I never understood why August is always the busiest festival month of the year in our area. It's uncomfortably hot and humid. It's weather better suited for growing orchids than it is going to blues festivals. But when the air is thick with moisture and the sweat is dripping from the end of your nose blues music is in abundance around here. The month starts with the Mary Ann Fisher Summer Concert Series in Russellville, KY on Friday, August 5 with Tee Dee Young and the Scandalous Band. Young performed recently at the Louisville Blues-n-Barbecue Festival and was voted the King of Beale Street by the Memphis merchants during the International Blues Challenge in February. Mary Ann Fisher was born in Henderson County but lived a good portion of her life in Louisville. She was awarded the KBS Sylvester Weaver award in 1996 and the Russellville Blues Society decided to name their concert series in her honor. The Cincy Blues Festival is August 5 and 6. The headliners Photo by Cheryl Cissell this year are Big James and the Chicago Playboys and Rick Holmstrom. More info on-line at http:// www.cincybluesfest.org/. This will be the third year for the Capital City Blues Festival in Frankfort. The dates are August 12, 13 and 14 in River View Park. Check out the ad in this issue of Blues News. It's the tenth anniversary of the Ribberfest in Madison, IN and they are doing it up right with a schedule that includes Ronnie Baker Brooks, Sugar Ray & the Bluetones and Buddy Guy. The festival is August 19 and 20 and you can find it on-line at http://www.madisonribberfest. com/. That same weekend our brother blues society to the south is hosting a newgrass festival in Oakland, KY. Sam Bush and Duckbutter headline the third annual festival sponsored by the Kentucky Blues Society in Bowling Green. To round out the month both the Bean Blossom Blues Festival (Bean Blossom, IN) and the Ken Lakes Hot August Blues Festival (Hardin, KY) take place the last weekend of August. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, have your sunscreen handy and check the KBS website at http://kbsblues.org/ for the most current festival information. While checking websites for the monthly calendar I noticed that the Blue River Cafe in Milltown, IN is reopening on July 28. The Cafe, located about 30 miles due west of Louisville, was destroyed by fire on May 10 of last year. They were always a great supporter of live music and it will be good to have them back. Check out their website at http://www. bluerivercafe.com/. Tyrone Cotton will be there on August 26 and 27. The blues society will hold its first solo/duo contest at Zeppelin Cafe on Sunday, August 14. Show time is 4:00 pm. Applications for the contest are still coming in as we go to press but come out that afternoon to find out which act joins the list of past KBS solo/duo winners that includes Jimi V and Screamin' John, Jon Boy Slim and Tyrone Cotton and Danny Kiely. Zeppelin's is located at 1036 E. Burnett Ave in the Germantown neighborhood. Danny Hord is well known to many of the blues musicians and fans around town. I can remember seeing him for the first time when he used to blow his harp at the Longshot Tavern blues jam some years back. He took part in Lamont Gillispie's Harmonica Showdown at the Germantown-Schnitzelburg Blues Festival last year and still comes out occasionally to the Zeppelin Cafe jam but now has to devote a lot of his time to his son Travis. Travis is 17 years old and severely autistic. Danny's wife has to stay home and take care of Travis and the family just gets by on one income. On Sunday, August 21, the Lions Club at Greenbelt Hwy and Terry Rd will host Heroes for Autism A Fundraiser for Travis Williams Hord. Admission is $5.00 and the hours are from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. There will be food, drink, raffles and music. No blues but appearances by The Lonesome Cowboys and 415-E. For one night blues music can take the night off and we can help out one of our own. I hope you will join me there. Gary Letter From the Prez BLUES NEWS 3

New Music Reviews! Rickey Godfrey Nasty Man Serenity Hill Studios 2010 This is Godfrey s fourth solo project. He has been prompted for some time by his friends/fans to record this, a blues CD. He wrote or co-wrote 10 of the 12 tracks on the CD. The music is filled with his telecaster fills, solos, and great keyboard work. In addition to the good musicianship, the clever lyrics are light and humorous. For example, the first cut, I Want Me a Nasty Woman is an appeal to women to embrace their inner nasty selves (as opposed to the high class woman drinking champagne while taking her bubble bath ) because he is a nasty (i.e. down to earth and not pretentious) man. The lyrics in this song are a harbinger of the lyrics to come, as early as the second cut Allergic to Mink. He s got a low maintenance mama who s allergic to mink. The humorous lyrics carry through the CD. The third cut Don t Argue in The Kitchen advises one not to argue where there are too many pots, pans, forks and knives. The fourth song, Heart on Fire slows down and is a more bluesy tune. The titles of the songs alone will draw you to them. For example Don t Get Your Honey Where You Get Your Money, It s a Good Night to Drink, or Help Yourself to Me. Don t let the song titles or humor fool you. The music is actually very good. It moves between blues, soul and rock. Some songs vocals may remind you of Duke Robillard. In addition to some very talented musicians backing Godfrey, Shaun Murphy, who was at the 2010 KBS Birthday party, lends her voice to the music. This CD is not straight-ahead blues, but is a fun filled recording that will please most blues fans. Bob Brown Los Fabulocos Dos Delta Groove Productions DGPCD142 When I received this CD I had no idea what kind of music I was going to hear, but it had an interesting covera four piece band, whose musicians are skeletons. This is their second CD (thus the name Dos ) but I had not heard the first. The musicians include Jesus Cuevas on vocals and accordion, Kid Ramos on guitar, bajo sexton, (a twelve string guitar), baritone guitar, acoustic guitar, slide guitar, and harmony vocals; James Barrios on bass and harmony vocals; and Mike Molina on drums. Kid Ramos is known for his blues guitar prowess, at least by me, on the Mannish Boys releases. The music on the CD is self described as Cali-Mex music but could more accurately be described as rockabilly Mexican zydeco. I can t say that I have heard anything quite like this. I shouldn t be surprised, being on Delta Groove Records, which I have known to publish some pretty unique (and great) music. I am not sure how to review this CD. Some songs are in Spanish and those titles are in Spanish, so I have no idea what they are about. The majority of songs I would classify as Mexican zydeco (I personally did not know there was such a thing), so if you like zydeco and know a little Spanish, this one is for you Bob Brown Anders Osborne American Patchwork Alligator Records Anders Osborne s latest effort, American Patchwork, jumps right into the music with guitar riffing galore and a good lyrical song titled On The Road To Charlie Parker. While I can tell that he has blues influence (who doesn t?), I can not particularly endorse this as a blues CD. Each song takes on a different sounding genre. Echoes of My Sins sounds like Americana folk, while track 3, Got Your Heart, goes totally reggae with him plucking guitar strings tuned reminiscent of steel drum playing. After reading the CD jacket, you take notice that you are dealing with a man that is a patchwork himself, hence all the influences that go into this CD. Hailing from Louisiana, Anders Osborne brought to my mind Cajun gumbo just a mixture of stuff that goes good together. This CD is very sincere in the songwriting capacity and the majority of the songs had common, relatable topics. Osborne has such an eloquent ability that it is poetry to listen to his take on things. Cole Kiser The Morlocks Play Chess popantipop Sounds like Retro-Brit-Invasion of the 60 s. The early Stones, Animals, Kinks, etc. all had this sound. But not really being a fan of punk, I am still glad when musicians pay tribute to their roots. Lots of great songs I say Yeah! Give it a listen! Jim Masterson BLUES NEWS 8
