Random Acts of Kindness It was Monday, February 10, 2014, and President Kathleen Terry started us off with a video of one dog saving another dog from freeway traffic, an homage to Random Acts of Kindness Week. Here s one such act: Dei Murray and Hawthorn Suites donated computers to Dan Saks on behalf of 186th Street School. Here s another: Deb Robertson has been making sure that each of us that s over a hundred people timely receives an anniversary card. And here s another: The Richstone Executive Director came to thank us for our support and specifically for our participation in their tutoring program. (What else does support of Richstone include? Larry Wolf and Dave Peters have been major backers since seemingly forever.) Organized Acts of Kindness On this date we had no speaker, so Acts of Kindness (not so random, to be honest in fact, very well organized) poured forth. Dan Quisenberry and Susan Adams are spearheading Vision to Learn at Moffet School, allowing us to witness the miracle of a failing student getting glasses for the first time and turning into a star student. (February 25 & 27 are dates on which we can pitch in.) We have put $9000 into the kitty and will be collaborating with other Rotary clubs. It turns out, by the way, that Charlie Steinmetz and Lincoln Stone have been working with this program in Watts for many years.

Funding Acts of Kindness How to pay for all these Acts of Kindness? Primarily Magic In Giving, that s how. Dr. Chris pitched for our support in his usual inimitable style, which we ll see more of when he returns to MIG as MC. Jim Lambert, assisted by Jan Rhees, is running the show, and Ian Jackson is seeking sponsorships. Matching Acts of Kindness Steve DeBaets is working with KidSave, bringing abandoned children from Colombia in search of forever homes..larry Johnson is supporting the Niger Water Project and is organizing matching grants through Wells Bring Hope. Our dollars get matched 5X by World Vision and matched still more through RI s Global Grants program.

Random Acts of Fun There are, of course, also Random Acts of Fun. Lisa Hemmat is organizing a March 16 afternoon trip to Shen Yun 2014 in Costa Mesa. Amanda Stone is promoting our club on Facebook, so Like the MB Rotary Club Facebook page and add comments and shares to promote our club. Jordan Peister and John Acker are creating $15 black or gray club t-shirts sign up with John. And John Acker s son entered the District piano competition through the Westchester club and won. Sharing Our Passions President Kathleen called all this Random Acts of Kindness and then called the presentation Sharing Our Passions. Either way, on a day without a formal speaker scheduled, President Kathleen managed to more than fill up our meeting time and to fill up our hearts with displays of passionate kindness performed by our companions and friends our fellow club members. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

The Rotary Foundation s Beginning Please consider making a donation so we can have every Rotarian in our Club be a contributor. Some magnificent projects grow from very small seeds. The Rotary Foundation had that sort of modest beginning. In 1917 RI President Arch Klumph told the delegates to the Atlanta Convention that it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world. The response was polite and favorable, but the fund was slow to materialize. A year later the Rotary Endowment Fund, as it was first labeled, received its first contribution of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, which was the balance of the Kansas City Convention account following the 1918 annual meeting. Additional small amounts were annually contributed, but after six years it is reported that the endowment fund had only reached $700. A decade later, The Rotary Foundation was formally established at the 1928 Minneapolis Convention. In the next four years the Foundation fund grew to $50,000. In 1937 a $2 million goal was announced for The Rotary Foundation, but these plans were cut short and abandoned with the outbreak of World War II. In 1947, upon the death of Paul Harris, a new era opened for the Rotary Foundation as memorial gifts poured in to honor the founder of Rotary. From that time, The Rotary Foundation has been achieving its noble objective of furthering understanding and friendly relations between peoples of different nations. By 1954 the Foundation received for the first time a half million dollars in contributions in a single year, and in 1965 a million dollars was received. It is staggering to imagine that from those humble beginnings, The Rotary Foundation is now receiving more than $85 million each year for educational and humanitarian work around the world.
