The WBS/BCX Chair in Digital Business, a first n the cntinent and ne f the first in the wrld, is pised t graduate the first chrt f students in digital business. These individuals will emerge better equipped t rise t, and manage, the challenges f ur cntinent as we experience unprecedented change and develpment particularly in the area f technlgy and artificial intelligence (AI), amng thers. Digital business is the way f the future, but there is much that is still nt understd abut hw mainstream businesses shuld navigate this space, r the impact f digitisatin n ur lives, current and future. I encurage anyne wanting t get the edge in ur digitalised business wrld t find ut mre abut this unique ffering. INTRODUCTION FROM HEAD OF CHAIR There has been much hype arund digitalisatin in the media and elsewhere, but while it is a very real part f ur wrld, and applies t every aspect f business, there is n substantial bdy f knwledge available that is based n slid academic research. In ther wrds, digital business is nt a frmal area f study. But that has nw changed. Thanks t Wits Business Schl and Telkm/BCX, wh have taken the lead, the first ever Chair in Digital Business in Africa was established in 2016. The verarching visin f the Chair is t help Suth African business thrive in the digital era. WHAT IS THE CHAIR IN DIGITAL BUSINESS? The WBS/BCX Chair in Digital Business aims t be a centre f excellence in digital business in Suth Africa and Africa by prducing a range f teaching prgrammes and cnducting structured research, wrking with industry t ensure relevance and applicability. In delivering this missin ur bjectives are: T establish a sufficiently brad, cherent, credible and cntextualised knwledge base fr managing businesses in the emergent digital wrld; T prvide a range f learning prgrammes (qualificatins and certificatins) t share this knwledge base in practical and actinable ways; and T cnduct a structured research prgramme int Digital Business t advance the state f business science in a cntextualised way, wrking with industry t ensure relevance and applicatin. CORE COURSES 1. Business Strategy fr a Digital Wrld This curse cnsists f a selectin f primary and secndary tpics n business strategy in a digital age. It builds n and extends business strategy as histrically taught and practised, and extends this t new business mdels and cncepts, the impact f s-called expnential effects, and cnsideratins f sustainability and the digital divide. 2. Digital Technlgy Fundamentals This curse intrduces candidates t key cncepts arund the technlgies which underpin what is termed the digital revlutin. It prvides a wrking knwledge f the current state f the art, taxnmy f the field; current and future applicatins f these technlgies, and anticipated medium term future develpments. This curse lays an imprtant fundatin fr business peple acrss all spheres f leadership and management wh are expected t lead rganisatins int the future. 3. Marketing fr Digital Business This curse explres the nature f the changing custmer, changing ways f engaging custmers and the implicatins fr marketing in general, and fr digital e-marketing in particular. 4. Digitalising Operatins Management This curse intrduces candidates t the fundamental cncepts and tls t digitalise the peratins f mdern businesses. This includes digital supply chain management; autmatin f industrial prductin; autmatin f prcess industries, and autmatin f knwledge wrk, including rbtic prcess autmatin. 5. Innvatin and Entrepreneurship fr Digital Business This curse is designed t equip the candidate with insight int hw t drive innvatin and entrepreneurship. It explres ways t facilitate and sustain intrapreneurship in larger, mre established cmpanies seeking t transfrm digitally, as well as fr individuals r small enterprise entrepreneurs running innvative tech start-up ventures. 6. Digital Readiness, Transfrmatin and Change Management This curse equips candidates t manage digital transfrmatin in business and gvernment. It asserts that digital transfrmatin as a new business strategy is inevitable and essential, and cunteracts the view that digital transfrmatin and preparedness in the 21st century is purely a technlgy r IT issue, and thus als emphasises the dimensin f creating the right digital culture thrugh change management.

Systems thinking in the Digital Ecnmy This curse prvides candidates with an verview f systems thinking within digital envirnments that requires candidates t see and make cnnectins between slutins, systems and sciety. It prvides candidates with an integrative apprach t systems thinking thery, cmplexity thery, design thinking and systems engineering. 2. Applied Big Data and Analytics This curse intrduces the basic cncepts f big data, methdlgies fr analysing structured and unstructured data, and emphasises the relatinship between data management and business needs. It enables candidates t develp an understanding f big data analysis, adapt t the changing rle f infrmatin sciences and bring slutins t tackle the challenges that arise in mdern business. This curse des nt require candidates t have a strng mathematics r cmputer science backgrund. 3. Cybersecurity and Risk Management The curse prvides candidates with the cncepts and tls fr the strategic deplyment and implementatin f cyber security within an rganisatin. The curse aims t develp strategic thinkers wh understand the cyber threat t an rganisatin/digital business and its resurces, and are able t build and supprt secure systems and practices that supprt the strategic grwth f a business. 4. Digital Financial Services This curse cnsists f a selectin f primary and secndary tpics n the deplyment and adptin f Fintech in Suth Africa, the rest f Africa and selected glbal cmparisns. It assists candidates in learning a taxnmy f Fintech and develping insight int the financial services landscape in Suth Africa, including the unbanked and underbanked segments. 5. Digital Gvernment This curse prvides candidates with applicable knwledge f the use f digital practices t imprve the efficiency and effectiveness f gvernment, and deliver public services t citizens, in the era f the Furth Industrial Revlutin. 6. Digital Cmmerce This curse is designed t equip the candidate with knwledge f the cntext and pprtunities emerging in the area f e-cmmerce in Suth Africa, the cntinent, as well as wrldwide.
RESEARCH REPORT This is the independent study prtin f the curriculum in which all Master s degree candidates must undertake academic research and prduce a mini-thesis. In line with the Chair, the areas f research include Business Management, Ecnmic and Scial Impact, Digital Business Applicatins, Plicy, Law & Ethics f Digital Business and Crprate Gvernance and Business Leadership. First degree and pstgraduate (NQF 8) studies (preferably an Hnurs degree but a gd Bachelr s degree with a recgnised and accredited pstgraduate degree r diplma is als recgnised).
