out on the South West Coast Path. The tone should be fun, lively and chatty. It should include place names / establishments and other location information to help the reader. The inclusion of narrative quotes is optional but a mix of personal and general information would be welcome. Refer to the example Western Morning News Photo Essay at: www.southwestcoastpath.com/admin/news/article/152

A separate word document should be uploaded along with images titled Photo Essay. If successful you will work with The South West Coast Path team to edit the essay before it is submitted to the Western Morning News. The South West Coast Path Team will add an introduction to the piece as well as organisational information of around 100 words. Please share your complete Dropbox folders with: swcpteam@devon.gov.uk and emily.stokes@devon.gov.uk 7. Consent forms To ensure that we have the permission of anybody featured (not needed for people in the background) in the photos please can you ask them to complete a photo consent form. This is particularly important for anyone under 18. The forms for adults and children can be found on pages six and seven. 8. Terms and conditions 3 5. Geographical areas The need to portray a day out on the Coast Path takes precedence, but if possible, photos should be taken in the following areas. 6. Copyright Somerset: o Minehead to Porlock Dorset: o Lulworth Cove to Lyme Regis North Devon: o Combe Martin to Bideford South Devon: o Exmouth to Plymouth Cornwall: o Take your pick!! Primary copyright and full usage rights of the photos will be transferred to the South West Coast Path, to enable the South West Coast Path Team and the South West Coast Path Association to use them as they see fit. Proper crediting of South West Coast Path and the photographer is always a condition of use when photos from the South West Coast Path photo library are reproduced. The copyright agreement that will be used is provided on page five for your information. You give your permission for the South West Coast Path (SWCP) Team and the Western Morning News to use the submitted material without charge in print or online. If your photo and copy is used in this way you will be credited as the photographer / author. Unless you specify otherwise, you give permission for the SWCP Team to use your photos and copy in publicity material such as displays, leaflets, magazines, newspaper articles and other publications (produced by third parties) relating to the SWCP. In such cases you will be credited as the photographer. All photographs must be your own work, and you must legally hold the copyright to them. We make no claims on your copyright. The photos must be taken on, or near to the South West Coast Path. To ensure that the photos will reproduce well, a minimum resolution of 1650 x 2100 pixels is required although higher is better. If your camera has a resolution of at least 3 megapixels (Mp), providing the resolution settings are high / best quality, the photos should be fine.

If the people in your photo are recognisable, you must obtain their written consent (forms at end of brief). All entries must be received by midnight on the 11 August. 9. Photographer benefits There is no payment available for this photography. The South West Coast Path library operates on a non-commercial basis. We are offering one photographer the opportunity of fulfilling a current assignment for the Western Morning News where up to 8 of the images received are guaranteed to be used in a photo essay article later in August 2014. We also require the chosen photographer to provide input into the 500 words needed to accompany these images which will be edited along with members of the South West Coast Path team for the final piece to be submitted. 10.
