Thomas Northeast and Elizabeth Barnes The Northeasts of North Tidworth, Wiltshire, England Thomas Northeast and Elizabeth Barnes were both born around 1761. Thomas was born in North Tidworth while Elizabeth was born about five miles away in Collingbourne Kingston. I have not found birth or baptism information for either of them yet but their marriage and death records corroborate birth dates somewhere around 1761 (1,2,3). Wiltshire Map showing Wiltshire, England. Map data 2017 Google By 1801 the population of North Tidworth was only about 240 people, compared to Collinborne Kingston with about 731. Map data 2017 Google Collingbourne Kingston and North Tidworth (North Tidworth, Wiltshire, and South Tidworth, Hampshire, became Tidworth, Wiltshire in 1992) Thomas and Elizabeth were issued a marriage licence bond on July 30, 1782 and were married a week later, on August 8, in Collingborne Kingston. The transcription for the licence shows them both as 21 years of age. According to other information on the transcript, neither of them had been married before. Thomas was a yeoman farmer. The bondsman was John Barnes, yeoman, from Collingborne Kingston. This is quite possibly Elizabeth s father or her brother. (4)

On the transcript of the actual marriage, dated August 8, 1782, the witnesses are listed as Martha Northeast, Ann Barnes, Thomas Gilbert and Thomas Barnes.(5) I have not conclusively determined how each of those people are specifically related to the couple, but they are all relatives in one fashion or another. The Gilberts are also connected and my current working theory is that Thomas Northeast s mother may have been a Gilbert. The first child I have found for Thomas and Elizabeth was Elizabeth Martha Northeast, baptised in 1787. Son Thomas Barnes Northeast followed in 1788. Mary Anne was baptized in 1793 and Rebecca Gilbert was baptized in 1795. Dionysia was baptized in 1797. Thus far, I have not found any other children born to Thomas and Elizabeth but the 5 years between marriage and the birth of their first child, leads me to wonder if there might be a child prior to Elizabeth Martha. There is also potential for another child between Thomas Barnes and Mary Anne. Thomas and Elizabeth lived in North Tidworth following their marriage and all of their children were born there. Thomas died in 1817 and was buried on June 13, 1817 in North Tidworth. (6) Personal picture, J Smart Thomas Northeast, Holy Trinity, North Tidworth, Wiltshire (Just legible enough at the time of the picture to read the name and date.) In Thomas last will and testament he left his farm to son Thomas Barnes to be worked to the end of the lease. He paid a small annuity to Edward Gilbert. He paid an 80 pound a year annuity to his wife Elizabeth during the lease of the farm. At the end of the lease, he wanted a valuation taken place and the resulting amount split in six equal parts between his wife and five children. Prior to that disbursement, he wanted his son to be paid a sum of money for his work on the farm prior to the end of the lease. Thomas Barnes and son-in-law John Banning were named Executors and trustees of his will. The will was proved at London on March 30, 1827 by Thomas and John. (7) Elizabeth lived in North Tidworth until her death in August 1837. She was buried at Holy Trinity on August 10, 1837. (8)

