I m definitely thankful for a busy and productive year in the drilling business this year, and what looks like an even busier year next year. However, I m still getting used to playing golf in shorts in the warm California sunshine as opposed to nearly freezing to death trying to deep fry a turkey while it s snowing sideways back home in Colorado. I d like to thank everyone that came out on October 17 th to hear Tim Kustic, California State Oil and Gas Supervisor with the DOGGR speak about the upcoming hydraulic fracturing regulations. There was some good discussion about what this means to all concerned parties, and I hope industry, government, and stakeholders continue to work together to ensure that the ensuing process ensures safe development of unconventional resources in a transparent and straightforward manner. We have another excellent speaker this month for our meeting on December 5. John Daniel, Director and Co -Head of Oil Service Research with Simmons &Co. will be here to offer a presentation titled Perspectives on North American Oilfield Service Activity.

December 2013 Page 2 For those who have never attended one of John s presentations, I like to think of it as a state of the union of the domestic oilpatch and the major drivers of drilling and completion activity that affect the macro scale of activity. We all know what TAFT stands for, but the activity trends outside the California market impact our activities in the Golden State in a multitude of ways. Again, I d like to thank everyone for their continued support of the AADE and our mission to share technology and practices for the mutual benefit of the drilling industry in Kern County and to cultivate the next generation of drilling professionals. We look forward to seeing you next Thursday the 5th, and until then, keep it on bottom and turning to the right. December 2013 Page 3 Lucky Member of the Month: Zach Birks I was born in the armpit of California also known as Bakersfield. I attended Highland Elementary and on to Standard Middle School. Both of which are part of the Standard School District that all started with the Standard Oil Company donating the land. I attended North High where I played football freshman year and was involved in Ag. Football only lasted one year, during the summer of June 2006 I went work at GeoDril for Robbie Mundorf. There I worked Monday through Friday as a shop hand. I didn t know anything about the oilfields or drilling rigs in general. I got the privilege to learn about drill bits and all the technology that goes into making them. I enjoyed the work environment so much when school started back up I continued working weekends. Once I turned 16 and was able to drive myself I worked for a few hours after school. In 2007 I took the liking of the cowboy way of life and decided to start riding bulls. In 2008 I junior and High school rodeo d. I graduated from North High in 2009 making honor roll all four years while holding my part time job and rodeoing on weekends. College wasn t in the picture after I graduated. All I wanted to do was work and rodeo. I continued working in the shop full time and pro rodeoing. In 2011 I got in a severe bull riding accident and had to give it up. I wanted to pursue a career as a bit peddler as all the old timers would say. In October of 2011 my dream came true. I started calling on rigs, building new relationships and carrying on old ones. I m currently covering half of kern county as a field sales rep. Now I m 22 years old and have been with GeoDril for 7 of those wonderful years. I m blessed with two wonderful parents Dean and Cherri Birks, my two younger sisters Shelby and Amie, and little brother Jake. I have been an AADE member since 2012 and it is an awesome organization. It provides a lot of knowledge for the younger generation like myself that still have a lot to learn.
