香港女工商及專業人員聯會 HONG KONG WOMEN PROFESSIONALS & ENTREPRENEURS ASSOCIATION LIMITED President s Report for 2007-2008 Dear Members, On behalf of the Board of Directors, I take pleasure in reporting on the main activities of our Association for the term from September 2007 to September 2008. Thanks to the generous support and contribution from all Members, Committees and the Board, I am pleased to say that we have just concluded another fruitful year highlighted by variety of activities focused on promoting the economic and social well-being of Hong Kong and which also enhanced networking among members. The activities which the HKWPEA organized / co-organized / participated in can be categorized under women business start-up assistance scheme; public seminars; international and local liaison; public relations; public affairs and fellowship events. Membership Our current total number of members stands at 106. Membership continues to be on invitation basis only. The ratio of professionals; senior executives; entrepreneur is 34:46:26. Proudly, our membership span across 23 sectors, including Accounting/Tax Services, Architecture/Interior Design, Art & Culture, Banking/Finance & Investment Services, Communication/Public Affairs, Community Service, Education, Electronics, Environmental Protection, Fashion/Clothing Apparel, Food Services, Government Service, Health Care, Human Resources, Information Technology, Insurance, Legal, Manufacturing, Property, Publishing, Wholesale/Retail and Professional Consultant. Mainland Liaison Beijing and Chengde Trip (22-25 November, 2007) Led by President Carline Mak, a delegation of 19 members and 2 guests participated in the Beijing and Chengde Trip from Nov 22-25 2007. With the assistance of Sun Ya Qing ( 孫阿清 ) and He Hong ( 何虹 ) from the Liaison Office of the Central People s Government in the HKSAR ( 中聯辦 ) in liaising with the various parties in China, the delegation had visited the followings: 1/ All China Women's Federation ( 全國婦聯 ): Chen Xiurong ( 陳秀榕 )(Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat) 2/ Ministry of Commerce( 商務部 ): Chen Jin ( 陳晶 )(Head of Department of Taiwan, Hong Kong & Macau Affairs), Liu Zhenhua ( 劉振華 )(Director), Jiang Shizhu ( 蔣時柱 ) 3/ China Council for the Promotion of International Trade/China Chamber of International Commerce( 貿促會 ): Yu Ping( 于平 )(Vice-Chairman), Han Meiqing ( 韓梅青 ) (Director, Department of International Relations), Priscilla Liu Liping( 劉麗萍 )(Taiwan, Hongkong and Macau Affairs Division, Department of International Relations), Cao Jing( 曹晶 )(Legal Counsel Office, Legal Affairs Department) 4/ The Office of the Government of the HK SAR of the PRC in Beijing ( 香港駐京辦 ): Thomas Tso ( 曹萬泰 ) (Director) and Erick Tsang 曾國衛 (Principal Immigration Officer) The delegation also visited Chengde, the summer palace of the Qing Dynasty. Ministry of Commerce Chen Jin ( 陳晶 ), Head of Department of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau Affairs, Kin Zhenhua ( 劉振華 ) and Jiang Shizhu ( 蔣時柱 ) discussed various topics regarding commerce and business issues with the delegation. The delegation was received by Thomas Tso ( 曹萬泰 ), Director of the Office of the Government of the HK SAR of the PRC in Beijing. The delegation visited the summer palace of the Qing Dynasty at Chengde. Legal Christine Koo reported to the meeting of the progress of the establishment of HKWEPA Charitable Foundation Limited. The draft of the Memorandum & Articles of the Company is now completed. It has been submitted to Inland Revenue Department for review on 15 August 2007. We expect a feed back from IRD by 15 November 2007 and by then we should submit our Business Plan of the Company in order for the Company to be approved as a charitable organization. Media / Public Relations Media Partners for the Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award 2008 are Hong Kong Economic Times, Cosmopolitan and Yazhou Zhoukan the latter signifies our reach beyond Hong Kong. Recruitment advertisement for nomination of the Award candidates was published in March and April. A Supplement on the Award and HKWPEA was published by Hong Kong Economic Times as well. The Award Press Conference and the Award Presentation Dinner was held on July 2 and July 8, 2008 respectively at the Marriott Hotel. Both events received most encouraging media coverage with a total of 31 clippings, amounting to HK$1,330,050 advertising value (exclude TV). - Sing Tao Daily - Ming Pao News - Apple Daily - Hong Kong Daily News - Metro Hong Kong The Award had spinned off quite a few post-event PR opportunities. President Caroline Mak was interviewed the Standard (Money Profile Section) and the RTHK Radio 2 programme "Made in Hong Kong" on August 20, 2008, together with one of