Draw out your letters on fusible (I have reversed the letters for you). Position the words The Twelve Days Of Christmas on the top 14-1/2 x 32-1/2 piece of background, using the color picture for placement. Press the letters in place, stitch around each letter with Size 8 Black Valdani Perle Cotton. Do the same thing for the bottom background, using your initials and the date, if you choose. Sewing: Pair together your light and dark triangles, sew with a 1/4" seam. Press toward the dark. Trim to 2-1/2 square. * A Bloc Loc ruler makes this job so much simpler. Choose 8 half-square triangle units, place right sides together so that a dark triangle is facing the light triangle. Draw a diagonal line on the back. Sew on this line, trim a 1/4" seam allowance and press seams in one direction. The unit will now be a quarter-square triangle unit and will measure 2-1/2 unfinished. Sew together Blocks 1-4, to make a horizontal row, press toward the right. Sew together Blocks 5-8, press toward the left, and Blocks 9-12, press toward the right. Sew the three rows together, press down. This is the center unit and should measure 24-1/2 x 32-1/2 at this point. Add the 14-1/2 x 32-1/2 background with lettering to the top and the 4-1/2 x 32-1/2 background to the bottom of the center block unit. Press toward the background pieces. Looking at the drawing for placement, sew 2 rows of 2-1/2 half-square triangles together using 16 halfsquare triangles. This will be for the top and bottom. Press the seams all in one direction. Sew 2 strips of 2-1/2 half-square triangles together using 21 half-square triangles. This will be for the two sides. Add a quarter-square triangle to each end of the side strips. These two strips will need to be ironed looking at the center unit and changing direction on any half-square that is meeting a seam (this is done so the seams will seat and not add extra bulk). Add the top and bottom half-square strips to the top and bottom of the piece. Press toward the background unit, away from the half-squares. Add the two sides and press away from the half-squares. Sew the 5 2-1/4 binding strips together, on the diagonal to make a long piece of continuous binding. Trim off excess with a 1/4" seam allowance, press the seams open. Press binding in half, wrong sides together to make a double-sided binding (should measure 1-1/8 across). Layer with batting and backing of your choice. Quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing even with the quilt top. Add binding using a ¼ seam. Sew to the front of the quilt, wrap to the back and hand stitch using a coordinating thread. 2019 - Gail Grassel/River s Edge Antiques & Quilt Loft Hayward, WI 54843