Elizabeth Martha Northeast Banning Thomas and Elizabeth s first born was a daughter named Elizabeth Martha. She was baptized on April 25, 1787 in North Tidworth. (9) On April 27, 1809, in North Tidworth, Elizabeth married John Banning, son of Thomas and Esther Banning. John was a bachelor from St. Dunstan in East London. He was born on December 19, 1779 and baptized on January 18, 1780 in St. John Horseleydown, Bermondsey, Southwark. (10) Elizabeth and John s marriage was witnessed by Elizabeth s brother Thomas and a Mary Barnes, who may well be a cousin or aunt. (11) John had been admitted to the Freedom of the City of London in 1807 as his father Thomas Banning, a Goldsmith, had been granted the Freedom of the City prior to his birth. The Freedom gave him the right to trade in the City and, indeed, John made his living as a wine merchant. (12) John and Elizabeth s son Thomas Banning was born in July 1816 and baptized on August 15, 1816 in the parish of Saint Gabriel Fenchurch, City of London. At the time of his birth the family was living on Fenchurch Street and John was recorded as a merchant. (13) By the time of daughter Elizabeth Martha Banning s birth, on January 3, 1820, the family was living in Hammond Court on Mincing Lane. Elizabeth was baptized on April 27 th in the parish of St. Dunstan in the East, City of London. John at that time was listed as a wine merchant. (14) In the 1841 census, wine merchant John and Elizabeth were still living in Hammond Court. Daughter Elizabeth, at age 20, was still at home with her parents. The family also had two female servants living with them. (15) Thomas was away in Tidworth visiting his uncle Thomas Barnes Northeast and aunt Mary Northeast at the time of the 1841 census. (16) On March 18, 1844, Thomas married Emma Waters in the parish church of Stratford Sub Castle, Wiltshire. Bachelor Thomas was listed as a farmer of full age living in Shipton, while Emma was a spinster of full age living in Stratford. Her father Thomas Waters was a yeoman. (17) In 1844, daughter Elizabeth Martha died at age 24. She was buried in the south yard of St. Dunstan in the East on April 9, 1844. (18) Thomas also died later that year and was buried on November 6 in North Tidworth. His place of death was listed as Snoddington farm in Shipton. He was only 28 years old. (19) Tragically, Emma was pregnant at the time of Thomas death and she gave birth to their only child, daughter Martha Northeast, early in 1845. Martha was baptized in Shipton Bellinger on February 12, 1845. (20) Three years later, on June 26, 1848, Emma married William Pugh, Jr., a broker living in London. They were married in the parish church of St Dunstan in the East and Emma s residence is given as Hammond Court, Mincing Lane. At some point in the intervening three years, she must have moved to London to stay with her in laws. (21) Mother Elizabeth Martha passed away just five years later at age 62 and was also buried at St. Dunstan in the East on October 2, 1849. (22)

John is recorded on the 1851 census as being a 71 year old widower. He is still in Hammond Court with two female servants. (23) John passed away on May 18, 1860 at Sydney-place Clapham Road in Surrey. The probate record for his estate notes his effects were under 200 and the Letters of Administration for his personal estate and effects were granted to his first cousin once removed John Stephen Banning, who was also Guardian to John s granddaughter and only next of kin, Martha Northeast Banning, a minor. His estate suggests that, while he was not extravagantly wealthy, he was able to live a comfortable life. (24) Meanwhile, Emma and William are found in 1851 living with William s father and his sister, Martha Banning, in the Elms in Wallington, Surrey. Emma s daughter Martha is with them, as is William s brother Charles and son William Pugh III, aged 2. William is listed as a colonial broker. (25) By the 1861 census Emma and William are living at Stratford Villa in Croydon, Surrey. William is a sugar broker. Son William is an 11-year-old scholar and they have added nine-year-old Emma and six-year-old Florence to the family. Martha is away at Catherine Lodge School, a girls school established by Mrs. Fields and Miss Lowman in the 1850s. (26, 27) In 1867, on September 18 th, Martha married James Chapman, a 35-year-old farmer living in North Tidworth. His father Robert Stiles Chapman is listed as a gentleman. They married in St. James parish, Croydon. (28) In 1871, Martha and James are living in North Tidworth, where James farm is indicated to be 1500 acres with 30 men and 10 boys in his employment. They are obviously quite prosperous with a couple of domestic servants caring for their house. By 1881, they have moved to Little Chalfield, Wiltshire to a farm of 300 acres employing 8 men and 4 boys. Martha s stepsister Florence is visiting. (29, 30) By 1891, the Chapmans have retired to Alphington, Devon. James died in 1899. Martha and her sister Florence are found living together in Newton Abbot with two servants in 1901. By 1911, the sisters have moved to a 12 room house in Clovercombe, Kingsgate Road in Winchester, Hampshire. They now have need of a sick nurse as well as a couple of general domestic servants. As it happened, Martha passed away shortly after the census was taken on May 21, 1911. Probate for her 5608 estate went to the reverend Humphrey Searle, clerk, and Thomas Augustus Pullen, bank manager. (31, 32, 33, 34) In the meantime, Martha s mother, Emma, was once again a widow by 1871. That year she is found on the census living in Croydon with son William, a mercantile clerk, and daughter Florence. Daughter Emma is away visiting family. In both the 1881 and 1891 censuses, Emma and daughter Emma are found living in Croydon. (35, 36, 37) Emma died on October 10, 1891 at Berkeley Lodge, 32 Upper-Addiscombe Road, Croydon, Surrey. Administration of her 408 estate was granted to her daughter Florence Martha Pugh, spinster. (38)

