Eco Lamp Folio Guide Project Proposal (first page in your Design Folio after the cover page) Statement of Intent Produce a statement that addresses the following. the type of project you are designing (refer to the design brief) describe the reasons for this choice (refer to class notes on LED technology) Exploration of the task (brainstorming) Design limitations Outline the time available and due date Outline any budget constraints. Discuss any design parameters that relate to the project. Intended user Who will use the project? Outline any personal information that may impact upon the design (age, gender, hobbies, interests, cultural background, etc.) Consideration of space Where will the project be used? How much space is available in the intended location? (Provide dimensions.) Describe the intended location (floor coverings, wall coverings, surrounding furniture, style of space, colour schemes etc.) Time Plan Map out your project against the available time. Term 2 Week Folio Project 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Research and Investigation (new page in your Design Folio) Available tools and materials 1. What materials are available in the metal workshop? Take notes when you are in the workshop. 2. What tools are available in the metal workshop? Take notes when you are in the workshop. LED Technology: 1. What does LED stand for? 2. What types of 12 volt LEDs are available? 3. List the advantages of LED lighting. Metals (Complete the table below): Type Description including general applications Advantages Disadvantages Carbon steel Cast iron Aluminum Brass Bronze 4 of 9
Metal joining systems (Complete the table below): Type MIG Weld Description including materials joined Advantages and when this joint is ideal Disadvantages and when you wouldn t use this joint Pop Rivet Bolt and Nut Spot Weld Epoxy Glue Investigation of existing solutions Conduct market research of existing LED desk lamps (minimum of 3). You should comment on features such as: Style Materials Construction techniques Positives Negatives Features that you particularly like Include a picture for each item you research. The following website has examples of past student designs: http://www.designability.com.au/gallery/ecolamp-gallery 5 of 9
Project Realisation (new page in your Design Folio) Idea generation sketches Produce at least 5 sketches of possible designs. Each sketch must: be drawn in class using a 3D drawing board be completed neatly using lead pencil be presented on blank paper (one sketch per A4 page) include approximate dimensions include annotations to indicate materials and features Justification of final design Select your best design and produce a statement (one to two paragraphs) that clearly justifies the reasons for you choice (why have you chosen this design in comparison to your other ideas/designs). Also justify why you have chosen to materials you plan to use in your project. Design criteria table (criteria to evaluate success) Construct a table that outlines the criteria that will be used to evaluate the success of your design project. E.g.: (for a fruit bowl project) Criteria Aesthetics Function Cost Sustainability Analysis The fruit bowl must: - have organic flowing curves - have a highly polished / reflective surface - have a smooth surface with no visible joins (welding mounds, pop rivets etc.) The fruit bowl must: - contain at least 12 apples - not damage the dining table - have handles for easy transportation - be stable Final sketch (perspective projection) Produce a detailed final design sketch in perspective projection. This sketch should be rendered to show tonal graduation, highlights and shadows. Orthogonal plan Produce a set of development plans in orthogonal projection (top, front and side). Show all dimensions. This can be done using CAD software. 6 of 9
Cutting List Create a cutting list for your project. E.g.: Part Name Material Used Quantity Length mm Width mm Total mm Circle Base 19mm Red Cedar 1 200 200 200 Body Aluminium Extrusion 1 600 32 600 Note the Total is the Length multiplied by the Quantity. 3D CAD model Use CAD software to produce a 3D rendered model of your design. Export an image in perspective projection to your folio. Project Management (new page in your Design Folio) Photo Diary Take digital pictures during the construction of your project. Arrange them in sequence with annotations. Final evaluation Does your project fulfill the requirements listed in your Design Criteria Table? What are the positives aspects about your project? What are the negative aspects about your project? How could your product be improved? Did you encounter any problems (constraints) during the development of your project? How well did you manage your time? Were you able to stick to your time plan? Did you learn any new skills during the development of your project? What knowledge of safe working practices have you applied during this project? 7 of 9
