INTRODUCTION The OKUMA LU7000EX M CNC Turning Center is the latest evolution of Okuma s large 4-axis turning centers. Two turrets offer dramatic improvements in process flexibility and cycle time when compared to single saddle machines. The LU7000EX M has 22 tool stations, 2 independent saddles, four power ranges, large hardened box guideways, a live quill tailstock and the Okuma OSP CNC control system for ease of use. General Construction CONSTRUCTION Machine Component Design and Construction The basic structural elements of the Turning Center are produced from high tensile strength alloyed cast iron that is carefully stress-relieved. All elements are computer designed for exceptional stiffness. The base and bed, cross slide, headstock, tailstock and turret form a balanced, rigid structure. Okuma casting know-how and the toughest quality assurance results in the best machine foundation possible. Bed The 45 degree bed is Integral box-type construction of the Z-axis and Tailstock guideways. All bed way surfaces are induction-hardened on a specially designed Okuma hardening machine to 56 Rockwell C scale. The 26.57 distance across large rectangular ways provides optimum support for the carriage and cross slide. Okuma Box Way technology This is a must to sustain the rigors of turning. Headstock and Spindle Rigidity, accuracy and part finish CONSTRUCTION The Okuma LU7000EX M cast iron headstock houses the spindle and is designed to easily handle the maximum drive capacity. In order to provide the best power and torque configurations the LU7000EX is offered in a total of 9 different spindle configurations. The LU7000EX M has a base mounted VAC electric spindle drive system that employs either an auto shift four gear design to produce large torque values in all ranges for the B08 spindle and two speed VAC motor for the B12 spindle. The headstock is hand scraped to the bed mounting base. The Headstock has a discrete lubrication system with filtration, cooling and interlocks for monitoring correct operation and low reservoir condition. The spindle is supported by three sets of double row cylindrical roller bearings and high-speed dual angular contact ball bearings. A three-point bearing support provides the rigidity and long life for this very accurate spindle. Carriage and Cross Slide CONSTRUCTION Hardened and Ground Surfaces Hand Scraped Surfaces Tailstock High rigidity live quill spindle The hydraulic tailstock has a quill diameter of 7.09 in and a stroke of 13.78 in. The live quill spindle with MT#6 taper, offers extreme rigidity as well as high load capacity. The quill can be actuated under part program command or by the foot pedals. The maximum thrust is 5,845 lbf. Maximum weight between centers is 5,720 lbs. (including chuck weight). Manual positioning of the tailstock body is by a pulse handle tow-along system. To move the tailstock: Loosen the tailstock bed-clamping bolts; align the upper saddle receiver with the tailstock mounted shot pin; engage shot pin; reposition the tailstock using the pulse wheel action of the upper saddle. MECHATRONICS Axis Drives Ball Screws Powerful, robust ball screws generate slideway movement to both axes of the Okuma LU7000EX M. In contrast to general commercial drive systems, the Okuma servomotors precisely match the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the Okuma LU7000EX M. A key element in the drive system is the unique Okuma absolute position, digital feedback encoder connected directly to the shaft of each Okuma axis servo drive motor. Four Axis Technologies About 4-axis timing MECHATRONICS The idea of 4-axis is one thing, execution is another. The chief Okuma advantage in four-axis is the power of the OSP CNC control to offer ease of use and complete flexibility of turret timing. Put the cutting tools where and when they are needed. Two tools simultaneously or sequentially, from upper or lower turret. Okuma continues to be the preeminent supplier of this highly productive processing technology. Programming Conventional two-axis programming language. OSP makes the conversions for the lower turret. Machining is synchronized by P-codes (P1--Pn ) as assigned by the programmer. It will be 131 (s) if the part is cut in conventional manner. This means that simultaneous 4-axis cut yields nearly 48%. ACCURACY AND REPEATABILITY Machine Position and Geometry The rigid machine structure coupled with a high response positioning system provides the following machine positioning accuracies and repeatability: Accuracy: X-axis: 0.00047 (0.012 mm) over any 4 (100 mm) of stroke. Z-axis: 0.00079 (0.020 mm) over any 12 (300 mm) of stroke. Repeatability: X-axis: +/-0.00012 (+/-0.003 mm). Z-axis: +/-0.00020 (+/-0.005 mm). These accuracy guarantees are based on the procedures below. Machine Position and Geometry Inspection Laser alignments, mechanical alignments and positioning accuracy checks are among the 200 quality tests performed on every machine. Lead screw compensations are measured during final inspection and maintained in the Okuma control to insure the stated accuracies. X and Z Axes Positioning Measurement: Procedure for determining positioning accuracy on X- and Z-axes is by laser measurement of a single, unidirectional, rapid traverse move of the cross-slide to a programmed position 3.93 (100 mm) along the X-axis. Afterward, the Z-axis is moved 11.81 (300 mm) from the starting position. The measured travel of cross-slide is compared with the commanded target position. The difference between the two numbers is the positioning accuracy for X and Z-axes. X- and Z-Axis Repeatability Measurement: The X- and Z-axes positioning test procedure (above) is repeated seven times. The difference between the largest result and the smallest result is the repeatability of X- and Z-axes. All moves are unidirectional, rapid traverse, single axis moves. Turret Indexing Accuracy The machine turret is a critical element in maintaining part piece integrity. The precision turret assembly is designed and manufactured by Okuma and achieves an indexing accuracy of +1.5 sec. (0.00008 [0.002 mm]/station). Thermo-Friendly Concept Okuma s Thermo-Friendly is a structurally designed, thermal deformation control system that provides astonishing machining accuracy. It frees the machinist from troublesome offsets and machine warm-ups, is superb for long runs, multi-tasking, front/back end work, plus applications. FLUID SYSTEMS Machine Lubrication Slideways and ball screws are lubricated by a centralized lubrication system. The system consists of a heavy-duty lubrication pump that feeds a series of precision piston distributors delivering the exact amount of oil required at each lubrication point. Machine Hydraulics Self-contained Hydraulic unit is enclosed by sheet metal of the machine minimizing pump db. The main unit and important sub-systems are interlocked with the CNC to provide safe operation. Controls for chuck, and tailstock are provided at the front of the machine for ease of operation. Chip & Coolant Control Proper chip removal is essential in maximum metal removal conditions. The 45-degree bed construction permits chips to fall directly onto the chip pan without accumulating on the slides. The chip pan is perforated to permit coolant to pass into the coolant tank. The separate coolant tank minimizes heat transfer involved with coolant and chips. The roll away feature offers quick and thorough tank maintenance. A tank level sight glass is provided for visual control of coolant supply. The separate roll away coolant tank system comes complete with perforated metal screens and filter unit. An independent 1.46 hp (1.1 kw) pump unit is standard. Easy Access GUARDING AND ENCLOSURE The operating area of the machine is totally enclosed and has an automatic front door with observation window. Construction permits easy entry for workpiece loading/unloading and easy access to the tooling. Pivoting Operation console provides efficient set-up and automatic operation Fluid Systems are entirely with-in enclosure and designed for dry floor operation. The electrical cabinet is sealed. A heat exchanger provides all necessary temperature control. The LU7000EX M includes guarding of the lower ways to prevent chip build up and improve maintainability. SAFETY Safety Features The LU7000EX M is equipped with a variety of safety devices to prevent accidents and injuries. However, it is strongly advised that operators use the machine carefully and not rely solely on these devices. Complete safety precautions are found in the operation manual.
