August 2014 August is Here Hi everybody, I am back from most of my planned trips for the summer. I even included a week of rest in Nova Scotia. The weather was fabulous and I really enjoyed the Annapolis Valley. We were staying in Wolfville in a very charming house. We went to Halifax, of course, but I prefer the quiet of the ocean and nature so we went to Peggy's Cove. We went to Lunenberg for the architecture and Nancy Rink boutique (wow) and Chester (charming little village where we had a Lobster Roll absolutely delicious). We were also very close to Grandpre and we ate at Le Caveau, Domaine de Grand Pre, what a place. We were sitting in the garden, the weather was absolutely perfect and the food, oh my gosh, it was really, really good. I would go back there anytime and recommend it without hesitation. After a week of beautiful weather and fun time it is time to go back and prepare for the months ahead. We have great projects in the making so stay tuned our fall line up will be up by September and we are putting the finishing touches on some items we are sure you will enjoy! See you at the store! BERNINA Sewing Centre News Have you looked at your feet lately? We can learn something from our Fathers. I can remember my Dad saying all the time you need the right tool for the right job. I truly thought he just wanted to buy more toys. Now, I of course know that what he said was absolutely true (don t tell him I said that). I marvel at the engineering in the Bernina Feet. Let s take a look at the various patchwork feet that Bernina offers as an example. BERNINA Patchwork Feet are designed for straight-stitching and are ideal for sewing ¼ or ⅛ seam allowances and top stitching. Six Patchwork Feet are available: #37, #37D, #57, #57D, #97 and #97D. Yes, six. Any foot with a D in its name has the dual feed connection. These feet have flat soles, providing more support to the fabric, particularly at the needle penetration point. There is a narrow groove under the flat sole that serves as a thread channel for smoother piecing. Small needle opening helps prevent the fabric from being pulled down into the feed dogs when stitching narrow seams. Let s take a look at markings on the #37, #37D, #57 and #57D feet. Side edges are exactly ¼" from center needle position. Inner edges of the front of toes are ⅛" from center needle position a great asset when stitching miniature quilts, doll clothes, French seams and other precision techniques. Notches on side of foot indicate needle line and distances ¼" in front of and behind the needle to facilitate turning of 90 and mitered corners. Patchwork Foot with Guide #57/57D differs from Patchwork Foot #37/37D because of a spring-loaded seam guide along the right edges of the 57 feet. The guide ensures perfect ¼" seams and the spring-action allows the guide to move easily over bulky seams. Especially helpful for beginners, this guide also offers extra insurance to experienced piecers.

The all new #97 and #97D is designed for BER- NINA machines that have a maximum stitch width of 9mm. The foot print of the sole fits perfectly with the feeding system for the most accurate feeding and stitching when piecing patchwork blocks on a 9mm BERNINA machine. Included with Patchwork Foot #97/97D, this moveable Patchwork Seam Guide is separate from the foot and is attached to the sewing bed of the machine. Use to aid in sewing perfectly straight ¼" seams and guiding the fabric through to the foot. The sole and toes of the #97 and #97D are different than the previous ones described. Let s take a look at the foot markings for this very specialized foot. The left half of foot front inner toe is ¼" from center needle position, a groove on top of the foot indicates ⅛" from center needle position and the outer side of foot is ⅜" from center needle position. On the right half of foot the front inner toe is ⅛" from center needle position and the front outer side of foot is ¼" from center needle position. Notched into the side of the foot are markings indicating the needle line and distances ¼" in front of and behind the needle. These markings facilitate the turning of 90 corners and of mitered corners. The Straight Stitch Plate is recommended to be used in conjunction with all the Patchwork feet. Use with any type of fabric when a perfect straight stitch is desired. Combined with a BERNINA Patchwork foot, it offers the most control and support of the fabric as the needle enters it to form a stitch. Wow! No wonder quilters love Bernina machines :) The new #97 and #97D for all our 580, 750, 780, 820 and 830 owners should be available starting in September. Make sure to get your name on the waiting the list. Don t forget to assemble the clues in previous newsletters (and this one) for the special Bernina machine coming just in time for Christmas and see other techniques and features on the Blog (trsbernina.blogspot.ca) between newsletters. The Bernina Summer Sale ends on August 5th and the 750 Quilters Edition is on at an incredible price. Well, you need a machine to go with that foot! Happy Stitching until next time, Wendy

WIN 25 FAT QUARTERS GABRIELE S PAINT CHIP PLACEMAT CHALLENGE! Gabriele has an exciting challenge for you to be displayed at The Running Stitch Share the Love Quilt Show. It is called the Paint Chip Challenge. This is a great challenge to try something new or re-create your favourite block on a small project. How does it work? Bring in a twoonie, ($2) stick your hand in the paint bucket and pull out a paint chip colour card and make your placemat. The Rules are Simple: 1. The paint chip colour card must be pinned to the bottom of the quilt when brought in for display. 4. You may piece the placemat with your favourite block, machine or hand applique or combinations of all. It may be traditional, modern or art. This is your placemat after the challenge. 5. The placemat must be completely finished with quilting and binding. 6. Placemats must be returned to The Running Stitch by Tuesday, September 6th, 2014. 7.
