WIRELINE RODS CARE AND HANDLING Drilling companies constantly need to achieve greater depths, while machines are increasingly more powerful and faster. Heat treatment applied to rod ends, enhances their torque and tensile strengths. Steels and machining processes are subject to strict quality controls that guarantee perfect coupling of rods and extend their duration. Joint coupling Remove all dust accumulation in male and female threads. Apply Drill grease to allow proper tightening torque and prevent frictional wear. For a first connection, decouple, clean and lubricate joints. Turn the male end clockwise in the female end, ensuring alignment (threads to the right). Tightening torque preloads the male and female to close the joint, creating a seal to prevent fluid leaking and rod swaying. Poorly applied tightening torque reduces pull back (tensile) or pull down (compression) capacities. In negative and/or deep wells, apply greater tightening torque to keep fluid seal in the joints close to the top of the rod column. Conversely, apply less tightening torque to joints near the end of the column crown or to joints in rod strings in underground drilling of positive wells, to maximize joints pull down capacities. In deviated wells, tightening torque is critical to prevent swaying leading to fatigue failure. Excessive tightening torque also reduces the joint s fatigue strength. Operation Tips Insufficient tightening torque may cause joint or thread breaking in female-male ends, in addition to possible fluid leaking. Apply recommended minimum tightening torque for a secure joint and male/female thread coupling. Excessive tightening torque reduces drilling performance and maximum depth. Joint decoupling Abrupt decoupling reduces thread life. Do not hit rod male ends when decoupling. Lower suspended rod to one inch (approx.) of the female connected to the rod column and manually screw threads. Do not scratch threaded surfaces. This directly affects joint sealability. Check that hoisting plug threads and upper header adapters are not worn out or dusty before connecting them to the rod column. When stacking rods on the mast, place a wooden base or a rubber support surface to protect male connections. This is very important for handling 20 ft (6 m) or longer rods. Do not alternate rods with threaded products of similar appearance from other manufacturers. Do not place the wrench or mandrel in heat treated bands near the joint as it could cause slipping. When tightening rods, keep the wrench at a 90 degree angle from the rod. 90 Use full grip rod wrenches to avoid damaging the rod. Do not drag rod threads on the floor. Do not use cotton gaskets or any type of tape for threads. Thread design allows hermetic leak-proof coupling. Useful life To maximize the life of rods, plan the drilling schedule so that each rod in the column has the same service life. If a rod is kept at the top of the string as a guide, be sure to discard the rod if the male thread is damaged and never use this rod at the pit bottom. Drill rods have "memory". Application of excessive torque, stress or bending to a rod, reduces its capacity. This explains why a rod can withstand one or two difficult cycles and then fail in an easy one. Identification of rods that must be removed Dented rod body may cause core barrel entrapment. The rod s body shows excessive wear as compared to the diameter of a new rod. Bulged box or pin. The thread has cracks or loose material. Border of pin or box thread is dented or has torn borders. Presence of leaks when injecting drilling fluid. Rod has very deformed thread pattern Presence of leaks when injecting drilling fluid. Box with brands deep grip. Cleaning and lubrication Threads should be greased to prevent rust. Do not remove this grease when you use the rod for the first time, unless it is contaminated. Whenever rods are used, clean and lubricate the threads with a 1 ½ to 2 inch brush. Do not use too much lubricant. Use enough grease to ensure covering thread surfaces For maximum performance and to avoid wear by friction, clean threads with grease. If the thread has signs of pollution signs, clean it and dry it before applying a new grease layer. Keep the brush and grease clean. DIAMANTINA CHRISTENSEN 4 DRILL RODS & CASING

Preparation for transport Load rods on three transverse supports and tie them with a chain on end supports. Place plastic protection on threaded ends. Storage Always clean and grease threads of rods male and female ends before storing them. Store the rods horizontally on at least three transverse supports at no less than 12 inches (30 cm) from the ground to keep rods away from moisture and dust. Always place proper protection on threaded ends.
