September 2014 Each season has its perks, but none quite like the fall. It s time to relish the crisp, cool weather this time of year brings. It s time to turn off your air conditioners and to open your windows! Let's take a look at the five reasons we are most looking forward to the fall season. 1. Everyone enjoys a nice, sunny summer afternoon, but when temperatures soar to the mid-90s, it s just one miserable experience. Men and women alike can relish in the cooler weather that the fall brings. We don t have to worry about sticking to our clothing, literally, or sweating profusely on the city buses. 2. Everything is just that much prettier in the fall The changing of the leaves creates beautiful scenery as you walk through most any city. 3. The much anticipated season premieres of your favorite television programs are airing in he fall. 4. My birthday, opening on Sundays, Halloween and everything pumpkin flavours not necessarily in that order. 5. The last but not the least your favourite quilt store has the fall calendar up and you can choose all the classes and clubs you were dreaming of during the summer. Thank you so much to everybody who answered our Survey. We had very positive feedback and some very nice suggestions for classes. From the survey we learned, you are not looking for garment classes but accessory classes, so we are planning for bag classes. We will also have new teachers and new classes so consult our calendar on the web at www.therunningstitch.ca regularly otherwise you might miss out. We will be opening on Sunday from noon to 5:00 pm from September to May. Is this exciting or what? To celebrate we will have the Pop a Balloon event on Sunday, September 14. Just come and celebrate with us. Michèle

BERNINA Sewing Centre News Many quilt artists claim that Bernina is the best machine for quilting, particularly free motion stitching. Last month I examined the engineering in Bernina feet. This month why is this machine so special. Of course the feet still ranks right up there, but two other features of the machine itself can set it part the DC motor and the Hopper Mechanism. Every Bernina sewing machine features a DC motor. Why is that important? What is the big deal? The main advantage of a DC motor is consistent feeding of power (or current) They have a stable and consistent current. DC motors have the advantage of being more controllable and offer better needle penetration at slower speeds for positive, powerful control of the needle. The power of a DC motor will make the needle penetrate even the thickest of fabrics. The needle control is fast to the up or down position with no floating. All true computer sewing machines use a step motor to move the needle bar and feed dogs. Different qualities of step motors produce different results. Bernina uses only high quality, high-speed step motors. What does this mean to you? The more steps the motor has, the finer the adjustments available. Check out a tapered satin stitch. Does it look smooth from the

BERNINA Sewing Centre News widest to narrowest width, or does it have a stair-stepped look? Count the number of adjustments available on other machines, and you might be surprised to find how few are available to you. That means limited ability to fine-tune your sewing. Not on a Bernina! A high quality, high-speed brushless DC step motor will have more than 20 adjustment points AND run at full speed even if the width is set at the widest. Hopper mechanism When a sewing machine feeds fabric, the feed dogs pull the fabric through the machine, while the presser foot sits on top of the fabric. The fabric next to the feed dogs will move at a slightly faster rate. In a Bernina, the presser foot hops up slightly to allow the top fabric to feed along at the same rate as the bottom layer. This is called the Bernina Hopper Mechanism. A slight adjustment of presser foot pressure can also be of benefit. No matter which foot you use when free-motion stitching, the basics of the technique remain the same. You have the freedom to create and place stitches exactly where you want! Bernina Free Motion feet are specially designed to work with the hopper mechanism so that the fabric does not travel up the needle (called "flagging"), thus causing distorted stitches. The hopper mechanism ensures the needle and pressure foot are working with you to form beautiful stitches.

BERNINA Sewing Centre News BERNINA Hopper Mechanism is evident when using the Darning Foot/Free Motion, Embroidery Foot & the BSR Foot. When the needle is in the lowest position, the feet will apply pressure to the fabric & when the needle is in the highest position, the feet will lift / hops up slightly to allow the fabric to move with ease. No flagging, no drag. The powerful DC motor and the patented Bernina Hopper Mechanism are available on all Bernina Sewing Machines, including the ones featured in the Fall in Love with Autumn Savings promotion. Oh, and of course the extra hole in the stitch plate (be sure to check out The Running Stitch YouTube video for that explanation; www.youtube.com/watch?v=belaomh5wbc). Other news; The mystery machine is coming! Did you guess what it is? We are expecting them in September. The Fall promotion has started just in time for Sewapalooza. For our current Bernina owners there is the favourite 25% off coupon. Lots going on this fall, come on in and see us :). Happy Stitching, Wendy