our OWA Awardees, Ms. Deborah Wan. This radio interview was organized by the Equal Opportunities Commission. In addition, Sing Tao Daily also had coverage on two of our award winners Prof. Karen Lam and Prof. Vivian Yam, on their August Supplement ( 名人雜誌 ). Public Affairs Public Affairs Committee takes on the task to review and assess the current issues in Hong Kong and to respond the Government on various policy issues. The Committee was pleased to organize a few discussion groups, with Ms. Sandra Lee 李淑儀, Permanent Secretary for Health, Food and Health Bureau 食物及衛生局常任秘書 ( 衛生 ) attending one to speak on the Health Care Reform. We also supported and attended the Health Care Reform Forum organized by Federation of Women in May. With the concerted efforts by the committee, two consultation papers were completed and submitted to the Hong Kong SAR Government. 1. The Response Paper to the Financial Secretary on 2008-2009 Budget and the 2007-2008 Policy Address by the Chief Executive, and 2. The Consultation Paper to the Secretary for Food and Health, Food and Health Bureau on Health Care Reform. Above reports are available at the Association website: www.hkwpea.org. Acknowledgement I wish to take the opportunity to thank both President Caroline Mak and Ms. Marina Wong, Chartered President for their valuable support and participation. In particular, Angela To had been instrumental to ensure that the Public Affairs Committee continued its great effort to provide a platform to the members to voice their stance on various public issues and to convey the members feedbacks to the Government. complete the two consultation papers, Mabel Mak, Cissy Yu, Agnes Koon, Sandra Mak, Helen Kan, Rebecca Choy, Lucy Kwan, Vivian Lee, Ann Chan, Annette Chan, Ivy Tong, Anne Marie Francesco, Vera Waters, Mary Lam, Lee Yeung Yat Fan, Myra Siu, Marina Wong and Caroline Mak joined the discussion. International & Local Liaison Lilianna Au represented the Association in attending the seminar organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Women regarding the subject of Public Consultation on the Green Paper on Constitutional Development. HKWPEA would also consider presenting a stance to the paper through a consultative forum. President Caroline, Agnes Koon, Angela To and Rebecca Choy attended the forum on Women in Leadership organized by the Women s Commission on 8 th March to celebrate the International Women s Day. Women Business Start-up Scheme The Women Business Start-Up Committee implemented a new initiative to help women and others needed. The Committee successfully organized two "Business Applications in Social Enterprise" full-day interactive workshops on 1 March and 17 May 2008, for senior to middle level business managers, agency head or project manager of social enterprises. 40 participants from 21 NGOs as well as Social Welfare Department attended and gave very positive feedback on the usefulness and quality of the speakers and contents of the workshop. Business Applications in Social Enterprise Workshop 17 May 2008, Saturday 香港女工商及專業人員聯會 Hong Kong Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs Association Limited 香港女工商及專業人員聯會 Hong Kong Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs Association Limited Group photo of 17 May 2008 workshop participants, speakers and organizer (WBSU Committee members) at Hong Kong Baptist University The open sharing of insights on practical business best practices to enhance the profitability and sustainability of a business by six seasoned business executives, entrepreneurs and professionals, namely Ms Caroline Mak (HKWPEA President), Mrs Eva Cheng (HKWPEA Immediate Past President), Ms Christina Cheung (HKWPEA member), Mrs Rosa Hung (HKWPEA member), Mr Yeung Ka Sing (Chairman of the Hong Kong Housing Society) and Mr Michael Cheng (PricewaterhouseCoopers Partner) unquestionably differentiated HKWPEA brand workshop from other theory or skill-based workshops. Thanks to Hong Kong Baptist University for waiving the room rental charge, and nominal fees collected from participants were almost sufficient to cover the workshop and F&B costs. At 2 July 2008 HKWPEA Board Meeting, the Committee s proposal for HKWPEA to be a co-organizer in Social Enterprise Summit, organized by The Hong Kong Policy Research Institute and which will be part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week 2008 to be held in the week of November 17-23, 2008, was approved. HKWPEA will play two parts. First, HKWPEA will organize a best practice sharing event in the form of a Gallery Walk with stories of current operating social enterprises in Hong Kong. Second, HKWPEA will be a member participant of the Research Committee, which is responsible for a research project aimed at