Thomas Barnes Northeast Thomas and Elizabeth s only son, Thomas Barnes Northeast, was baptised on November 30, 1788. (39) There is not much in the historical record on Thomas Barnes until we pick up his trail in a December 24, 1838, issue of the Hampshire Chronicle (40): Thomas was a long time land agent for Thomas Assheton Smith III, Esq. Smith was an English landowner, Tory politician, and all-round sportsman. After his father s death in 1830 he moved his stable and kennels to Tedworth House. Tedworth House today is a Grade II listed building, operated by Help for Heroes as a recovery centre. It appears that Thomas Northeast worked for Smith up until Smith s passing in 1858. Thomas was reportedly famous for his judgement and experience in the breeding of south-down sheep and, in fact, won many awards for his sheep over the years. (41) In the 1841 Census, Thomas is listed as a 50-year-old farmer living in North Tidworth with his 45- year-old sister Mary. Also with them at that time is their nephew Thomas Banning and a couple of young female servants. (42) Seven years later, on June 14, 1848, Thomas married Mary Gilbert in Collingbourne Kingston. Witnesses were John Smith and Ann Gilbert. Thomas was 60 years old and Mary was about 46. They never had children and by 1851 they are found in North Tidworth with a couple of female servants. (43, 44) By 1861, Thomas is shown as a farmer of 880 acres employing 17 men and 8 boys. Mary is also present along with her 22-year-old niece Martha Gilbert. They have a cook and a housemaid and a visitor, Thomas brother-in-law John Ansted. John had been married to Thomas youngest sister Dionysia, who passed away following the birth of their third child in 1827. It appears that the family connection was still strong. (45) Thomas passed away on November 6, 1862 in North Tidworth. The will was probated on November 28, 1862 with John Ansted and his son, also John Ansted, as executors. At that time his effects were listed as under 12,000. The will was probated again in June 1863 with effects under 14,000 and the executors named as Mary Northeast of Collingbourne in the said County

Widow of the Relict and Charles Petar of Collingbourne aforesaid Gentleman the other executors. His estate would have had purchasing power of about $700,000 in today s Canadian currency. (46, 47) Personal picture, J Smart. Thomas Barnes Northeast, Holy Trinity, North Tidworth, Wiltshire Here resteth the body of Thomas Barnes Northeast In service of Mr. Thomas Assheton Smith. There is more to the inscription but it is nearly impossible to read now. Thomas sister Mary Northeast is also interred here. His wife Mary is also buried here, following her death in North Tidworth at 78 years of age. She was buried April 3, 1880. (48, 49) Mary had been living in a cottage in Collingbourne Ducis with her unmarried nieces Martha and Ann Gilbert since some time after Thomas death. The two women and child are on the 1871 census along with a couple of servants living in a cottage. After her death her Will was proved at the Principal Registry by Martha Gilbert. Her personal estate was under 3000. (50, 51)

Mary Anne Northeast and Rebecca Gilbert Northeast Mary Anne was baptized on February 10, 1793 in North Tidworth. (52) She doesn t appear in the historical record again until the 1841 census where she is found living with her brother Thomas Barnes and her nephew Thomas Banning. (53) By 1851, Mary Anne is living on her own with a servant in a cottage in the parish of Ludgershall, Wiltshire. (54) She died at 66 years of age and was buried on April 13, 1860. Her tombstone indicates she was the sister of Thomas Barnes and it appears she was buried in the same plot Thomas eventually was. (55) Younger sister Rebecca Gilbert Northeast was baptized on March 8, 1795 in North Tidworth. (56) She had a short life, passing away at 25 years of age, and was buried on January 30, 1821 in North Tidworth. Her tomb includes the inscription dau of Thomas & Elizabeth. I have no other knowledge of her life. (57)
