Regional News for for October 2009 Mr. Eric Lo Chairman Mr. Denny Mak, Secretary of the Region E-mail: dennymak@ices.org.hk 16 October 2009: A Case Study Benefits of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology for Civil Projects at the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers headquarters. Speaker: Mr. Elvis Li Mr. Li is the VP and Director of The seminar was jointly organized with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. The speaker Mr. Elvis Li Vice President and Director of Tecton Limited, introduced the use of powerful BIM software on many civil engineering projects he has worked for. About 80 participants attended this seminar. Mr. Elvis Li introduced the BIM project background in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo and Mumbai. He also shared some real cases on how BIM & VR technology helps a civil project design team to improve communication and enhance efficiency through evaluating different design alternatives, checking constructability and functionality of the design. There were also some interesting points at the process of generating and managing building/ civil projects data during its life cycle. Typically it uses three-dimensional, realtime, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building/ civil design and construction works. The seminar ended with a question-and-answer session which provided a platform for civil engineering teams to exchange of some practical and special ideas. A full house of participants listening to our speaker, Mr. Elvis Li

Working with BK SURCO, a company registered in Hong Kong to provide training services in Asia-Pacific areas, BK-Surco took the same platform to formally announce its formation. Legislative Councilor Hon Patrick Lau, our Chief Examiner Ian Cowling and Chairman Eric Lo and BK-SURCO Directors Robin Jones and John Battersby gave their speeches about the fruitful achievement of the Chartered Institution as well as the planning and development for the BK SURCO in coming days. Details will be published in the next Civil Engineering Surveyors issue. Heads from the and BK SURCO in the Chartered Launch ICES and BK SURCO offered a toast to all attendants
Chief Examiner visiting Chief Examiner Ian Cowling visited Hong Kong from 26 October to 30 October. He has not been in Hong Kong for a while. Apart from attending the Charter Launch in Hong Kong, he took the opportunities to visit the professors in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for their course accreditation as well as delivering examination training for Examiners. On 29 October 2009, Ian and Hong Kong Committee representatives Andrew Keung, Michael Wong and Jacob Lam visited two core departments of the Faculty of Construction and Land Use of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University: the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) and the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE). Ian discussed with the head of BRE on the possible recognition of undergraduate and post-graduate courses conducted by the Department. This preliminary discussion was fruitful and further work will be processed accordingly. Ian also paid a courtesy visit to LSGI, he commended the Department for the support and cooperation over the years and solicited on-going cooperation between two parties. Review of the existing recognition of LSGI courses was also addressed. In the evening, Ian conducted a training seminar with the examiners. He briefly discussed with two Moderators Alan Cheung and Michael Wong about the workings of the examination process in Hong Kong. After that he delivered Examination Training to our Examiners. This is a mandatory re-fresh programme to the Examiners so that they could be eligible for conducting Corporate Review Interview in Hong Kong. Lastly Ian discussed issues concerning education, professional development, membership or examination; for head office feedback. Ian was delivering his training to the Hong Kong Examiners Coming Events Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Surveying Conference in Beijing was set on 14 to 16 November.
