We made so many pillowcases for the Homeless Center. There were over 100 heart pillows for the breast cancer patients turned in last month. Carolyn Davis, our chair for special projects, has several ideas for us to make this month during our meeting. I hope we will have a great turnout to make these projects. Barb Woods makes so many quilts for the McDonald's Children, homeless shelter, pregnancy resource center, etc. She is such an inspiration to all of us. Remember to open My Grove emails for special news about classes that are available to you. See you at our July meeting. Donation Quilt Tickets Program Kay Morris Carolyn Davis, our Special Projects chair, will lead us in our annual Community Service meeting. We will work on masks for children and adults in hospital, pillows to support the arms of people receiving chemotherapy pillows, and an additional project. Also, bring baby shower gifts for the Pregnancy Resource Center. To work on the projects, some people interested in sewing need to bring your sewing machines; others should bring irons and ironing boards, or rotary matts, rulers, and cutters. Also people interested in sewing pillows closed should bring a needle, thread, scissors, and thimble if desired. Carolyn has plenty of fabric for the project, but she needs people to bring stuffing for the pillows. Linda McPike Please remember that I would like to have your Donation Quilt tickets and money turned in at the July Meeting. Our drawing date is August 7th. so please don't forget to turn in your tickets for the Drawing. Also, we really need a Chairperson for the Donation Quilt Travel for 2018 as soon as possible. Please consider Chairing this position. Hospitality I want to thank everyone that has stepped up to bring refreshments this year. I know in the past several people have brought refreshments multiple times during the year and I will try not to ask you to do that this year. It is the hope and desire of the guild that each member will bring something to share at least one time during the calendar year. The refreshments are very much appreciated and we could not have them if it were not for the support of each of you. Show & Tell Ann Hankamer We had 2 members to show their quilts at the June meeting. Debbie Cloy showed a baby quilt that she called Flying Dragon. She made it to give to her God son s baby. Liz Williams showed her Red Work Christmas quilt that she won a blue ribbon with at the HLSR Quilt how. Enjoyed seeing your creations, Ladies! Quilt Show Tracy Williams Page 3 QUILT SHOW Planned for May 2019 Although the Constitution never prohibited women from voting in the past, the passing of the 19th Amendment made the right a standard for women across the country. Ironically, however, women could hold public office the first female member of Congress was elected in 1917 but she couldn't even vote for herself to earn the position. When Representative Jeannette Rankin of Montana became the first woman to serve in Congress, a total of 325 women have served as U.S. Representatives, Delegates, or Senators since then. Quilt Show Committee Preparations The first meeting is planned for January 2018 (date & location TBA). All interested members are invited to attend. Every meeting is a working meeting & there s a lot to decide on, and prepare for. We will need many hands to make our quilt show successful. Take the time to look over the job descriptions in our newsletter each month to figure out where you d like to help. For sake of room, only a few jobs will be listed each month so keep reading the newsletter. This month are the following: Block Challenge cuts designated fabric, chosen by the committee, into fat quarters; prepares rules, sends articles to guild newsletter & announces at guild meetings, presents blocks in a lovely manner at the quilt show, collects block challenge voting slips, announces winners, distribute prizes, and makes quilts from blocks for upcoming auction may get help from Bees. Decorations works with quit show theme to decorate banister, entry way, guild booths, dining area, etc. May use/gather/borrow items from guild members & plants borrowed from local stores. Donation Quilt coordinates quilt travel, distributes tickets to guild members, sells tickets, & keep track of donation quilt ticket income. Graphic Designer working closely with the quilt show chair, prepares a look embodying quilt show theme, to be used on all print materials including postcards, posters, flyers, newspaper ads, guild newsletter ads, etc; designs all publicity oriented print materials. Minutes of the June 2017 Meeting, Baytown Area Quilt Guild Page 4 The June, 2017 Meeting of the Baytown Area Quilt Guild was opened at 7 p.m. President Connie Litteer welcomed everyone; thanked the Hospitality Committee; acknowledged our guests and this month s birthdays. Approval of Minutes from the April BAQG Meeting: Barb Woods moved, Carolyn Davis Jseconded the motion to accept and approve the Minutes as posted in the Newsletter. A vote was taken, all in favor, and the motion carried. Woodlands Quilt Guild present at meeting. The following reports were then heard: Auction, 2017: Elizabeth Walkers reported it was a great success. Linda McPike; Need travel volunteers for donation quilt / ticket sales. All members are expected to pick up their tickets to either sell or buy. Treasurer: Lois Garrett reported a beginning balance for May of $17914.36; income of 7139.00 was reported, Expenses were $435.48 & $!66.05, with an ending balance for May of $23488.99. For expense details see Treasurers report in Newsletter. Door Prizes: Doris Scarborough announced that the 'Guest' winner was Claire Bernard and the Member' winners were BeBe Sarria and Marion Woods. Block of the Month: Delores Ellis; Linda McPike won Junes Monthly blocks and Kay Morgan won the Blocks for May. Next months block is the Shoofly pattern (blue/white). Christmas Blocks: Need blocks for the swap in December. Mini Raffle: Dennis and Kathy Oian: announced the winners of the Mini Raffles were: JoAnn Pitre, Lisa Struthers and Barb Woods. Special Projects: Carolyn Davis, July Special Project face mask and Chemo Therapy Pillows. Show and Tell: 2 individuals brought, described and displayed incredibly wonderful quilts and creations they have made. Block of the Month Delores Ellis Page 5 2019 Quilt Show Entry Deadline December 31, 2018 Calling for quilts made to represent Quilt Show Theme Size dimensions: No smaller than 18 x24 & no larger than 36 x36 Colors: Must include each of these three colors: 1. Purple-Violet, 2. Cheddar-Gold, & 3. White The significance of these colors are that they made up the American Suffrage Flag. The amount of these colors used in your quilt is up to you, as long as these colors are represented in some way or another. Quilt should embody what the Suffrage Movement means to you or how celebrating 100 years of women s right to vote means to you. Possible inspirations: Women s Rights National Historic Park; Barbara Brackman s blogspot Grandmother s Choice ; New York Public Library has suffrage photos in their digital collections; National Women s History Museum; Pinterest; Google images of Women s Suffrage SAVE YOUR COFFEE CANS with lids for our raffle baskets The Suffrage Flag, created by the National Woman's Party, celebrated each state that included a suffrage amendment in their state constitution. The final flag has 36 stars the final number needed to require the suffrage amendment be ratified in the U.S. Constitution. It became the 19th Amendment. It was ratified August 26, 1920. NPS Image