shedding light on the progress of the social enterprise initiative in Hong Kong. Work is currently in good progress. Committee Chair Grace Tse wishes to express her heartfelt thank to President Caroline Mak, and committee members Marina Wong, Selina Cheng, Vivienne Luk, Jessie Yu, Sophia Kao and Katherine Yau for their support, guidance and devotion of much personal time to work together to make the new initiatives a reality. Services In January this year, we jointly organized a seminar with the EMBA of Chinese University, supported by Amway. The topic of the seminar was Future Developments of China Economy : Opportunities and Challenges 中國經濟未來發展 : 機遇與挑戰 featuring speaker Professor Hai Wen ( 海聞教授 ). Prof. Hai is a renowned economist. He is Professor of Economics at the prestigious Beijing University; Deputy Director, China Center for Economic Research and Vice President, Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School of Business and Director of the Research Center for Direct Selling. The seminar was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It was very well attended by over 400 attendants, including our members, students from the Chinese University, Amway associates and the general public. Prof. Hai s talk was well received by the audience who showed great interest in the topic as seen during the lively Q & A session. This year, the Board decided that our signature event Successful women Tell their Stories would adopt a fresh perspective. After a series of brainstorming, we decided to go for the Family Friendly direction in this year s seminar where we would collaborate with the HKU Family Institute.Preparation meeting had already been held in late August with Mrs. Patricia Chu ( 朱楊珀瑜 ) of the HKU Family Institute to discuss the approach to the seminar. Guest speakers could include government officials to address the government policy; corporate HR executives or representative from IHRM to cover family friendly working environment; representatives of PTA to cover views from parents. The event was planned to take place around November. Lastly, the Services Committee also prepared the Business Plan for the Charitable Foundation in conjunction with the Legal Committee. Outstanding Women Award 2008 The Awardees I am pleased to report that the work of the Committee completed its work in July with the presentation of the Award to six outstanding women. Members of the Committee included: Agnes Koon, Angel Hon, Angela To, Caroline Mak, Ella Cheong, Eva Cheng, Katherine Yau, Marina Wong and Loretta Pang (chair). Under the OWA Organizing Committee, several sub-committees were formed. The initial members were: Panel of Judges Coordination Marina Wong, Ella Cheong Publication Katherine Yau Promotion and Public Relations Angel Hon, Sylvia Lee Nomination Agnes Koon, Angela To Selection Eva Cheng, Loretta Pang Award Presentation Dinner Caroline Mak, Angel Hon, Grace Tse Other members were recruited as preparations proceeded along. They include: for Nomination: Anne Marie Francesco, Christine Koo, Janice Tsang, Chiang Mei Mei, Vera Waters, Helen Kan, Winnie Tang, Rebecca Choy, Rhoda Liu and Wang Yang Zi for Selection: Anne Marie Francesco, Angel Hon, Caroline Mak, Helen Kan, Ivy Tong, Juling Ngai, Marina Wong, Rebecca Choy, Angela To and Agnes Koon for Publication: Angel Hon Helen Kan drafted short bios of all the candidates, and Anne Marie Francesco edited the bios of the 10 finalists for the judging panel, subsequent publicity and publication of the winners. The Presentation Dinner The presentation dinner was held at the J W Marriott Hotel. The response was overwhelming and in the end we had to squeeze in extra tables. Over 200 persons attended, including many guests invited by the awardees. Dr Rosanna Wong was the keynote speaker, and Ms. Guo Li 郭莉 (Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of Central People s Government in HKSAR 中央人民政府駐香港特別行政區聯絡辦公副主任 ) and Ms. Eva Cheng, JP 鄭汝樺 (Secretary for Transport and Housing, HKSAR Government 運輸及房屋局局長 ) presented souvenirs to the judges. Thanks to the cash sponsors of the dinner (Caroline Mak, Janice Tsang, Lee Yeung Yat Fan, Selina Cheng, Estee Lauder) and astute bargaining by Marina Wong, the meal was delicious and within budget. A note of appreciation goes to members of Angel Hon s team, without whom the event would not have been organized so effective and the evening run so smoothly and professionally. Media and Press The Award itself, the winners, and the presentation dinner were all very well reported, thanks again to the untiring efforts of Angel Hon and her team of dedicated staff. Coverage for the Award activities accounted for a total of 31 clippings which were worth HK$1,330,050 in advertising value (excluding TV).
